Electric Lightning GT
100% Electric Lightning GT
Lightning Car Company will be previewing their Lightning GT at the London International Motorshow later this month. The GT is the first 100% electric British sports car bringing together the latest technologies for the future.
Inspired by British heritage designs, the GT boasts an elegant yet sporty design which incorporates the “green” edge. An incredible 700+ bhp equivalent electric motor launches the GT from 0-60mph in 4.0 seconds, making it one of the fastest cars around with zero emissions. Being an electric car, 100% torque is available at zero rpm which is a figure no petrol engine can beat.
The high grade NanoSafe™ battery used in the GT has a life expectancy of over 12 years with an energy retention rating of up to 85% after 15,000 charges. The battery uses no toxic or heavy metals keeping battery weight to a minimum. An interesting fact to note is the 10 minute recharge time that makes the overnight charging requirement a chore of the past.
The Lightning GT can now be reserved with a £15,000 deposit with an approximate retail value of £150,000. by PressPortal.com.au

Now 4 seconds is an impressive number for a car with an electric motor.

I haven't been able to find out what power source is needed for the 10 min charge.. other companies will offer different charge times depending on what voltage and amperage is going to the charger, ie. almost a day off a typical 15A120V outlet, but significantly less when large power cables are run to the charging station.
If the 10 min charge was off a typical (15A 220 - 240v) European outlet we would be looking at a twenty min charge here in North America (and Japan, Outstanding!!!!
If the charge was off a larger power source, ie. you had to run #2 tech cable (large cables) off your house panel to a 100A disconnect in the garage, then to a plug that would go into your car. That would be less impressive..and pretty costly, however possibly still worth it.
Ten min on a 15A 120V outlet is amazing, on a 15A 240v (European) outlet is still amazing... Ten min charge drawing anymore than 50A would be a great feat, but it would be costly to get the power from your panel out to the garage (I imagine that's where you charge it) with regards to wire cost, disconnects, breakers, a new panel if your still at 60A house feed, possibly a new panel even if you are at 100A and all of the safety equipment that would be needed for a the typical person to operate a +50A 240V plug. Typically a regular size house would require a 200A feed if it was electrically heated or there was a pool heater. Now you might add "Car Charging Station" to the list of houses that should warrant a upgrade from 100A to 200A.
And at the end of the day, we still pollute creating the electricity that our clean emission free cars are running on.

"And at the end of the day, we still pollute creating the electricity that our clean emission free cars are running on."
Yes, but most anything requiring electricity has that problem. However, as I've said in the past, by switching to electricity we can change the source that we get our energy from. Now a car can be powered by wind, solar, nuclear, wherever the area gets it's power from. We don't need oil to do it.

Even the worst coal plant pollutes less than the equivalent number of gas engines it would take to replace it. Just think about starting up 100,000 cold engines in driveways each morning to a get the visual on this.

Nothing is mentioned about range on one charge, thus a 10min charge doesn't necessarily mean much. If it has any kind of decent range, then any electrical engineer would tell you that a 10-minute charge is rather unlikely unless you happen to have massive cables attached to a power substation on your property. 6-8 hours is what you would be looking at from plugging in to your homes electrical system.

found something... it does say the car can be charged with a extension cord to your regular household power outlet, in europe it's single phase 15A 220v-240v. But it'll take overnight.
"Q. How will the Lightning be charged away from home?
A. Standard single phase home type power source can be used to charge overnight and is available just about anywhere by using the onboard charger. For a fast charge a 3 phase power supply is required and with the interest in electric powered vehicles increasing significantly, more high power charging stations will be installed. Most garage forecourt and industrial areas already have this level of high power source available and therefore can be fitted with a universal charging station."
So it sounds like the typical charge will be overnight.. not ten minutes. And commercial buildings that have a 3-phase system will be able to provide the 10 min charge. Therefore residential houses, having 2-phases, will not be able to charge the car in ten minutes, it will take significantly more..
But what I keep overlooking here is.. 700bhp.. pretty damn good no matter which way you slice it.

Can't wait for the driver comparo test between the Lightning GT and the Tesla Roadster.
Say does anyone know how much the Lightning weighs? 0-60 in 4 sec. seems a little slow for a 700+ HP car, don't you think? As far as I can tell, it's not mentioned on their website.
(Too bad the Eliica will never see production.)

Well there have been studys that say if we all switched to electric cars we would have worst air. Why because of the coal we burn to make the power. So I think they need to up the standards for these types of plants to make them cleaner. Also as far as nuclear power. My question to you is do you want clean air or clean land. Because what nuclear power does produce is radioactive waste!!!!! We do we store this stuff?? Not in my state. And what happens when the plant has a leak???? I think there are much better ways of producing power than with nuclear killing stations.
