2007 BMW 328i/335i sedans
I went to http://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/3 and noticed that they finally have the webpage and pricing for the new 3 series sedans. The 328i sedan starts at $32,400 and the 335i starts at $38,700. I wonder if they have any at my local BMW dealership. Anyone know how much the lease will cost for the 328i? I saw the 325i being leased for as low as $329 for 36 months with a 3000 down payment.

It might even be possible that the 335i sedan is faster than the 335i coupe. This would be due to better weight distribution (almost a perfect 50/50).

The coupe has been tested at 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. bmwusa.com officially states 0-60 in 5.3 for the 335i coupe with a manual.

The sedan could theoretically also do 0-60 iin 4.9 seconds. bmwusa.com officially states the 0-60 as 5.4 for the 335i sedan with manual.

Can you say best in-class acceleration, best in class handling and overall driving dynamics. BMW sure can.

The 3-series. A benchmark bringing down its wrath on the competition once again.

Most dealers should now have demos to drive (we have had both our 328 and 335 for about 2 weeks). I do orders are being taken, but count on everything that is coming in to be presold for at least a while. BMW won't be ramping up too much production on these until probably closer to end of october.

Wait, we have the coupes.....have not seen any sedans yet. Sorry about that, misread.

We will probably get our demos within the next month.

Lexus and Infiniti had little to do with the decision to make the 335i. When will you trolls finally get that fact into your head???

you think anyone will do a 2000 s4 vs. 335i comparo? I think that'd be cool, actually, i think a chipped 2000 s4 vs. a 335i would be best.

Looks like that answered my question. They're keeping the 330i engine, and it appears they're dropping he 325's. BMWusa.com only lists the 325Ci, with the 328i/xi listed as a lower model.

Competition makes it necessary for companies to improve their products, otherwise this engine is coming out pretty quickly. Lexus and Infiniti definitely had a hand, no matter how much you want to deny it.

Now I have to go pretty quickly to see this thing and drive it :).

Now BMW will win based on raw performance as well and not just the "magic feel."

Let us see what Lexus does to counter - if anything. Turbo Lexus anyone?

so what if competition made bmw up the ante. none of those companies would exist as we know it if bmw and mercedes hadn't pioneered the marketplace. but that's irrelevent too. i've heard people argue the rs4 made bmw create a v-8 for the m3, when the amg c-class had a v-8 almost a decade ago.

why would anyone feel the need to argue about who manipulated bmw's engineering one way or another. all of these companies are looking at other companie's ideas. if everyone went completely 100% on their own ideas, cars would be garbage.

human technological development is based on being able to emulate the good ideas some have had, and learn from the mistakes others have made.

the thing is, i hardly hear the bmw faithful talking about how they made infiniti or lexus or cadillac do this or that to remain competitive. if you need that types of pat on the back to rationalize your ride, then go back to high school, and everyone will wish they were you.

1995e34-

"none of those companies would exist as we know it if bmw and mercedes hadn't pioneered the marketplace."

Not true at all. Mercedes was the first company (1886 Daimler-Benz), but BMW was pretty far behind (1913). Horch, the precursor to Audi, debuted in 1899. Even Audi came out before BMW made an automobile engine, in 1910.

This is the best 3 series ever produced up to date. BMW imitators are now just scrambling to play catch up. Who can be more BMW than a BMW.

s4cabriofox, i am quite familiar with the history of automobiles, particularly german automobiles. i guess there are enough rookies prancing around this sight, you felt the need to clarify things. i understand.

what i was refering to was the sport sedan segment in particular. i know there were sports models available from these fine makers for several decades now, but i think that in terms of modern auto history (i.e. post ww2), it has been formed by mercedes and bmw.

not to take anything from the contributions audi makes, but i don't know of many models prior to early 90's that i would put in a museum if i were in charge of one. perhaps i'm just uninformed about audi; i wouldn't rule it out.

but my reference was to the sport sedan in general. i guess i didn't make that clear. when refering to the lexus, infiniti, bmw, cadillac, audi, alfa, benz, lincoln, acura group of cars, the only ones that i think actually created the sport sedan segment would be bmw and benz.

