12.7 million viewers tuned into watch the new KITT
While many of you didn’t like the new Knight Rider movie much, according to Nielsen Media Research the 2-hour special event averaged 12.7 million viewers. The agency said that despite the NBA All-Star game, viewers from the 18-49-year-old demographic tuned into watch the new KITT.
Becoming the most popular show to run its time slot, Knight Rider gained more viewers during the second hour of the show, where David Hasselhoff made a cameo towards the end of the movie...

@ xdrive,
Will Arnett is under contract with GMC so it was a conflict of interests.
Having Val Kilmer step in meant that either he's close friends with someone involved in the pilot...or he's desperate for work!

It's called a 2 hour made for TV movie for a reason. If they had a big budget then it would have been different. Had to keep some suspense in it.
All these people comparing the voice of KITT, the car itself and waaah waaah waaah. What they don't realize is a few things (more pertaining to the car). Oh, they sold out with the Mustang, puh-leez.
The whole concept around the movie is not to redo Knight Rider, but to continue upon the old series. 25 years later it is now, and KITT is a whole new car, different technology and the like. I loved the Mustang GT500 KR, what a rocket! And the voice did not bother me one bit. I was just excited to see a show that drew my attention more than any other have in recent times since the Shield and Rescue Me came out.
I didn't even know the All Star game was on, not that I watch or even care about the NBA (worst sport ever). But that aside, the plot was decent, and the character development was good enough to create the series. This was not a FULL movie, but more like a Pilot Prologue to what the series could be. So they had to cram a lot of stuff into two hours and still give you plenty of action with the car. So all in all I was pleased and will be hoping a series will come out of this. 12.7 million viewers is nothing to scoff at.
Back to the KITT car not being a GM. Well the first one was a Trans Am. When was the last time Pontiac made that car (most recent). 8-10 years ago, yeah...that would make for a good show. NOT! And if they used the Camaro, Chevy would just once again be touting a vehicle that we cannot see for another year. Especially since we already saw it in Transformers.
Let's not forget GM has a lot of rights to vehicle usage in the Transformers series that still has 2 more movies being made. So who cares if it's a Ford. The reasoning for all the commercial time was because the car was a Ford, cars in the movie were Fords, and since they put up a good chunk of money for this film to be made, they get the airtime. Although Chevy did sneak an ad in there.
Guess my overall opinion was that I liked it, and really hope they do a series on it, cause I would love to see full hour episodes of this each week. I'm tired of House, Nip/Tuck, Gilmore girly crap on TV, give me a muscle car with a guy who fights and a big black airplane to drop them wherever on the map to take on the bad guys. WooHOO!

I actually agree with most of what you said. It seems to me that most people over the age of 30 that were huge fans of the original show are the most disappointed. I'm in that group and I thought the 2 hour pilot episode(which really what it was) was OK, not that it couldn't have been a bit better. It was kinda cheesy too but if you go back and watch the old show that was really cheesy. I think the fact that we're grown now some of us forgot that. Knight Rider has always been a kids oriented show. Yeah they're shooting off guns in the show but they're almost always shooting at the cool bullet proof indestructable car.
The fact that KITT is a Mustang is OK too, considering that GM wanted nothing to do with the show this time around. But anyway I'm willing to give this show a chance and not completely judge it based off one showing. It needs time to grow and I'm hoping most of the fan criticism will make it better.

I liked the new Transformers movie as well. Some more variety in the vehicles would have been cool, but I don't feel like having only GM cars detracted somehow from the movie. Personally I'd like to see the new CTS-V in the next movie.

Umm...no it shouldn't have. There is nothing cool about a Toyota Camry, and from a marketing standpoint there would be no reason for Toyota to put the Camry in something like this.

I am neither a German or domestic "fanboy". If you must know I drive an Infinti I30. But just because I like my Infiniti doesn't mean I think nothing else compares to it or is cool.
The Mustang is a cool car, and people want to see cool cars in movies and on TV. Nobody wants to see a grocery-getting Camry in an action movie.

In the new Transformers movie Optimus Prime was a semi truck because Optimus Prime has always been a semi truck. Likewise for the ambulance. Those vehicles were used to stay true to the series. People wanted to see them because they were the characters from the original cartoon series.

I liked it because I went into it accepting what it was from the outset. It, like the original version was meant to appeal to the 12-year olds of the world - a human cast in a comic book setting. I didn't try to over intellectualize it.
I think Ford made a pretty good investment in the project as it really ended up being a 2 hour commercial for Ford, with commercial breaks for Ford inbetween. Dodge wanted it, but didn't win the bid.

Hey JoshLexus4Ever,
Think positive, kid. Just because you're 14 doesn't mean that you can't get a date with Megan Fox...even if you are trying to woo her with an IS250!

I was one of the BILLIONS that didn't watch it. The promotional spots gave it away to be nothing more than a Ford commercial as many of you have pointed out.

This will be short lived. I tuned in and tuned out after the first hour. A lotta hype for a mega Ford commercial. After 20 years...was this the best they could come up with? I won't be tuning in next week and I doubt many who tuned in for the first one will either.

I still don’t understand how they determine the viewership? I have a TV antenna, how do they determine that I watched the TV show (which I didn't)? Does my TV secretly reporting me to BIG Brother?

I'll be the first to say the supercharger whine was my favorite part. No cheezy fake jet noises, just honest to goodness American supercharged muscle sounds.

The movie was very bad. The use of Ford cars was way over the top and it was bad acting. These are the facts. This is my opinion.

Product placement in movies is about advancing current or coming products. The Supra hasn't been produced for several years, so if you want to see Supras in movies I'd recommend "The Fast and The Furious". Camrys, as mentioned before, are not cool and already sell well enough that it would be a waste of money to pay to put them in a movie. The LS600h is also not a sports car and its target market demographic doesn't watch action movies.
