Volkswagen is investigating whether cars using early versions of its EA 288 diesel engine may have contained software that could manipulate emissions test data.

Cars using the current version of its EA 288 engine do not have the cheat software, Volkswagen said today.

"Other generations of the EA 288 are currently being examined," VW said in a statement, without providing further details.
