2008 Best Engine Of the Year Award Winners Hit The Road, Is Your Choice There?
Penton Media's Ward's AutoWorld® magazine has named the winners of its annual listing of North America's "Ten Best Engines." Amid high-profile national debate over automotive fuel-efficiency, these engines reflect the automobile industry's success at improving fuel economy without compromising performance. The awards will be presented at a January 16, 2008 ceremony in Detroit during the North American International Auto Show. Details on Ward's "Ten Best Engines" will be featured in Ward's AutoWorld magazine and on www.wardsauto.com in January 2008.

Selected by Ward's AutoWorld editors, the 2008 list is the magazine's 14th annual ranking; the list is North America's only awards program honoring powertrain excellence.

The 2008 winners are:

• Audi AG: FSI 2.0L turbocharged DOHC I-4 (Audi A3)
• BMW AG: 3.0L turbocharged DOHC I-6 (335i Coupe)
• Daimler AG: 3.0L DOHC V-6 Turbodiesel (Mercedes E320 CDI)
• Ford Motor Co.: 4.6L SOHC V-8 (Mustang Shelby GT/Bullitt)
• General Motors Corp.: 3.6L DOHC V-6 (Cadillac CTS)
• General Motors Corp.: 6.0L OHV V-8 Hybrid (GMC Yukon Hybrid)
• Honda Motor Co. Ltd.: 3.5L SOHC V-6 (Accord Coupe)
• Mazda Motor Corp.: 2.3L DISI turbocharged DOHC I-4 (Mazdaspeed3)
• Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.: 3.7L DOHC V-6 (Infiniti G37)
• Toyota Motor Corp.: 3.5L DOHC V-6 (Lexus IS 350)

"The auto industry is in an era that will force enormous powertrain engineering advances," said Bill Visnic, Ward's editor for technical and special projects. "New fuel-efficiency standards are on the horizon, an improvement the public seems to demand. The fact that more than half of this year's 'Ten Best Engines' winners are six cylinder engines mirrors the shift occurring in the market and on engineering drawing boards."

This year, six Ward's editors nominated 37 engines for the competition. Over two months, editors scored each engine against all others in a number of objective and subjective parameters. Each engine must be available in a regular-production, U.S.-specification model on sale no later than the first quarter of 2008 in a vehicle priced no more than $54,000, a price cap indexed to the average cost of a new vehicle.

Ward's Automotive Group, a Southfield, Mich.-based division of Penton Media, has been a world-leading provider of auto industry news, data and analysis for more than 80 years. Ward's AutoWorld is a monthly magazine serving more than 68,000 automotive professionals globally. WardsAuto.com is an online subscription service delivering virtually all the industry news, data and analysis Ward's produces. Other Ward's titles include: the weekly newsletter Ward's Automotive Reports, monthly magazine Ward's Dealer Business, and a wealth of reference annuals, online databases, and customized data reports.

I think the VQ engine is a great engine; However, myself and many other 6mt owners with the revup version dont think it should be on this list. We'll just see if Infiniti has fixed the oil consumption issues in the VQ for the g37. I've been waiting 8 months already for nissan/infiniti to replace my g35 engine that uses 1qt per 1000 miles and I know many more who are in my position. I'm still waiting for my V2 revup engine they have promised me about 6 months ago when I completed oil consumption testing.

Try stepping on the throttle a bit slower at the beginning to compensate on the lag and increase the rate as you go.

Agreed. Lets hope that with Mercedes winning for their diesel engine, BMW and others will be bringing their diesels over to the States as well. I, too, would love to see a diesel C-Class Mercedes, but I would preferred the BMW 123D diesel instead.

The first three engines on the list are fine but the rest are big nonos. The rest should be vq38 in the gt-r, mercedes 550 and 63 engines, audi 4.2 v8, viper v10, and the Porsche gt2 engine.

If concepts count the mercedes deisotto, hyundai v8 and 3.8 v6

The Best In Their Class?

