Reports that came out saying that Volkswagen AG has produced more vehicles for the first three quarters of the year than Toyota Motor Corp. may not be all that accurate. These reports cited that the carmakers’ third-quarter financial reports showed Volkswagen had built 4.4 million units and that Toyota had produced 4.2 million.
The issue here is that the two companies differ in how they computed for the production total.
Volkswagen’s total included production by joint ventures in which it does not hold a majority stake while Toyota excludes those. If Toyota added affiliates, it would then have 4.9 million units, which give it a wide lead for the top spot.
