2008 DETROIT AUTO SHOW: The 2009 Toyota Venza Crossover

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA Inc unveiled the all-new 2009 Venza crossover sedan at a press conference here today at the 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Venza will raise the crossover vehicle to new levels by combining a unique blend of sedan refinement and sport utility vehicle (SUV) functionality.

"The all-new Venza was developed as a vehicle that combines the styling, comfort and fun-to-drive performance elements of a five-passenger sedan with the surprising utility of an SUV," said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. "This winning combination will be ideal for active ‘boomers' and young couples with small families."

All aspects of Venza's engineering and design were targeted specifically for the North American market where it will be sold exclusively. Venza was primarily engineered at Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., and designed at Toyota's Calty design studios in Newport Beach, Calif. and Ann Arbor, Mich. Venza will be assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK), in Georgetown, Ky.

The development focus of the Venza design team was to create a new crossover vehicle that shifted away from the more traditional SUV styling themes that tend to dominate the segment. Calty designers leaned more heavily on a sleek sedan concept with a wide stance that featured a sporty exterior and premium comfort interior but would also be equipped with important SUV attributes such as cargo space, towing capability and all-wheel-drive performance.

The exterior design of the four-door Venza begins with an imposing front end featuring a distinctive grille, headlights and fog lamps for an aggressive, yet classy appearance. The front conforms to a sleek and aerodynamic shape with short overhangs, crisp character lines and a roofline and ground clearance that are lower than a typical crossover. From behind, Venza's refined appearance is complete with an angled rear hatch, rear spoiler and wide wraparound tail lights that interconnect with the hatch door.

On the inside, Calty designers and TTC engineers made comfort, refinement and utility a priority for the five-passenger Venza. A lower rocker design will allow occupants to more easily step in and out of the vehicle than a typical sedan. Venza will also feature a higher ride height and hip points that will help provide significantly better driver visibility than most sedans and easier ingress and egress than most SUVs.

Venza will feature a spacious interior providing ample room for all five passengers and abundant SUV-like cargo space behind the second row of seats. The rear hatch provides a low cargo height that allows for easy loading and unloading of luggage and outdoor gear. Easy-to-use levers, one on each side of the rear cargo area, allow the 60/40 split rear seats to fold flat, providing additional storage space for extra long items such as surf boards, skis, camping gear and gardening equipment. For added passenger comfort, the rear seats recline up to 14 degrees.

A creative interior design complemented with an array of comfort and convenience features provides Venza with a refined look and feel that is commonly reserved for a luxury sedan. The flow of the instrumentation panel (IP) creates a unique 60/60 design that gives both driver and front passenger the look and feeling that 60 percent of the IP is accessible from their seating position.

An extra long center console extends from the IP and slopes down to a center compartment with a unique sliding console cover. Sliding open the compartment lid reveals a large storage well deep enough to hold a large purse. The compartment is also illuminated and equipped with an auxiliary audio jack and 12-volt power point. The upper portion of the center console houses the gear-shift lever for easy and comfortable driver access. Climate control functions are centrally located on the upper center console, providing easy accessibility for both driver and passenger. The center console also contains an iPod/MP3 storage compartment with wire management and illuminated dual cupholders.

All Venza models will be equipped with an array of standard features including auto dual zone air conditioning, AM/FM six-disc CD, tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio controls, remote keyless entry, electrochromic rearview mirror with compass, a multi-information display, cruise control, optitron gauges, rear wiper, privacy glass, and much more. On V6 models Venza will come standard with dual exhaust tips and will be the first Toyota model to ride on standard 20-inch alloy wheels. Four-cylinder models will come standard with 19-inch alloy wheels.

Chrome accents throughout give Venza a refined look and feel. Models equipped with an optional leather-trimmed interior will feature wood-grain-type trim and seats stitched with dark piping that is tastefully coordinated with Venza's standard linear grain dashboard and steering wheel. An array of storage space will be available throughout the vehicle to accommodate passenger belongings. A large storage compartment with an additional 12-volt power point located on the passenger side of the front center console will be sizeable enough to contain maps and magazines.

