2008 Corvette Competition Special Edition Revealed
In addition to the limited-edition Corvette Victory Edition, a second special version of the all-American sports car will be introduced this spring, the Corvette Competition. This model, built in limited numbers on the basis of the C6 Coupé, bears strong links to motor sport too, in which the Corvette has proven highly successful. The Corvette Competition will be offered at a competitive price.

The new Corvette Competition is launched to celebrate the start of a new racing season. The 56th edition of the legendary Sebring Twelve Hours on 15 March was the first race in the American Le Mans Series championship (ALMS). In Sebring Corvette Racing scored another double victory in the GT1 category. The special Competition version of ALMS-champion Corvette bears subtle resemblances to the successful C6.R race car. The number of available options on the new car is limited, in order to save as much weight as possible. Another point in common are the air scoops with honeycomb pattern in the front grill and in between the double twin exhaust pipes at the rear. The rear spoiler, borrowed from the Z06 model, not only contributes to excellent aerodynamic properties but is evidence to the Corvette’s fine motor sport heritage as well. The bold looks of the Corvette Competition are complemented by 5-spoke alloys (18 inch at the front, 19 inch at the rear) in the colour Competition Grey. Another distinguishing feature of this limited-edition Corvette is its body colour: black.

The Corvette Competition boasts a 6.2 V8 engine and choice of a 6-speed manual gearbox or automatic transmission. Delivery of the new Corvette model starts in April 2008, and the car can be ordered from authorized Corvette dealers as of now.

All they gotta do is get rid of that crude and trucky pushrod and drop in an ultra smooth DOHC and Vette will finally have world class refinement that compliments it's sleek shape. Car will also get a better rep and more sales as more import buyers give it more serious considerations. Even current buyers(old folks) will appreciate the greatly improved NVH.

where do you get this crap from? those 'crude' pushrod engines run as smoothly as anything else. the Z06's 'crude' pushrod engine revs higher than the DOHC Lexus V8. the only NVH is the exhaust rumble, which is intentional.
do you actually drive cars? or do you just repeat stupid things that you hear other people say without fact checking?

That's pretty dumb. Umm...no dissing the leafsprings Boss? That's the usual mantra. Pushrods and leafsprings blah blah blah.

And it was the most powerful Vette ever at that time and still remains the smoothness and most refine to this day even if todays cruderod has surpassed it in hp/torque(due mostly to increase in displacement and supercharging).

TheBoss...The old ZR1 didn't have as much power as the standard vette now has. The motor was overly complicated and cost too much money for what it was.

...and so far nobody has been able to touch that "crude" pushrod. DUH.

More like nobody wants to touch it.

Ever heard of GT-R, the ZO6 Vette killer?

Ever heard of the new ZR1, the GT-R killer? Oh yea, with the "crude" pushrod motor. The Z06 is kind of old school in comparison isn't it? By the way, let's wait until we actually see production GT-R's beating the Z06. Not a potentially over-boosted factory supplied car used for media purposes.

I think you're a little behind the time, just like the cruderod motor. GT-R has already beaten various Porsche, M3 and ZO6 Vette. Go read up on it. GM has said ZR-1 will be softer than ZO6, it's only advantage is power. But with only 2wd, Without better tires, GT-R will eat it up on the track. On the street, ZR1 vette is useless except annoying other motorists as it rudely shakes other cars next to it.

TheBoss... stop reading magazines and blogs, go out and actually drive some different cars so that you don't sound so stupid when you make statements. What are you, 14?

The Z06 motor is more powerful and more fuel efficient than both the BMW M V10 and the M-B AMG 6.2 V8.
Furthermore, GM's pushrod V8's idle extremely smoothly. The traditional disadvantage of a pushrod motor is lack of high-end power development and revving ability - not smoothness. GM's pushrod V8 in fact runs more smoothly than Nissan's thrashy DOHC 3.5 VQ V6. Also, Nissan's exhaust sounds like one long fart. It is obvious that you don't actually know what you're talking about.

Just because a technology has been around longer does not automatically make it obsolete. Ask the Windows Vista users who are flocking back to XP.

The most expensive Bentleys (Arnage, Brooklands) use pushrod V8s. If it's good enough for a $400k Bentley, then it's just fine for everyone else.

Once again, any rumbling that you see and/or hear from the engine bay/exhaust pipes of a Corvette is purely intentional, to give the driver that visceral feeling of raw power, barely restrained. You don't get it.

@ TheBoss,

Give it a rest, man. The GT-R and IS-F are nice cars, but that's not what this blog post is about. When the blog post comes with a comparison test, then maybe we'll listen to you. Right now, you just sound like an overzealous Japanese PR guy who was foolish enough to flap your lips for free instead of working for one of the mfg.

That said, GM deserves props for continuing to improve on the old pushrod. Yeah, I kind of wish they would use something more modern, but you can't knock them for not doing it. 26mpg hwy! Name another car that with similar performance figures that can match it?

Not sure why some folks think that because it has pushrods it has to be rough. Standing in front of my Z06 with the engine running you can barely tell it's running. Sitting at a light you feel nothing - unless you put your foot into it. In the past 6 years I have had an E500, an S4, an LS430 and a new MDX. Not only does the Z06 run as smoothly as those, it has made far fewer visits to the dealer than the MB did. If Boss is anywhere near Chicago, come take my Z06 for a ride - you will be a changed man!
