2008 CHICAGO AUTO SHOW: The 2009 Acura RL Struts New Styling

The redesigned 2009 Acura RL luxury sedan made its world debut today at the Chicago Auto Show. Featuring bold, sleek exterior styling, an upgraded interior, advanced technologies and powerful new engine, the RL once again pushes the limits of performance, style, and luxury. The 2009 RL will go on-sale this spring at Acura dealerships nationwide.

The 2009 RL furthers cutting edge technology with the addition of new high-tech items including AcuraLink® weather, AcuraLink® Traffic Rerouting™, a new Note function for XM® Radio, Active Sound Control, and Bluetooth® Audio to an already robust list of features found on the previous RL. To enhance handling, new chassis technology abounds in the drivetrain in the form of improved Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™, a revised steering system, upgraded coil springs, better performing shock absorbers, larger rear stabilizer bar, and more aggressive wheels and tires. Performance improves with the RL thanks to a new, larger 3.7-liter V-6 that incorporates the first ever SOHC use of VTEC® valvetrain actuation for both the intake and exhaust valves.

"RL represents the very best we have to offer in terms of engineering, technology, performance, luxury and safety", said Dick Colliver, executive vice president, sales. "It's designed for a new generation of performance-luxury buyers looking to travel more quickly, more efficiently and more connected to the world around them."

For 2009, the RL will be offered in three different trim levels including RL, RL with Technology Package and RL with Technology Package Plus CMBS™. All RL's receive a potent new 3.7-liter V-6 engine, Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™, a Bose® Surround Sound audio system, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® connectivity and a GPS-based solar-sensing climate control system. The Technology Package includes the satellite-linked Acura Navigation System with Voice Activation™ with rearview camera, AcuraLink® Real-time traffic, AcuraLink® weather, Traffic Rerouting™, a rear view back-up camera, Active Front Lighting System (AFS), ventilated front seats, and a wood/leather steering wheel and shift knob. The top RL package is the Technology Package with CMBS™ which also includes Acura's acclaimed Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and genuine wood instrument panel trim.

Powertrain
The innovation built into the new RL begins with the most powerful engine ever offered in an Acura sedan. An all-new 3.7-liter V-6 engine develops 300 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque thanks to an innovative new VTEC™ valvetrain system for both the intake and exhaust valves, a higher compression ratio, along with a special dual-stage magnesium intake manifold that enables the intake to function as a single- or dual-plenum manifold design based on engine operating parameters. In addition to developing improved power and torque, the RL engine meets tough CARB ULEV-2 emission standards and delivers good fuel economy. The RL's engine bay appears more upscale thanks to a new surround panel assembly that reduces visual distractions and focuses attention directly on the all-new 3.7-liter V-6 engine.

To handle the higher power of the 3.7-liter engine, a new version of the Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic transmission is fitted to the 2009 RL. Featuring new "smart" F1®-style steering wheel mounted paddle shifters and a new straight-gate
console mounted gear selector, the RL driver now has more gear control than ever before.

The RL's acclaimed Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD™) system returns for 2009, but is now quicker responding and better performing.

There are numerous traction advantages of all-wheel drive, yet SH-AWD™ does a key function that is not available with traditional AWD systems-- SH-AWD™ utilizes torque vectoring to increase the rotation speed of an outside rear wheel during aggressive cornering to help the car turn more effectively while under power. This "yaw" function reduces the cornering load on the front tires to minimize understeer, to improve handling balance, and to escalate total cornering grip.

Body and Chassis
To further enhance handling and ride comfort, the new RL retains a fully independent suspension system with front double-wishbone and rear multi-link architecture. For 2009 the RL features higher rate coil springs, larger diameter stabilizer bars, stiffer subframe mount bushings and improved design steering rack components. To further improve handling and looks, new 18-inch diameter 7-spoke aluminum wheels are matched with more aggressive tires (replacing the previous 17-inch wheel/tire offering).

Exterior/Interior
The 2009 RL's new exterior styling is not only more aggressive, but delivers excellent aerodynamics and reduced rear lift at higher speeds. The RL's more athletic style foreshadows the power concealed by the new power plenum front grille and blow-formed aluminum hood. The RL's shape is taut and athletic, and its acceleration and cornering performance allow it to challenge the most capable German and Japanese sports sedans. Comfort, quietness and ride quality are also on a par with performance sedan competitors. For 2009, eight exterior colors are available--5 of which are new--including a new pearl pigment process that improves luster and shine.

