General Motors Co. rushed Monday to reassure owners that its extended-range electric Chevrolet Volt is safe. The automaker offered free loaner vehicles to Volt owners in the wake of a federal safety investigation over fire risks. Mark Reuss, president of GM North America, said the Detroit automaker will allow any Volt owner concerned about safety to arrange for a free GM vehicle loan until the issue is resolved.
"A vehicle loan program of this nature is well beyond the norm for a preliminary investigation, and it underlines our commitment to the vehicle and its owners," he said. "We don't think there's an immediate fire risk."
