2007 Frankfurt Auto Show: Can The BMW 1-Series Coupe Recreate The Magic?
001 was on hand for the official debut of the US bound 1-Series for BMW on opening day at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. With entry level pricing below the magical $30,000 barrier the new BMW 1-Series coupe has the potential to bring in a whole new demographic into the BMW fold.

But can it revive the mystic in the way that 2002ti did in the 1970's? To many the 2002ti was credited to putting BMW on the map in the US marketplace. Low cost, and excellent performance combuned into a smart compact sedan, introduced young affluent buys of the time to whole new level of performance value.

If you ask us, they may have recreated the magic again for a whole new generation.

Enjoy the best photo coverage of the 2007 Frankfurt auto show.

I dont know, mid-30's for a 135i, seems like a lot to me. There are a lot of cars available when your shopping in that range. Are people really going to pay that much for a little BMW? I know I wouldnt.

Consider how much an Impreza WRX STi costs.

For a little BMW with 300 hp! I'd pay it.

Considering it has RWD, 50-50 weight distribution and BMW build quality. It's a deal!

As TR would say, the 135 is bully! It will be a hit and is in a class by itself.

Funny how BMW had to come up with a new line of cars because its existing 3 series pricing keeps increasing. The 135 will most likely be dummied down (by gearing) so that it will not take away 335 or even M3 sales. If not the 135 will be the shit!

Isn't that fairly typical, as you move upscale you create another entry level vehicle to draw in new blood?

That car is a similar to the 1968 2002 , and the first 3 series of the 70's.

Hey, it isn't too bad. I actually like the way it looks. But yes, they COULD have made it look more like the 2002 and I agree with you regarding that sentiment. They should have, but didn't.

001-009 I am very curious to find out if you had a chance to really get a good look inside and out of the CS Concept.

Your opinion, as well as any inside scoop from Chris Bangel on the potential future for this auto would be a great addition to all the fine reporting back from Frankfurt. Thanks.

I'm sorry, but does anybody else find this car incredibly UGLY? It's a dog! Obviously I love BMWs, but I struggle to find a new one that I would buy. I think the current 3 series SEDAN might be the best looking car in the lineup, with the 3 series coupe a close second. The Z4 ain't bad, and I actually really like the 7 series, although I prefer the original to current vanilla-ized version. The X5 looks good for an SUV. The last 5 series (E39) may have been the best looking sedan ever, with the current E class a close second. E46 coupe was gorgeous (sedan was lame). Don't blame Bangle, many others are also responsible.

Hey, you know what? Audi has replaced the void that is created by the current BMW line-up, that SHOULD have been the current BMW line-up. In other words, Audis today look like what BMW should have looked like - in essence and principle of design of course, not literally.
