2008 Detroit Auto Show: Lexus Unveils A Jaw Dropping LF-A Roadster Concept!
The engineers and designers at Lexus continue to use their groundbreaking LF-A premium sports car concept as a medium for expressing their ideas about what a high-performance sporting vehicle not only can be, but should be. In this latest expression of the LF-A, they have removed the car's top to create a high-performance roadster. The LF-A Roadster is based on the sturdy yet lightweight carbon-fiber and aluminum body used for the LF-A coupe, which helps maintain the structure's strength and rigidity even without a top.

Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster is powered by a high-revving V10 engine that approaches 5.0 liters in displacement. The V10, capable of more than 500 horsepower and test-track speeds greater than 200 mph, is mounted in front of the passenger compartment but behind the front-axle centerline in what the LF-A's engineers refer to as a "front-mid" configuration.

The engine is connected via a torque tube and propeller shaft to a transaxle that is controlled by paddle shifters. The torque tube is a structural member that adds rigidity to the drivetrain and chassis while also reducing vibration. Styling is rooted in the Lexus L-Finesse design philosophy, conferring the LF-A Roadster's front end with a compact, low-profile, aerodynamic shape. Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster stands just 48 inches tall, but the Roadster configuration adds a speed adaptive rear wing.

The rear is marked by a pair of wrap-around, arrowhead-shaped taillights that bracket a pair of large grilles. These grilles vent the heated air from the car's two rear-mounted radiators into the LF-A Roadster's aerodynamic wake. The radiators are fed cool air by two large intake ducts mounted just above the rear wheel wells. This aft radiator positioning not only allowed the designers to keep the car's front profile low and tight but also aided the LF-A's chassis engineers in their search for optimal weight distribution.

Helping to provide balance and scale to the design, which features an overall length of 175.6 inches and a wheelbase of 102.6 inches, are high-performance tires on turbine-styled alloy wheels. The front tires are 265/35R20s, while the rears are 305/30R20s. Like the LF-A coupe, the brakes consist of 14.2-inch cross-drilled, vented discs up front, and 13.6-inch cross- drilled, vented discs at the rear. The front brake calipers are six-piston units and the rear calipers use four pistons each.

An "F" logo, located on each front fender of the Roadster, indicates the vehicle's status as a part of the new "F" marque. The name is derived from the original "F" designation for the first Lexus LS prototype. That vehicle was internally coded "Circle-F," with the "F" standing for "flagship." The Circle-F designation further evolved into the code name Flagship One, or F1, and the first F1 concept developed into Lexus' first vehicle, the LS. Since then, the "F" code has come to signify a special vehicle program within Lexus that falls outside the normal engineering and development process. In addition, Fuji Speedway is the IS F's home circuit, and the shape of the F-logo was inspired by many of the track's turns. The all-new Lexus IS F sport sedan is the first production vehicle to carry the F marque.

1. "i would rather eat shards of glass, than have to look at this car."

thats a little harsh, isn't it?

2. "the coupe is like a second SC."

personally, i wont be suprised if this repaleces the SC.

3. "Goodbye lexus, hello Hyundai."

the term "hyundai is the new lexus" does not apply to the geniesis coupe... yet. but thats besides the point.

Agent75 and Rosko, you guys are an embarrasement to free speech. I'm the farthest thing from a Lexus fan and you would practically have to give me one for me to ever drive one again but this car is attractive. If you have a hate for the brand then stay off the site or any of the postings. Were you guys former Lexus employees who were fired? Did you submit designs that were rejected? Whay all the hostility? It's enought to say you don't like it or wouldn't buy it. Just a thought. .. And now back to our previous program that's already in session...lol

Nothing special. Beyond that will they ever build another LExus Coupe? We've been waiting on the LFA for like 3 years now. Im tired of looking at pics of it on the nurburgring every two days. Build the sucker or let it go.

Yeah build it already - i think they can't decide if they should call it an "F" or "f" who give a "FK" - It seems like the Lexus designers are "F"ull of themselves if they keep delaying this car... they should have buiult this on the cheap side and called it a Celica - the front end looks like a modern celica.

I agree. I started feeling that way about the GTR as well. I understand that it takes time to plan/build, but why put a concept out that you know will be a sure thing and then sit on it for several years.

I'm not a huge fan of Chrysler stuff, but their cars follow the concepts rather quickly.

It is a very unique and very Japanese design. And yet it is still a very elegant and extremely sporty-looking roadster. It is a winner for the brand, proof that they can make cars look cool when they put effort into it.

very unique design, japaneese in it's essence, much like the Furai concept, i like that, and i really respect that Lexus has not tried to design it like every other supercar, and followed their own philosophy. Overall the car looks gracious and quite beautiful actually, not a brute at all. Although we know it has bullish strength with that 500 hp engine underneath. An exotic product indeed, because it is distinct and stands upright on its own.

Okay, I know i've harped on the IS-F in the past for it's ricer extensions, but Lexus has done a really good job with this. Supercar looks, combined with cleaner less "in your face" styling. The red also makes the lines pop just right. I think they did a very good job with the design of this one.

43LE, I was banned before for calling EL34 a douche. What is funny is that in my email correspondence with Agent001, he cited the reason for me being banned was his frustration with hearing the word "douch" [being applied to EL34]; it is almost as if Agent001 reads all of EL34 posts and the posts of those who respond to them for a reason (wink, wink). I wouldn't put it beneath them..

This post will be removed in T-10, 9, 8, 7... (just like yours was but don't worry, I read it)

S4, my bro's girlfriend's father's Audi dealership just received that R8 I believe. I'll keep you posted as soon as I get some details! Even though the R8 is almost as perfect as it gets when it comes to supercars (in my opinion) it really IS hard to decide when you can see such potential in the LF-A concept, which has yet to be revealed as a production car.

It is quite peculiar how a Lexus can always bring out the worst of people's personalities. Lexus is the alcoholic beverage of choice for the immature here. It is increasingly apparent that the more Lexus does right, the less logical and intelligent these people act.