There's so much 'overlap' in the list that it boggles the mind... Examples:

The BMW AG: 3.0L turbocharged DOHC I-6

The General Motors Corp.: 3.6L DOHC V-6

The Toyota Motor Corp.: 3.5L DOHC V-6

The Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.: 3.7L DOHC V-6

and even (to a lesser extent)

The Honda Motor Co. Ltd.: 3.5L SOHC V-6

Are all variations of the same powerful 6 cylinder theme.

First,
I agree with others that the GM truck engines do not belong here. The engine itself is not the reason why the truck is so good. The reason is because of the mating of the engine to a good hybrid system. Also, I'm not sure about the Mazda engine. Again, is is a great engine, or is it just a mediocre engine with a turbo, put into a fairly light, nimble car? Frankly, I would wonder if any engine relying on a turbo, supercharger or a hybrid can be considered a great engine.

Second,
Wards should really represent some more 4 bangers, ones that achieve high efficiency (mpg or emissions) with decent performance, because as many have pointed out, several engines are from the same class of vehicle. I mean, we get it, any good mfr (except MBZ) can come out with a decent DOHC V6 for their entry sport luxury class.

Just because the 3.5-l V6 from Mercedes doesn't make close to 300-horsepower doesn't mean jack. I've experienced this engine. It's refined, responsive and it is NOT SHORT on power. It's not even underpowered. It's just "weak" when compared to its competitor engines.

There is also a direct injection variant in Europe of the same engine that produces 292-horsepower but is only sold in a special CLS edition called CLS350 CGI.

My two babies, thank you... (-:

And yes, the S4 is "real hard" on gas. Try 15MPG in the city. I'm excited to see the new twin-turbo six S4 get significantly better numbers, both performance-wise and mpg-wise...

I have a G35 and the gas mileage is terrible. 10mpg city and 18mpg hwy. the engine is not as smooth and has no more horse power the the V6 in the IS. and yet it keeps getting one award afetr another. the problem is you don't usually test drive a car long enough to know about the real gas mileage. all the awards don't mean crap to me.

Nothing by Porsche? That's weird. They make engines that are just as good as BMW, with a similar flat torque curve...but better than BMW for this reason: they are flat-6's that are very compact and sit extremely low in the car. I guess that's an attribute that doesn't matter much on the test bench. My only complaint with them is that they are slightly thirsty during normal street driving.

This is, what, the third year for the A3's 2.0T? It definitely deserves it.

So do all the sixes on this list. But I don't think either of those V8s deserved a win. The BMW 4.0L (M3) and Audi 4.2L (RS4) would have been better choices.

And yes, where's Porsche? Their engines are more amazing than ever, combining effortless speed, light weight, intoxicating exhaust notes and great mileage.

Well, in thinking about it more, even though the 2.7 liter would qualify in price terms, it is the same block as the 3.4 S (or I think even the 3.6 and 3.8 base/S 911). That always frustrated me in the past, that Porsche is producing these "different" engines at the same cost to manufacture, but I've come to terms with it. Still, if the block can support 3.8 liters it makes you wonder what they could do with a smaller, dedicated block for a 2.7. Definitely save some weight at least.

I have to agree with the 2.0T, its one of the best 4 cylinders produced. Especially with the DS6 box, its hard to believe the A3 pulls as hard as it does! I think the LS3 deserves an award for 436 hp and avoiding gas guzzler tax. And as much as I like the VQ the IS engine is much better as far as NVH and pulls just as hard.

Barely more torque than the S62 at a 6100 rpm torque peak. To build a big cube V8 with a 7,200 rpm redline is not a feat to be laughed at. The E63 has a much better powerband. And I have an old fashioned 2 valve/cylinder pushrod engine, it did not stop me from blowing an M6 right off the road. What could he say that he lost but was technologically superior? =)

How is the LS3 not a revolutionary engine? Maybe you should read the latest V8 Sports car test? They said the LS3 has the best powerband of any engine in the world. There is no point on the tach where the engine is not making alot of power. And that is what is important. Until then I will continue blowing supposed revolutionary engined cars like the new M3 off the road. While the M3 is waiting on revs I am piling on 10's of mph!
