chickie - you are late to this arguement

I have been hearing about the NEW M3 "eating the RS4 for breakfast" Now the EOP has been anounced and the M3 is not even out.

If you don't like the RS4 then you have never driven one. WOW! I am sure the M3 will be nice but the RS4 has been king for 1 1/2 years now and will do fine when the cheeper M3 is out.

So what, the ML63 is around $80-$85K. The RS4 is better value than the ML63.

It's been out for more than that. Yes 1.5 years in US, but 2 years since first RS4 was out of the factory lines. So BMW is really late with the M3 - considering the old one can not compete with the RS4 in any way.

The 335i hardtop convertible costs $10,000 more than the regular sedan. If the new M3 coupe is going to cost around $68,000 you add on about $8,000 because its a coupe to convertible conversion, not sedan to convertible. So the new M3 Cabriolet will cost around $76,000 which is a lot less than 85K for the Audi but of course these are VERY rough estimates based on rumors of US pricing for the new M3 and not taking into account that the M3 Cabriolet may use some crazy carbonfiber hardtop or something like that.

yes and i heard that the M3 will poop gold

The car will not have a carbonfiber hood. If it did it would be "carbonfiber looking" like the wood in a bmw is "wood looking"

Not sure what they do outside of the U.S. but here BMW doesn't use fake wood in any of it's vehicles. If it has wood trim, it's wood. And the M3 DOES have a carbon fiber weave roof, same as the M6. Saves 11 lbs off the car right off the top, lowering the center of gravity.

yeah this makes sense. And for $80k + range I could get a SL550, 650 conv, Jaguar XKR. Way to go Audi. Way to overprice a car. Come on $80k + for an Audi A4 conv. What is Audi smoking? It must be some good sh%%. Where can I get some of that?

And the RS4 will eat all these cars you just listed for lunch.....it has more power than any of these, and the best part is that the RS4 can actually put the power to the ground.
And it fits 4 people.
Enough said....your argument is just stupid.
I'm sure you have not been in a RS4 to truly appreciate what it is and what it can do.
You and Amazingbeemer should talk to each other.

Actually AlexTx ... I have . My brother is one of the top mechanics for Audi in the State of Illinois. My arguement is not stupid. If you look at it for what it is. The current audi RS4 cab is based on an old platform with a new version due out in a couple of years. Why would Audi wait for such a long time and right at the end to come out with a RS4 cab? Doesnt make any sense, especially when there is talk of a cab coming out in the A5. Also, the RS4 will not eat those cars for lunch. 0 to 60 in the RS4 cab will probably be around 5 seconds. All 3 of those cars are in the mid 5's 0 to 60. Dont sit here and tell me that you would rather have a RS4 cab vs a MBSL550 or a BMW 650 or the Jaguar XK8. If you are you are lying. I am surprised that Audi would bring this car this late into the life of this body.

stupid is as stupid does.

AlexTX ... Performace wise it is also not going to be really any faster than the 335 conv. The BMW 335 conv seats 4 people, is larger, has a retractable hardtop, includes the maintenance, and costs $30k less. Are you trying to tell me that the RS4 is $30k better than the 335 conv? that is stupid ...

Audi will sell every single one they make, whether the price is 60 or 80 thousand. They're only importing 300 the US.
The new M3 convertible will cost something very similar, I promise you. BMW have price matched it to the RS4 in England completely.
And 0-60 is in under 4.7 seconds.

BMW4ever - again - it's about marketing. The old body style is near the end of it's life - so they want to squeeze out all of the capacity in the factory to make room for newer models. They are bringing it because their dealers have been asking. Dealers only request what the customers request.

