2008 DETROIT AUTO SHOW: Honda's Next Generation Pilot

A prototype of the next-generation Honda Pilot is being unveiled at the 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.

The prototype conveys design features of the more boldly-styled 2009 Pilot, set to debut in spring 2008, which emphasizes authentic SUV styling, clever and more accommodating interior packaging and advanced technologies for safety, fuel efficiency and convenience.

"The Pilot's pioneering formula improves for 2009 by enhancing its combination of refinement and efficiency with even more traditional SUV strengths," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. "A powerful exterior design communicates strength and allows for more space inside."

Functional eight-passenger seating, a hallmark of the Pilot, becomes even easier to access in the third row as key dimensions for legroom, cargo and occupant space increase in all seating positions. A redesigned platform allows even more refined handling and ride comfort to exist seamlessly with all-weather and medium-duty off-road capabilities.

To further enhance safety, the Pilot will feature the Honda-exclusive Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE®) body structure and the most extensive use of high-strength steel in any Honda product to date.

The ACE body structure enhances frontal collision compatibility with vehicles of different sizes and bumper heights. A pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front of the vehicle is designed to help absorb energy in the event of a collision.

A crossover SUV platform underpins the Pilot to provide the best of the car and truck worlds by integrating the refined traits and packaging advantages of a unit body car design with the utility and capability of an SUV design. A V-6 engine introduces the latest generation of Honda fuel-saving Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®) technology that operates in 6-cylinder mode for power and 4- and 3-cylinder modes for efficiency, an improvement compared to the existing Pilot's available VCM system that works exclusively in 6- and 3-cylinder modes.

Three rows of seats provide a high degree of adaptability for people and large cargo loads. The first row provides a commanding view of the road from two captains' chairs. A wide center stack and center console form the styling anchor for the interior with a design that emphasizes spaciousness and power, while allowing for convenient access to navigation, entertainment and climate-control systems.

The 60/40 split second row, now more spacious, slides further forward for increased ease of access to the third row. The 60/40 split third row, now supplies enough knee room for an above-average-sized adult male to fit comfortably, making the Pilot's third row among the most practical in the industry. Each side of the second and third row independently folds down for cargo. A flat floor is created when the second and third rows are folded down.

The Pilot originally debuted as a 2003 model in July of 2002. Design and development of the 2003 Pilot and the 2009 Pilot were carried out at Honda R&D Americas in Raymond, Ohio, and Torrance, California. The Pilot is assembled* at Honda Manufacturing of Alabama in Lincoln.

Certainly an improvement in many ways, but...

It sure does look like an extremely bloated version of the last generation Jeep Liberty with a silly looking grill.

That interior design sure pushes the envelope though...

In a Rather Good Way!

Agreed! That interior is light years ahead of the current generation. Let's hope it makes it to production.

Improvement over what...a mummified rat?

We must be looking at different cars. It's ugly and looks like a Dodge Nitro. Honda is going in a really bad direction, and they kicked it off with the Accord.

This is a poor redesign, seems like a really big Scion. Old Pilot was boxy, but at least well proportioned, this one is bloated and ugly from front to back. It seems like a Honda took the old design and just screwed it up. I think Honda will loose sales on this one. Honda needs to get better designers.

It reminds me of some bloated old Acura MDX.. They could do much better than this.

Front end is awfully ugly. What with Honda and these ugly grills lately?
Decent redesign though. Not special...Just decent.

definitely ugly front grille.... the rest is basic, plain looking.

Extremely plain, you're right. In fact, I find it hard to fathom that Honda could produce a car more stylistically boring than the current Pilot, but I think they've done it.

First time poster - long time reader....

OMG -- wow, Honda just keeps using the ugly stick...

Did they outsource this to Dodge/Chrysler? Omitting the nose....the rest looks like a crazy mix between the new Town & Country and the Nitro...

Interior is interesting....best part of the design.

Call me crazy, but I like the current one better. Maybe the actual production Pilot will look better than this concept (let's hope).

Truly bland. Interior is decent, but probably still 10-20% concept. Style-wise the Mazda RX-9 and GM Lambdas have nothing to worry about. No doubt the engineering will be good and the public will buy it because it is a Honda.

Big disappointment. I don't know why I was expecting much more, but I was. I like the current Pilot - it might be boxy and boring, but it has a very classic utilitarian look. It was definitely time to move the game forward, but this is not the way. The interior is not doing much for me either.

It will be another good Honda that people will buy in spite of its looks. I've been in the current Pilot EXL, and this car has impressed me with it's functionality and quality, especially for the money. But as the competition improves dynamically and in looks (CX-9, Lambdas), Honda better get its styling act together.

Even if it is reliable, I think Honda should expect a complete drop in sales for the Pilot. This will not cut it for where the market is headed (high gas prices). New Pilot looks like a gas guzzler.

Honda really screwed up big time and heads need to roll over this. How can the same company design the FCX Clarity and this new Pilot.

I really hope this does not make production. It makes the MDX look very well designed in comparison.

The GMs, CX-9 and Highlander (also ugly in the front) will slaughter the Pilot in sales.

GM, Toyota and Ford just dodged a bullet with thier new crossovers. This thing is ugly, it almost looks like a Chinese interpertation of a Land Rover.

Eeeewwwww how ugly. What is wrong with the designer at Honda. I won't be caught dead in or around that thing. It's even uglier than the Pontiac Aztec.

Now I don't know which one is the ugliest - the Ridgeline or this new Pilot!
This design should certainly polarize buyers. My guess is that will not bump sales in the direction Honda wants it to.

I like it. It's much better than the Pathfinder and better than the 4Runner (whose interior I loathe - that's why I traded mine). I like the look better than the GM crossovers as it is reminiscent of the last-generation Isuzu Trooper which was one of the best designed SUVs ever.

This new Honda Pilot is soooo UGLY it defies description. This albatross looks like it was designed in Russia not by Honda (and that is a disservice to the Russians).

What the heck was Honda thinking (or not in this case)?

If the new Pilot was a hybrid, it would be all the rage...especially if the leather seats were green rather than blue.
