For the past several months we've been keeping an eye on one of Mercedes-Benz's emerging projects. It's one of those cars that went misidentified for quite some time. So, the story is already good on this product.

Originally thought to be a "Baby SLS" the GT AMG didn't have that in the cards at all, apparently.

Now sources are reporting that the GT AMG will actually be the replacement for the SLS AMG "Gullwing." Though it seems that the SLS AMG had a short life, that's all Mercedes-Benz wrote for it.

Since information is coming in fast and furious, without any real clarification for that matter, we'll go along with the latest story lines of this being the all-new, high-end performance car for the three-pointed star. I mean, Mercedes already did the SLS AMG Black Series and the Final Edition goes on sale this summer. This would leave a gap for the GT to fill.

If you take a look at the collection of spy shots and piece together the comments from executives, it seems clear the brand is looking to take on the likes of the Jaguar F-Type, Porsche 911 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage head on. We reckon Mercedes may have its hands full once Chevrolet starts dropping the high-powered variants of the all-new Corvette.

Back to the pics. Note the different wheel/tire sizes AND the different exhausts. Something tells me Mercedes will play this smart by offering a standard car and then a higher spec AMG variant.
