2008 Chevy Tahoe Two-Mode Hybrid wins Green Car of the Year Award
We're here at the Los Angeles Auto Show for the announcement of the 2007 Green Car of the Year. Three of the five finalists for this year's prize originate from within the halls of General Motors with the other two coming from Nissan and Mazda. The Two-Mode Chevy Tahoe hybrid, the Saturn Aura hybrid, the Chevy Malibu hybrid, Nissan Altima and Mazda Tribute hybrid are all lined up here.

The show starts in about five minutes and apparently the Governator is supposed to be part of the event. Keep following the live coverage after the jump.
The Malibu and Aura seem like unlikely candidates for victory due to their mild hybrid systems and the Tribute is a re-badged Escape hybrid. The leaves the Altima and Tahoe as best bets. I'm guessing it will be the Tahoe because of the innovative Two-Mode hybrid system.
The show is now beginning. This is the third annual award and Ron Cogan of Green Car Journal is now on stage. He is talking about the increasing awareness of efficiency as gas prices continue to climb. To qualify for the award the nominees have to be available by Jan. 1

While PHEVs and BEVs are great they aren't readily available and affordable. The focus for this award is vehicles that can make a real impact today.

Carol Pope, Jean Michel Cousteau, Jay Leno, Carrol Shelby and others joined Green Car Journal editors in choosing the award winner.

And the winner is....

The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Two-Mode Hybrid!

It is a not a CAR! It is a BIG Gargantuan SUV! How is an EPA of 20 mpg hwy....being considered "green"? A regular 4 cylinders car is more "green" on the hwy than this monster!

Doesn't make sense, I wouldn't call this "green" as this car is still burning a gallon of gas every 20 miles vs. someone buying a normal civic with 30mpg. Soccer moms, this is not a necessary vehicle!

Apparently VALUE wasn't a factor in this determination...

Nice that GM is getting so much positive press these days though.

I owned a full-size Chevy Express van and got nearly as good mileage.

But my van had probably 2X the interior room and just as much towing capacity.

if you look at the line of judges, 99% percent of them own domestics...love them one way, but a bunch of bias punks on the other...

From what I gather, this decision was made in Los Angeles by a bunch of local juries. Bias? Oh yeah!

and an inline twin turbo v6, is revolutionary? There's always someone crying BIAS, when it comes to american domestics and jap cars, winning accolade.

Oh please. I like cars from all countries. There's simply nothing green about the Tahoe hybrids or most hybrids in general. Once you leave the urban environment they all guzzle like crazy thanks in part to the added weight they need to haul around.

Prius guy over here supports this win. I myself am not gonna run out and buy one of these to save the planet. But it represent another great application of hybrid technology. Some people will never give up on full size SUVs. I hope each one of them considers the hybrid as an option.

I know it's priced high, but everyone complains that hybrids will never pay off anyway. Why should this be any different? We early adopters are willing to pay to do our part. Maybe forego the dubs, the leather, the Nav, whatever else rings up the bill, and get the hybrid option intead. (Those are probably all standard on the hybrid anyway, but ya get my point.)

WTG GM!!

Now if we could just get a hybrid option on the '09 Sequoia. Hello, Toyota, ya got any extra batteries laying around???

Not sure if this is true but someone told me TAHOE means "retarded redneck" in Hungarian slang. Anyone here to confirm this ?

Some of you people need to grow up and quite being so closed minded. If you read the original article from Green Cars. People are going to buy these big trucks and SUV's because they are so useful. Having some that get better gas milage than the standard non hybrid models will save a lot of energy. Plus this is not the only hybrid from GM. They have a whole line to choose from from small car to the big SUV. Its called having a choice. I know that some of you dont understand this because you dont have enogh of it in you're country but here in the US we demand it. Get a clue people, after you read the article and you still have the same opinion then thats great. Its you're words.