A panoramic roof will be offered as an option and will be a first for the Toyota vehicle lineup. The roof will feature separate glass panels over the front and rear seats. The front glass panel will have a power tilt/slide function.

Venza will also offer an Automatic High Beam headlight system, another Toyota first. When high beam headlights are in use sensors in the Automatic High Beam system will detect oncoming traffic and automatically switch the headlights to low-beam. When the Automatic High Beam sensors no longer detect oncoming traffic the system will switch the headlights back to high-beam mode.

Additional optional equipment will include a navigation system equipped with a JBL audio system, integrated satellite radio capability and Bluetooth® technology; a premium JBL audio system with AM/FM six-disc CD changer, satellite radio capability and Bluetooth®, rear seat entertainment system, a Smart Key System, back-up camera and a power rear door.

The sleek and sporty styling, refined interior and outstanding utility features are complemented with fun-to-drive performance attributes expected by owners with active lifestyles. Aggressive handling typically found in a performance coupe is well-balanced by the on-road comfort of an upscale sedan.

Venza will be available in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. It will provide drivers and passengers the best of both worlds by delivering the quiet comfortable ride expected from a full-size sedan along with the peace-of-mind that comes with all-wheel-drive.

Power will be generated by an available 3.5-liter V6 that will produce 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 246 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,700 rpm with a towing capability of 3,500 pounds. Standard power will come from an all-new 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that will deliver capable performance and provide excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions. Both engines will be mated with a six-speed sequential-shift electronically-controlled automatic transmission.

Venza will be equipped with a comprehensive list of standard safety features. It will provide a total of seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag, front seat-mounted side airbags, and side curtain airbags for both rows of seats. Venza will also be the first sedan with Toyota's STAR safety system, featuring anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, and vehicle stability control. Venza will also feature active head rests as standard equipment.

"Venza will establish an exciting new crossover niche that will combine the finest attributes of Toyota's diverse vehicle lineup," said Carter. "It will cater to buyers who are looking for the value and reliability of a Camry, the comfort and upscale refinement of an Avalon, and the utility and functionality of a Highlander SUV in one very stylish and sporty package."

"When it goes on sale in late 2008, the Venza crossover sedan will represent Toyota's latest commitment to driving change in the marketplace."

Honestly, it seems like Toyota has perfected the art of making Bland-looking cars. Why are they so scared to do something out of the ordinary?
Unfortunately, this may be what the majority of the country likes. Car lovers like us are so few, that they would not make a car for us unless they are trying to fill a niche(that's the reality)!!

It's not like Toyota is short on cash, like some makers.
This is their answer to Ford Edge, which isn't really a Highlander or Rav4 competitor.
Maybe people would like a SUV that get Avalon/Camry economy, with cargo room to spare?
Easily beats going to Ford. I like cars that work.

i think u r talking about R class.

this Toyota is definately not Unnecessery as there is a market for such a car at this price point(as this will be definately half the price of R class) and therfore makes much more sense.

and btw it looks better than the R Class too.

This vehicle's little more than a Camry 5-Door.

I mean, it only has 2 rows of seats (seating for 5), at least the R-Class provides a usable third row seating (as unattractive as it is to most).

Why are people faulting it for only having seating for 5? The Highlander already seats 7. Crossover vehicles from both SUV and sedan origins are popular right now. It is called cashing in on a trend.

Havent you been saying how great the X6 is all month? What is the point indeed. Yes the RAV4 has grown, but it is still a compact CUV (CRV, Escape, etc.) The Highlander is the large CUV (Acadia, TaurusX, Flex?, CX9). Toyota needed something in the middle (Edge, Equinox, CX7). Toyota basically invented the CUV class, you dont really think they will cede any aspect of it to the competiton do you? What is the point? I think it is obvious. This car will be a huge hit, and the other Toyota products are not likely to suffer one bit.

