Great news for GM that the new Malibu and CTS made the list. I think they may have finally begun to turn that company around.

I have not driven them yet, but I'm very curious to know how the CTS handles and drives with the performance packages.

good list.

CTS and malibu are newcomers that truly belong on that list. good to see some american cars that can make the cut.

and of course the 3-series and the accord belong there as they're clearly the best cars in their respective categories...

BMW is the most overrated car in the world. It’s also overpriced. When you read some tests, you think that it’s a fanatastic car. BUT NO. When you test drive it, your’re most of times deceived. And you ask yourself why some people praise this car all time ? Readers be careful when your read a BMW test and compaision. You can be sure that it wins always. But test in your self and you see the reality is something else. For the moment BMW is à la mode.

copy+paste...did you just lear how to use that?

bmwpos...all right! We know you are a asian fanatic and hate BMW.

We've got it alright?

Stop hating with your inane a la mode coments that you constantly repeat...

Now back to the adults in the room...Recently drove the Malibu and CTS and was very impressed with both of them...Cheers to GM- Now nail the Volt Concept and you will be well on your way back to world class status

Not drivers cars, car and driver takes a very unbiased look at dynamics (which is why we see so many affordable cars, price IS a component!)

because if there are, there are many ways to improve the list. For one, I think that they didn't leave anything to the imagination.

The C-Class and A5 are the only cars from M-B and Audi that are new for 2008.

Is it not obvious that the 3 Series would beat the A5 (it IS Car & Driver, after all, and the 335i rocks), and that the CTS would beat the C?

I think it is a testament to the open-mindedness of the American consumer. Look at a list of 10 best vehicles sold in Germany, they would nearly all be German, even though several of these non-German vehicles are sold there along with many great non-German vehicles that are not sold in the US. The American cars on this list deserve to be here, as well, all of the foreign vehicles deserve to be here too.

There might be a price cap (which doesn't make sense--they should be able to choose between all cars)... but it's also because the S-Class isn't new for 2008. The A5/S5 is, but this is C/D, and the 3 Series will always win.

What is the Honda Fit and Mazda MX-5 doing there? What's so special about these cars? The Honda Fit is a boring MPV without much competition and the new Mazda MX-5 is an inexpensive, sporty roadster that was released about a year ago.

As usual, C&D loves the BMW 3er and Honda Accord. Why no Infiniti G?

Its called best in class, dude. The MX-5 is an amazing little car, which re-invented the small roadster (w/o crappy quality or a high price).

I do agree with you on the G, but they had to make room for the CTS and the Malibu, and they werent going to pick the G over the 3. Makes sense.

Best in class? Then what's the BMW 3er or Cadillac CTS doing on the list? Shouldn't they pick only one car from "that class" then?

Mazdaspeed3 for the second year in a row! They really should not make it limited edition...it would help consumers (resale value would be higher) but it would be a bad financial move because its such a hot seller for Mazda.

I'm a little surprised to see the Mazda MX-5 Miata on that list for 2 years in a row now. But after I did a little checking into the Mazda Miata to see what the fuzz is about, I found out that the car has been in the US market for 15 years now.

I thought a Miata is a really small car. But from the picture in the article, it looks nearly identical in size as my beloved Porsche Boxster/Cayman (my beloved Cayman S really).

The Miata can't have the same steering feel as the Porsches, because the Miata's engine is in the front and over the front axle. But the Miata only weights 2500 lbs. Can anyone share their experience with the Miata, such as ride comfort, crusing noise, etc.?

I have owned and driven many a true sports car and for the dollar value and drive the MX-5 is still one of the ten best cars in the world at any price to have fun and nice looks in.

A good friend recently purchased a 2008 Grand Torung Miata. He let me drive it around a while and I was impressed. It handles great, good brakes, etc. This is not surprising though, as this vehicle is often used for auto xing, as well as other sorts of racing.

At 6' 4", I am a bit to large for the car, but I feel that may have made the driving experience even better. The vehicle fit like a glove and felt nearly go-kart like. I appreciated the open top highway driving experience the best though. The Stereo is pretty good witht he top down at 70mph. Nearly zero wind in the cabin at this speed. Heck, you could carry on a conversation without too much of a problem. I could enjoy a several hour highway cruise with the top down in this vehicle. Most convertibles drive me batty at highway speed, after a short while.

Agreed, but think about it. The new CTS is so important and was well executed by Caddy. The 3 is always going to be on there. I dont think they could have 3 cars from the same class on this list...they had to cut one of them out.

The Miata is a contemporary classic, similar to the 911, Jeep CJ/Wrangler, Corvette, etc. The 3 series, GTI and Accord are pretty much there too, but not quite as iconic. They ALL have been great cars past, present and presumably well into the future.

These list are all about how a person feels in each segment. Example: many can make a case for another sports car other then a Vette, but when you slide in
that drivers sit low slung start it up and cruise around it is as close as you get on the Indy circuit.
BMW just has a magic with the badge and the car for youthful young upscale people that is you feel like you are climbing up in the world.
Honda Fit it says look at me, i probally can afford a lot more car but this says i'm doing my part and with a nice reliable machine go ahead pass me up i still win the race overall i got time on my side.
Cadillac for the sure fact they made the customer feel we stuck with CTS to make it better and now the public drives it around not ashamed to be at a light with a Benz or BMW i'm on equal footing now look at me i bought American also.
Basically i like the list i think that is what it is all about not just 0-60 or a name but overall feel,MFG getting it right and nothing to be hanging your head about you can feel proud to own these cars?

The most American I have felt in a long time was when I recently had a Vette for a few weeks at my disposal. Every day after work, I'd take off the targa top, hop in and take a nice drive into the country. I love the hearty V8 sound, coupled with the 6 speed manual. It was a great feeling. Every time you would meet someone else driving a Vette, they would give you a big smile and a wave. You know they felt it too. Several of the vehicles on this list would give you some sort of great feeling. Probably why they are one of the 10 best.

The Avalon is hideous. It is huge, but its designers made no effort at trying to hide it. Too many lines. Too many strange light clusters. From the moment it was introduced, the Avalon's design was confused. They can't find anything "just right."

Great list this year. I agree with almost all of them.

"Almost," you ask? Not sure about the Corvette. It just has never done much for me. The older (REALLY old--'50s and '60s) ones have, but currently it seems like a mid-life crisis on wheels to me. How can it share the list with the Boxster? How can the Malibu and the Accord both be here? Are there any classes, or do they just pick these cars at random?

How many years is this for the 3 Series? And for the Accord?