...and therein lies the fault of most auto journalists. Nothing will ever be a BMW, so why do they keep comparing everything to it. The C class doesn't want to be a BMW. Lexus doesn't want to be BMW (hence 2 models for 2 types of buyers). The same can be said that BMW can never achieve what MB and Lexus have.

As for what Lexus will do. I doubt they'll go turbo, o rthey could dust off the old Supra engine. If anything, they'll just fine tune their engine and find further weight savings.

Funny how acceleration suddenly matters again to the enthusiasts.

i don't think journalists said acceleration didn't matter. they said the bmw had similar acceleration to the best in class, and what set it apart was the overall driving dynamics of the car.

is that really absurd?

the testers seem to place quite a high value on driving dynamics. i don't think there's a conspiracy going on. while ANY manufacturer can put more power to the wheels to increase acceleration, some of the brightest engineers from all over the world have not been able to replicate the drive of a bmw.

perhaps some never really attempted to capture the driving feel. i know many makers favors a more novice-friendly driving experience. they allow for a bit more understeer, a little less hair-trigger steering response, and just a step down in handling.

but if you think it's just a myth about the communication a bmw facilitates between driver and machine, i highly recommend getting behind the wheel of a bmw for at least a few hours on some curved roads.

and if it is a myth, maybe the driving time will help you find the source of the myth. and you can solve one of the auto industries biggest mysteries. it would be like a hardee boys story.

back to earth, experienced drivers know well what bmw brings to the table. if their not your preference, fine. but they aren't going to be loosing many road tests anytime soon.

they know the average buyer will never fully utilize the handling. but that's the appeal of a bmw. their moto is ultimate driving machine. and if average drivers were to use their acceleration to it's full potential on a regular basis, no car would last beyond $50k miles.

and i think reviewer's are pretty comprehensive in their analysis of the whole car. they don't ignore bmw's shortcomings. they really gave bmw quite a rough time upon introduction of the i-drive system.

and now the 335i will eliminate the performance characteristic that tarnished the 330i.

There's a horsepower war goin on right now and the auto industry is moving very fast. New car's seem to be coming out every few months now...hence the reason why BMW had to up the ante.

They were doing great with the hp offered in their other models but one...the 3-series. That's not a problem anymore though, as we all know.

With the introduction of the 335i, you Lexus guys don't have much to boast about with the IS350.

Then why did they build it if the 330i was already "the best in its class?"

My bet is that they went to work on it as soon as they discovered that the IS350 has a 306hp V6.
=========================================

Because there are always people who want more power. That's why.

Do you think BMW could have designed, created and engineered the new 335i a few months after the IS350 came out?

NO.

The development of such an engine takes YEARS.Proof enough that BMW "didn't react" as you Lexus folks like to claim.

Will,

How many YEARS does it take to add TWO turbos?
===============================================

How old are you!?

Adding the turbos doesn't close the issue. You need to test the engine over many miles. The turbos have to be tested and checked for problems and how those problems can be eliminated. Simply slapping on some turbos is not how BMW works. Like every manufacturer, they TEST it first.

i'm sure bmw has experimented with turbos on every engine theyve ever made. the question would be who will produce the turbos, and how to avoid problems with the turbos in a production model. i don't know if you can get a contract to have 40k turbos made per year overnight.

they are very deliberate with the development of these cars. i would hope this decision to go turbo wasn't made in the past few months.

1995e34-

"but i don't know of many models prior to early 90's that i would put in a museum if i were in charge of one."

Audi quattro coupe Sport. That car pioneered AWD technology in passenger cars, and dominated every rally it ever entered. If it weren't for the quattro, BMW wouldn't have xDrive, Mercedes wouldn't have 4Matic, and most importantly, Audi wouldn't have quattro!

YZFracer-

My brother actually has a 2001 B5 S4 Stage II with about 330hp. That car is a monster!

Will-

I drive these cars for a living, and the 335i does out-accel the IS350.
The IS350 is a good car, but it just can't keep up with a 335i (or a 330i) through a corner there is to much understeer built into it. The "magic feel" is not a myth, drive any german built car, they all have a sense for the road. The ultimate example is a Porsche 997.

By the way I drive between 6k to 8k miles a month in everything from lexus to Porsche, and my daily is a 06 E90 330ia.