How is it obvious? Toyota already has--count 'em--FIVE SUVs in its lineup, and there's simply no room for a "middle" between the RAV4 and the Highlander. This just doesn't make sense.

The X6 is not made for practical reasons. BMW, like all high-volume, high-profit luxury brands, can have pet projects. The X6 is that. However, this car is supposed to be a crossover for the masses. They cannot be compared. There is no point to this car. It is only taxing an already-flooded market.

"Havent you been saying how great the X6 is all month?"

And, by the way, my answer? The X6 is stunning. It makes a statement. It is luxurious, just like the X5. It handles like a dream. It has fantastic engines.

This car? It has none of those things. Are you saying I should like it because it's also a crossover? Are you mad?

I'm not going to get into a personal argument with you, S4. But your distaste for Toy/Lex has gotten extreme in the past few months. Maybe it is Autospies burnout. I understand. But this car makes perfect sense. Not only does it keep Toyota competitive in the smaller end of the mid-sized CUV class, but it more completely splits the difference between sedan and CUV than its competitors. And it does so in a stylish way with a fantastic engine choices. Kinda like the X6, huh.

1970toyotamarc1970toyotamarc - 1/14/2008 9:57:58 PM
+2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
And it's not the numer of SUVs that is the issue, it is the number of CUV's. I know you thoroughly understand the distinction.

2 examples

Tribute, CX7, CX9
Escape, Edge, TaurusX (soon to be Flex)

I shouldnt add the BMW example, because I do understand that as a luxury make, it plays on a different field. But just in case you still dont see my point....
X3, X6, X5

3 sizes.

This is the new Math in CUVs. Like it or not.

"But your distaste for Toy/Lex has gotten extreme in the past few months."

Oh, has it? Wasn't I the person who just said how much I liked the LF-A convertible concept? Didn't I say the new Land Cruiser looked great? How about how many times I've praised the LS460?

So if I don't like this new "Venza," I must have an "extreme distaste" for Toyota and Lexus?

That is true, but the Highlander and RAV4 are both very similar in size to this car. I like the way it looks (surprised?), but I just think six different SUV and SUV-type vehicles is unnecessary. CUV, SUV, whatever, they all serve the same purpose. In fact, EVERY Toyota SUV is now available with seven seats. Why?

1970toyotamarc1970toyotamarc - 1/15/2008 6:26:39 PM

Yes, yes, as soon as I posted my response, I knew I had made a faux-pas, my bad. I knew you would reply with loving the LF-A and LS460 (certainly not the LS600hL). I am surprised about the Land Cruiser tho, hadnt seen any of your posts extolling that one, in fact I dont remember reading many posts from anyone on this site praising the LC except maybe Jugnu. I cant pay too much attention to everyone's loves and hates, way too much info overload for something that shouldnt take up this much of my time as it is.

I guess because when you do hate a Toyota or Lexus it takes on a pretty high intensity. But whatever, it matters not for the purposes of this discussion what you do or do not like. Regarding this car, your initial assesment is just simply wrong. And I do not base that on opinion, but on evidence. The evidence that no less than Ford, BMW, and Mazda are already pursuing this three CUV strategy. This is clearly where we are heading.

"I guess because when you do hate a Toyota or Lexus it takes on a pretty high intensity."

That's true, but I cannot stop myself. When people hate on a car I love, it's in my nature (and apparently everyone else's) to hate back.

I will admit that the Venza looks good, as well put together and classy as any other Toyota. That may sound odd, but compared to most other non-luxury brands, they look expensive.

In the LC's case... well, it doesn't just LOOK expensive. But I do think it's worth it.

"The evidence that no less than Ford, BMW, and Mazda are already pursuing this three CUV strategy. This is clearly where we are heading."