The american market is the biggest and the most important auto market, therefore you guys are kind of lucky. The prices are lower than many other parts of the world. I live in Canada now, and when I compare the prices of German cars, US prices are sometimes lower by more than US$5000. In my country, the UAE, the price of a RS4 sedan is around 95 thousands (price quoted in Jan 07). Strangely enough, a nicely equipped 911 Carrera S will cost less. The BMW M5 will cost at least 110,000, the 335i Coupe costs 61,000 US$.
I am eagerly waiting for the M3, which is going to arrive by Jan 2008 in my local dealers, however, I believe, I will be disappointed with the price :(

It's the same for Europe, in England a 335i coupe starts at 70000 US dollars, and an RS4 at 100000 dollars, as does the new M3 coupe. RS4 cab is 120000 dollars.
80000 is a complete bargain, why do they complain?

Yes - it amazing how relatively less expensive luxury cars are in the U.S. compared to other places. I once made that point and got de-boosted. Anyhow, there are even some smaller markets where you can't even lease a lux vehicle - you have to buy it. Is it like that in the UK? I have relatives in Birmingham but it seems most use public transport.

Completely agree. For instance my CL will cost about 217k US dollar with the current currencies. That's INSANE!

That is Audi's strategy going forward. They've stated it before. They want people to think of them as more premium - so the raise the prices. It's like fashion. If you make a pair of jeans and charge $50 it might only be mildly popular. If you price it at $250 you will have less sales - but everybody will want one. It's marketing. Looking at the price of the RS's they tend to be in the range of the AMG's. The A5 looks to be priced close to the CLK as opposed to the 335. Price wise it seems Audi is moving over BMW and towards Mercedes. We'll see how it works - but they've been selling well worldwide.

Keep in mind, the $81900 is the base price. There will be another $4000 for the premium package, at least $2300 for gas guzzler tax, $775 for shipping, etc, etc. All in, the car will be $90K + ttl.

The market determines what is a rip off. Audi sells all of its RS models because they are limited. I don't see why the are only brining 300 - it should be more like 1000 - but I guess they don't have the capacity. If they were importing 1000 the price would come down a few thousand I think. The more they bring - the cost per unit goes down. Audi has made it clear that they want to make a profit in the U.S. - so if they have to charge a high price for a vehicle they know will sell - that's what they will do. Currency valuations have a lot to do with it. They could definitely sell more than 300 though.
As far as the price - that is near to a CLK AMG.

85k? AUDI LOVES 3RD PLACE... I RATHER A 335 HARDTOP WITH A $2665 Stage 1 Package. For 81K I rather save another 9k and buy a used 2007 Mercedes S550 or a porsche carrera 911 cabrio you can keep the extra .4 seconds from 0 - 60 thank you

0-60mph in 4.3 seconds (est.)
Standing ¼ mile in 12.4 seconds (est.) for $2665 plus the $61k for a fully loaded 335i hard top convertible. I love Audis but I cant make a case for these prices I'll drive slow in the rain thank you.

I've driven the RS4. Love it, but still, $85K is a hard sell. If the argument is the M3 will perform slightly better and will be cheaper, I'm on BMW's side.

BMW4me4ever: last I checked, the RS4 Cab also seats 4 people and i don't believe that the new 3 series Cab is larger than the RS4 Cab.
So it has a hard top?
good...the car is heavier, and there is absolutely no trunk space at all. Did you know that the 3 Series cab is 400 lbs heavier than the old generation?
People looking at the RS4 don't care much about free maintenance; something people looking at a 3 series might. If that is the only argument to sell a car...waow...are you buying a car or free maintenance?
Of course the car is $30k less....it's a 3 series not a M3.
And seeing that the S5 is already faster than the 335, the RS4 will destroy a 335...
The MB, Jag and 650 are all good cars, but they are also very heavy (granted the RS4 is no featherweight either), but put all 3 on a track against the RS4 and see what happens.
The RS4 is quicker than the new M5 and as quick as the M6 at the "Ring"
You must not know that the RS models are all limited production and always come late. It's replacement is not due for AT LEAST 3 years.
So it's O.K for MB to sell a CLK 55 AMG for over $85k,(Plus options and yes I know there is a CLK 63 coming out that is even more expensive!) but when Audi comes out with a RS4 Cab that has more HP, AWD, better equipped and better built and handles far more superior than the CLK will ever do, it's price gouging?????
Give me a break....open your eyes guys
