Me too! :)
I knew about the base on the S8 for about 4 months but the S6 was hard to find.

I'm still surprised the S8 is that much cheaper than the A8 W12. I was expecting it to be about $100k.

Will: Yes by about $4-5k with similar equipment, but the S6 will still have a few more options.
efoxS4: yes, I meant S8 ;)

AUDIMAN4: The W12 has more features like DVD players and 4 seat configuration.
It more on the luxury/ Limo side and V12 are always the most expensive cars usually.

-------------------------------------------------

Perhaps the A4 W12 is more luxurious so the ammenities are different. High quality wood I assume would cost more as well as the mine finishings are more luxury oriented than race oriented.

But I agree with you, it should be relatively close to the A8 W12.

The S8 is on the shorter platform. The S8 price is really good.

Yeah that S8 has a very attractive base price indeed. I'd rather buy a fully loaded S8 over the W12 anyday.

I think we should mention performance now. The S8 does 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and the quarter mile in 13.1 seconds @ 109 or 110. The S550 is 1 seconds slower in 0-60 and 1.1 seconds in the quarter mile. (The S550 costs a comparable amount with options) The handling on the S8 was very good as well, over .9 G on the skidpad. The BMW 750i does 0-60 in 5.4 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 13.8, it also has less grip (it is cheaper tough) The S8 looks and performs much sportier than the competition. The S6 should post almost identical performance numbers.

Chewy's right...for once I can't argue. The S8 does appear to be the best buy for a top of the line luxury sedan. Not to mention a top of the line performer.

If only BMW made an M7...

MunichRob, the S8 is far and away the best performing car in the luxury-sedan arena in the $95-100K range.

The S550 goes 0-60 in 5.7 vs. the S8's 4.7. The Audi does the 1/4 mile in a shade over 13 seconds meanwhile the Benz can't even clear 14 seconds.

The 750Li only manages a 0-60 in 5.4 seconds, still .7 seconds slower than the S8's time.

What is clearly the world's best audio system currently available from a manufacturer in the S8's 1,100 watt system from Bang & Olufsen only costs $6,000 versus the previously reported $8K.

The S8 is a true price and performance bargain. There will be many happy customers with this new posh ride.

Yeah I know & agree GermanNut. Keep in mind tho the S8 doesn't directly compete with the $20,000 cheaper 750Li.

Also I'm pretty sure the Bang & Olufsen is putting out a 1000 watts, & has already been an available option on all A8 models.

The S6 should do well against the competition as well, however it does have some more challangers than the S8 does in its class.

the S8 is right on the money

The W12 is mostly used as a Limo even though the W12 outsells the MB and BMW 12s compined worldwide the market for that car is very small.

The S8 will be a higher volume car and much more sporty. Hell the car has cermac stopers

i hope the S6 has a ok money factor. I am trying to get my payment in the #1100 range not the 1,400 range

my car at the port has it all and is $80,060 :)

The younger buyers who are into VW's and Audi's will pick the R's. The more mature who are about luxury and comfort will lean towards Mercedes and BMW. It is true that the people who buy these cars worry more about comfort than performance.

MDalle if you were a true enthusiast you would know that the S65 costs around $180K. Nobody in their right mind goes around comparing $95K cars to $180K cars.

We all know the 65's are a waste, just do yourself a favor and get a Ferrari if you are looking in that price range. S65's don't sell well at all.

Yeah, the S6 is slower than the M5 on purpose. Audi is leaving room for the RS6 which sure as hell won't be slower than the M5 with a bi-turbo V10 pushing out over 530 horsepower.

Lastly, the 760i. Who wants to pay that much for that car which starts at $111,000? You get the same thing, but MUCH quicker with the S8 for about $15K less.

Remember both the 760i and S8 are the short-wheelbase models. In extras the Audi blows the 760 away. Talk about extras with the B&O 1,000 watt sound-system for $6K. The carbon fibre trim, along with the premium package.

Face it, the Audi S8 is the best priced car in the luxury-sedan class and also offers the best performance (by a good margin). It also comes with goodies that are not available on the 7-series or S-class.

Agent63 and Mdalle -these are diffrent cars - the S6 is much nicer then the 550 / look to the 4.2 A6 for that. The M5 fits between the S6 and RS6.

I am starting to see Audi not careing what BMW does and more and more it looks like BMw is reacting to what Audi does.

I guess with BMW's slowing sales it is understandable.

Also the A8 W12 ousells the BMW and MB combined in the world. The S8 is a sporty car and the W12 , 760 and S65 are lux cars.

Good price on the S8. That's about 10 grand less than a dealer guesstimated. So do you think the R8 will be priced below/above this?

I think that the E63 is the highest performance car in the 95k-100k segment. With the active air suspension you can achieve both a performance ride and a touring ride and still have blistering straightline performance that the impressive S8 can't touch. I know, performance isn't only straightline, but if you ever have sat in the seat of a car that can go from 0-60 in 4.1 sec. compared to 4.7 sec., its a dramatic and emotion sturring difference.

The problem with the E63 is its power. It has too much of it.
A little rain and its HP is worthless. Phenomenal car no doubt, but it loves straight lines not curves.
The S8 with Quattro is a 365 day car and you get even more luxury.

Alpina B7 is not coming to the United States, logical. I have already told you this. BMW has no plans for an M7 because the 7-series is already sport oriented and the M7 would not meet "M" guidelines such as high-revving naturally aspirated engine and handling requirements etc....

The S8 is king in the sport-luxury sedan arena.

Mercedes S55 is a sloppy barge and is in fact slower than the S8 in the 1/4 mile, not to mention much less refined in terms of interior and nowhere near as striking in appearance.

Alex...
With all due respect, I have never heard an enthusiast, like yourself, refer to a car as having to much horsepower. Although your point is well taken, in any inclement weather, I would much rather be in the quattro than in the Benz. As far as performance, I take the E63, you can have your S8 and we can have at it.

Golfer: Absolutely true.
Don't get me wrong, I love the E63 and it is a pure monster, but there is just something about the S8 that makes it more "practical" I would say.
The S8 is also longer and bigger than the E class.
it's the luxury of that car along with excellent performance that to me makes it a winner.
Not even just talking about snow, but in heavy rain the S8 would be able to use all of its power while the E63 would have to stay pretty tame! :)

i see more r-r phantoms than i see alpinas, logical. they're not listed as cars on sale in britain (even westfields are), they are barely production cars. i doubt that many people know what alpina is.
great cars, no doubt, but not enough exposure or production. some advertising could help, but then that would dilute the brand and blah blah blah.

what is it, 200 b7s for america?
once ina lifetime sight, thats for sure.
