In recent weeks some noise has been made about the world's fastest production car. The Guinness Book of World Records was investigating some mishmosh with the Bugatti Veyron only to reverse its decision. And then the Grand Sport Vitesse went and claimed the world record for the fastest convertible.

But it may have something to worry about as SSC North America is working on one substantial beast. That would be the Tuatra. The company's founder is talking about this being the most versatile and capable hypercar on the planet AND it will shatter previous records.

It sounds like a bs until you realize the motor, which just completed testing, will be a 6.9-liter bi-turbo V8 producing 1,350 horsepower and 1280 lb.-ft. of torque on pump fuel. Add racing fuel to the mix and speculation states 1,700 ponies will be on tap.

Nutty, right?

No word on when one will hit the streets in production trim.

With super cars like the Hennessey Venom GT and the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport battling it out for the world speed record for production cars, the folks at SSC North America are preparing to enter that same fight as they think that they have a true contender on their hands, the Tuatara.

SSC has announced they have completed testing of the Tuatara’s newly-developed twin-turbo V8 engine. The 6.9 liter V8 cranks out 350 hp and 1280 lb-ft of torque when running on premium 91 octane fuel. However what’s more impressive is that when you put in racing gasoline the horsepower bumps up to a whopping 1700 horsepower.
