Oh-kay, folks. Time to break out the tinfoil hats.

Well, not exactly.

Today we received some fresh spy shots courtesy of our man in the field, Fred Khaz. While roaming SoCal he spotted an interesting BMW X3. At first glance everything appears to be seemingly normal.

That is until you realize two things:

1) It's wearing "DST," California distributor plates, and
2) It has a single exhaust pipe.

While that may not seem like a big deal to most folks, it's actually a pretty good indicator that BMW is testing out a new powerplant. To be more specific, I'd wager it has to be either the 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline motor found in the new 320i, OR, it has to be the new 2.0-liter four-cylinder DIESEL engine seen in the 2013 New York Auto Show 328d.

What would YOU rather see in the BMW X3?
