“This year, Kia Motors will likely post profits,’’ Chief Executive and President Chung Eui-sun told reporters at the launch of the Mohave, which will be sold overseas under the name “Borrego” from June.

Equipped with a 3-liter engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission, the Mohave has a price tag of between $35,000 and $47,000 here in South Korea. Kia Motors invested 230 billion won ($245 million) to develop the premium SUV over the past 29 months.

Kia Motors said that it aims to sell 48,000 units of Mohave this year ? 18,000 at home and 30,000 overseas. “We plan to raise the sales to 80,000 in 2009, including 20,000 in South Korea and 60,000 abroad,” it said in a statement.

Kia Motors, which is building a plant in Georgia, the United States, plans this year to introduce three new vehicles ? including the Mohave and two facelift models such as the Cerato sedan.
