The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have widened the scope of an investigation started over more than 300 complaints that stemmed from airbags on some Ford Motor Co F-150 pickups deploying without warning.

Documents show that the NHTSA is now looking at model year 2004-06 trucks, covering an estimated 1.56 million vehicles. Notably, this is triple the number identified when the agency launched a preliminary review of 2005 pickups last fall. Safety specialists are undertaking an engineering analysis of the F-150 and this can precede a recall. However, the government has not indicated if a recall was warranted.
