The BMW M5 is an icon in the world of automobiles. It was the sport sedan that essentially created a tidal wave because who wouldn't want a practical four door that felt like a supercar?
There's just one problem. Apparently, the M5 is "suffering" as told by BMW's M GmbH president Friedrich Nitschke.
Speaking to Auto Motor und Sport, Nitschke said the current model is "suffering" and adding all-wheel drive on the next-generation M5 could be a "solution." While nothing is set in stone, the executive said the company would have to consider the effects that an all-wheel drive system would have in terms of weight and weight distribution.
Speaking of weight, Nitschke confirmed the next-generation M5 will be lighter than its predecessor. He declined to mention numbers but said he wants the weight savings to be "significantly higher" than the M4 coupe had over its predecessor. This suggests the next M5 will weigh at least 80 kg (176 lbs) less than the current model.
Because of this, it's looking more clear that the next-gen M5 will receive all-wheel drive as well as receive some significant weight reduction. Hey, we're all for that!
Though it would be a shame to see another M car go the way of AWD, the reality is that if BMW wants to remain competitive with the likes of Audi's RS7, the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and Porsche Panamera Turbo, it will have to find a way to put more of its power to the ground.
In addition, everyone and their mother is aware of the 5-Series portly proportions these days. I don't think anyone with a heart for speed and handling would disagree that the 5'er could lose a few pounds.
