On an annual basis, Auto Express hosts a competition for the year's best cars via reader's votes. It's a pretty unconventional way to name the year's best cars, but hey, it is what it is.

What does make it interesting is that the editors also added their own picks from the vehicle range. So, if the readers picked an S-Class, for example, the editors would pint you in the right direction as to which is the best variant.

That said, let us get to the winners:

- Small class winner (by votes): Volkswagen Golf
- Small class winner: Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion

- Middle class winner (by votes): Audi A3 saloon
- Middle class winner: Audi A3 1.4 TFSI CoD Sport

- Luxury class winner (by votes): Mercedes-Benz S-Class
- Luxury class winner: Mercedes-Benz S-Class BlueTEC L SE Line

- SUV class winner (by votes): BMW X5