Inside, the 2009 RL features a more elegantly styled interior that includes more room for rear seat passengers, easier-to-use front seat belts, door-mounted pull pockets, softer arm rests, redesigned vents, larger/clearer lettering for HVAC controls, and easier actuation of climate control functions. A revised steering wheel with available genuine wood trim (included with the CMBS package) and metal-look accents is now fitted to the RL along with a matching wood-trimmed transmission shift knob. Complementing the steering wheel are upgraded gauges that incorporate brushed metal accents for enhanced appearance. For 2009, additional insulation, a more high-tech design of Acura's acoustic glass windshield, and a new Active Sound Control (ASC) noise abatement system team to further reduce the RL's already quiet cabin.

The RL's perforated leather front seats now incorporate six levels of heated/cooled ventilation. Moreover, just like the driver's seat, the passenger front seat now has 10-way power adjustability. For 2009, the center panel controls are now more intuitive and are surrounded by a new background color along with improved quality wood patterned panels. These interior upgrades are complimented by advanced electronics that include a satellite-linked Acura Navigation System with Voice Activation™ along with the innovative AcuraLink® satellite communication system with Real-time traffic, AcuraLink® Traffic Rerouting™ and (new for 2009) AcuraLink® weather. The RL is the first vehicle on the market to feature in-dash integrated, continually updated real-time weather information in a single-screen format. The spectacular Acura/Bose® 10-speaker Sound System with DVD-Audio returns but is now upgraded to include Bluetooth® Audio, even richer audio sound, a new Note function for XM® Radio, improved button legibility, and a USB connectivity port.

Safety
The 2009 RL retains Acura's extremely rigid Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure that features extensive use of high-tensile steel and lightweight aluminum components to take vehicle construction beyond conventional safety protocols while keeping overall vehicle weight in check. The ACE™ structure's front-mounted polygonal main frame is designed to help prevent cabin deformation by distributing frontal impact forces through multiple load bearing pathways--and away from the passenger compartment. For 2009, to enhance safety a new Active Head Restraint System is built into the front seats to help improve neck and head protection in the event in a rear impact collision. To further aid in safety, the RL includes as standard a passenger seatbelt reminder, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and six airbags. These advances team to make the 2009 RL the strongest, most powerful, best handling, safest and most luxurious sedan Acura has ever built.

The RL earned 5-star ratings (the best possible) for frontal and side crash tests, and for rollover resistance, from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The RL is the fourth vehicle in the history of the program to earn the top rating of "5-star" in all three test categories. Government star ratings are part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (www.safercar.gov). In addition, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the RL its top rating of GOOD in Side Impact Collision Evaluation (SICE) along with a GOOD rating for IIHS' frontal offset crash test. With a new Active Head Restraint System for front seat passengers, the 2009 RL is anticipated to receive a GOOD rating in IIHS rear crash protection evaluation.

This thing looks much too similar to a Honda Accord, but with a gaudy exterior and interior. I'd definitely consider a Hyundai Genesis over this offal.

I hate the grille also, especially that big splash or chrome or satin finish or whatever across the top. I am also not fond of Honda's AWd system with front and rear axles deliberately rotating at slightly different speeds (accommodated by slipping clutches that constantly wear out).

OH my...what happened? The interior looks just fine, but they really fudged up the exterior even more. The tail looks like the last generation Accord with some current Accord. The front...I can't even find something nice to say. I like Honda/Acura's, had one of each, but this is just not going in the right direction.

Is that a Bangle Butt? Add that to the grafted on MDX grill, and you have a styling mess.

Nice engine upgrade, but all the competitors have that much power as their BASE engine, with upgrades of 40-80 hp available as options.

Combined with yesterday's TSX/Fusion spyshots, things are not looking well for the brand that started an automotive revolution back in 1986. It is sad.

if they're not going to offer a v8, they could at least fit the six with turbos and make the car interesting. the new 'styling' (if you call that style) isn't good. The only thing that keeps it's new details from being hideous is the fact that the overall shape is so nondescript.

Are they serious?!?! I was really thinking this car was going to be hot, the previous RL still was great looking and they trashed the exterior.

Agree w/ the nice interior and engine upgrades, but damn, i hope this car looks a LOT better in person. I never like when the shots of a new model are that awful beige color...kinda like the tsx shots we just got. Acura is really disappointing - maybe theres still hope for the TL, but i doubt it.

