United Auto Workers' President Bob King said Wednesday that the "vast majority" of foreign carmakers in the U.S. have agreed to confidential meetings with the union about organizing nonrepresented workers at transplant factories.

The organizing drive, which King rolled out last year, is crucial to the UAW's self-preservation after years of declining membership. It also will loom large over contract talks under way between the union and the Detroit automakers.

Several foreign automakers, including Honda Motor Co., BMW AG and Toyota Motor Corp., said they have neither agreed to nor have they had discussions with the UAW. Volkswagen of America said Monday the union hasn't contacted management at its Chattanooga plant, which opened in May.
