To break the “all-too-cozy relationship” between former NHTSA officials and the auto industry, US Senator Barbara Boxer has proposed a bill that would prevent carmakers from hiring former safety regulators.
This bill seeks to resolve the problems stemming from Toyota Motor Corp.’s apparent influence on government recall decisions. Boxer’s bill will mean that NHTSA officials that held jobs requiring written or oral communications with the agency will be barred from joining these carmakers for three years after they have left the agency.