Ok,

This, IMO, marks the unquestionable 'Beginning Of The End' for the Acura brand.

With a full appreciation for them having started the Premium Japanese market (in the U.S.), I feel that it's finally time for them to prepare their concession speech, and allow Infiniti and Lexus to carry out the mission at hand... Because with (lack of) efforts like this and the new TSX, they apparently have neither the talent nor the desire to truly compete in this market any longer.

Leave this market to Lexus and Infiniti to be the Japanese offerings.

the upgrade, face lift whatever you wanna call that Acura did on the '09 RL is fine except for that ugly "shield" that they have put on the grill. If they had just put a big Acura logo in middle or something to that effect, it would have been fine. But that shield totally ruins the front look of this car.

WTF??? I got used to seeing that large grille on the MDX, but on a sedan?!?! Looks like the front end of the Family Truckster from National Lampoon's Vacation!

The tail end looks like an Accord had butt sex with a 7 series and the front area around the grille is purely Accord with Subaru Legacy headlamps (projectors)

Seriously, what a POS! Not to mention Honda still has yet to offer the V8 promised to come on the MDX and Pilot as optionals and be on the RL!

Acura and Honda have totally failed this round of redesigns. Even the Civic took some getting used to, now there is nothing on their lot I even pay notice to anymore. They are starting to make the boxed out Nissan Sentra look stylish!

I'm sure it will be a very good car (still overpriced) but I'm thinking these guys are just incapable of making their production cars look good (I fell in love with the Sports4). I see bits and pieces of the concept but it's all hobbled together, like, as someone on ToV said, a madlibs story...a story that just doesn't make sense...

I think I would shed a tear if it wasn't so amazingly absurd.

Hideous.

It seems as if Acura is trying to become Audi--distinctive grille shape, AWD, high tech, luxurious interiors--but without any inspiration. It's what the Audi brand would be like... if it wasn't German.

And they're regressing with each and every new model. This car makes the TL look absolutely beautiful.

The interior looks great. I love that new wood trim, and the nav system is cutting-edge.

But that's not enough to sell a luxury sedan any more. Acura could've just killed itself with this new model.

I know the cool and the 'in' thing to do is hate all new concepts and call them 'fugly' but I've always thought outside the box, and for myself. Personally I don't think it's bad at all. It's a conservative design, but what do you expect from a conservative company. But even so, it's far from ugly. I'd find myself in one of these before the m35x or gs awd.

toyota: Top of the list for 2008: Hire a completely distinct design team for your lexus division. DO NOT, under any circumstance, allow teams to converse with eachother. Better yet, have them based out of different cities. Not to say that the cars cannot share underpinnings, just keep the exterior and interior designers seperate! Thanks!

You ever thought to think that the new Accord looks like this after all this was out first, shit the 05-08 had identical tailights to the Accord. I am a big LS fan but the rear looks exactly like a Camry on steriods and people don't complain, my point is of course brands with parent companies will share themes it's how you save cost, people were saying Acura needs to be more aggressive and when they do they hate. My girlfriend seen shots on the new RL and liked it right away, my point is as long as Acura attacks buyers that do not know nothing about cars they will sell and I think that is all that matters.
Further more after seeing the grill on a darker coler I am definately liking it I didn't realize it had to more vertical crossbars below which you can't see on the silver color, who buys silver cars anyways? If this was Lexus trying something bold like this everyone would be applauding I believe when the RL comes down thhe road just like the MDX you will know, it's about status Caddilac does it with their big grills why can't Acura try?
The only thing I do not like about the car it seems the Jap you assembled the first one must have fell asleep and the others followed, because the hoodline does not match with the fenders! All in all good effort Acura alot more bling what America wants and tech will hold over untill the V-10 with cylinder deactivation arrives "advance".
Sorry you guys were looking for something more vanilla, but the Japanese are coming for the Germans, Like someone said on the temple of VTec, "Atleast it looks classier than the E Class".
You can deboost me all you guys want but as long as you read this I have accomplished what I want and when it arrives in showrooms than you guys can make your opinions.
ie no more it doesn't have cooled seats", whats up with no passanger 10 way seat", rear leg room is tight" No torque and HP" etc.. etc.
Remember this is a GS and M35 fighter not a LS and M45 fighter and as far as I am concerned it competes with GS and M35.