However, BMW has three SUVs, Mazda has two and Ford has too many, like Toyota. Why does Toyota need SIX SUVs? I just don't get it. Ford has SEVEN including the Expedition EL and upcoming Flex! It's just unnecessary! The Seqouia can be dumped, and even the 4Runner can probably be dumped. That makes for a much tidier lineup. Nobody in the US does off-roading any more.

In a way, this sort of looks like the Ford Edge with that front-end.

It may not make much sense, but it is a crossover, which are really popular right now, regardless of whichever ones are pointless (Venza, X6) and which ones are not (?).

I cant tell you how excited I am for this. Not because it i the perfect size that was missing from Toy's CUV lineup. Hey, if Mazda (MAZDA!!!) can have a Tribute, CX7 and CX9; if Ford can have an Escape, Edge, TaurusX AND Flex, then Toyota neeeds this perfectly sized car.

I should be excited by the fact that there is finally a 5 door Camry (let's be be honest here) to replace the scary looking Camry wagon of the 90's. It would be awesome to have this in a hybrid, as I beleive many people would prefer the Camry hybrid over the Prius, but dont buy it beacuse it is a 4 door. (Hybrid buyers are very practical ya know. But that is still not the biggest news.

The best story here is the new 2.7L 4 cylinder. If this is a replacement for the 2.4, this is huge news. That engine is EVERYWHERE. Camry, RAV4, Solara, Corolla, Matrix, xB, tC. Obvioulsy we have no info on its numbers yet, but if they can squeeze more ponies out of this while getting higher mpg and great emissions, everyone else is in a lot of trouble.

This one will showcase the new 2.7L 4cyl. Well, Toyota started the Crossover. RX/Harrier. Then all companies put an "X" in there crossover's name. The 3.5 will probably be faster than all other CUV's out there. I have a CX-7 turbo and a Rav 4 V6 I drove is much faster, it is the fastest small SUV out there, faster than X3, LR2.

After the new Highlander came out, I thought Toyota's were gonna start looking horrendous. I think the Venza is a pretty good styling job. The only aspect I don't like are somewhat the headlights and the grille, looks too big and chromed up. Otherwise it's nicely proportioned, i like the sloping D-pillar and the rear quarter window treatment. the rear end looks quite unique with the swing up tailights and there are some aggressive styling cues like the bulging rear fenders, and the interior is a major improvement after the hideous current Camry. The wheels are also pretty nice for a crossover. Obviously it's not as nice looking as a Ferrari, which alot of you seem to be comparing it to. But for it's class it looks pretty good and should compete well with the likes of the Ford Edge, Mazda CX-9(best looking crossover out there), etc.

I dont know if your post was a rhetorical question, because the answer is quite simple. The power of three.

Three vehicles in three sizes.

Corolla, Camry, Avalon
RAV4, Venza, Highlander
FJ, 4Runner, Sequoia.

now I know there are other vehicles on the high and low, and slotted all around. But this small, medium, large concept is the meat of the lineup, and it seems to be the prevailing thought in adding the Venza.

You forgot the Land Cruiser, which is far and away Toyota's SUV, and is essentially the same size as the Sequoia. I think they should make a cheaper trim of the LC and dump the Sequoia, because the Tundra front end is hideous on that car. Yes, I've seen it in person.

1970toyotamarc1970toyotamarc - 1/15/2008 6:16:34 PM
+2 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
I didnt forget it. I think I made it clear that the list is not exhaustive. I also left off the Yaris. (Mostly because little details always ruin the best theories.)
Point is, a full line-up today seems to need a car, CUV and SUV at each of these small, medium and large points. That Toyota also offers the amazing Land Cruiser (which, again, I am shocked to hear you like, btw) is really a tiny detail. There is no practical need for it in their line-up at all, but since it will continue to be made for overseas markets, I just presume that Toyota offers it here for the select few who would be absolutley furious/devastated to see this legend die. They dont really intend to sell many (hence the price), Sequoia has, for all intents and purposes, got the top end of the SUV market covered.
