2008 NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: 2009 Maxima Details Finally Arive!
The 2009 Nissan Maxima, which makes its world debut at the 2008 New York International Auto Show, marks the seventh generation of Nissan's flagship sedan. Designed as a commanding four-door sports car, Maxima is unique in both appearance and driving feel, with renewed relevance for today's active and ambitious sedan buyers. The all-new 2009 Maxima will be offered as two well-equipped models, Maxima 3.5 S and Maxima 3.5 SV, and is scheduled to arrive at Nissan dealers nationwide in early summer 2008.

High targets were established for the development of the new Maxima, including the goal of creating "the best performing front engine, front-wheel drive car in the world," along with the goals of class-leading acceleration, braking, handling, craftsmanship and cockpit design.

The breakthrough exterior design of the new Maxima imparts a feeling of "liquid motion," which combines an aggressive stance and powerful fender design – not unlike many exotic sports cars on the market today. Maxima's new stance comes, in part, from a slight reduction in wheelbase and overall length, along with a wider front and rear track.

The new Maxima's interior design team developed an interior concept of "Super Cockpit" – imparting the feeling of sports car with controls ergonomically close, yet with ample roominess and comfort for both driver and passengers. The interior includes a special driver's sport seat, available leather-appointed seating, offset shifter lever that is closer to the driver, "Daylight Illumination" gauges and a wide range of available technology, including a premium audio system, RearView Monitor and Nissan Hard Drive Navigation system with XM NavTraffic real-time traffic information (active XM® subscription required, sold separately), Voice Recognition and 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive.

The new Maxima offers a more powerful engine, quicker acceleration response and a performance-oriented tuned exhaust note. The 2009 Maxima again features a standard award-winning 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve VQ-series V6 engine, enhanced and refined to take driving performance to new levels. The revised engine is now rated at 290 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque (estimated), increases of 35 horsepower and 9 lb-ft of torque over the 2008 Maxima engine. All 2009 Maximas come equipped with a revised standard Xtronic CVT™ with manual mode, tuned specifically for Maxima's sporty driving character, and available paddle shifters. A new "Ds mode" (drive sport) is added to the CVT for 2009.

Highlights of the 2009 Nissan Maxima include:

Blah...FWD is boring for this kind of car. The HP should have hit the 300 mark. RWD/AWD should have been the two options. For this money I would go get a 300hp G that weighs less and has RWD or AWD as an option. Granted it would be a base model, but still you would get the options you wanted.

Also I am tired of CVT. I never liked them, I like my gears.

I think the reason why they keep the Maxima as a FWD is because it would cannibalize on G35 sales if they turn it into a RWD or AWD. I agree with you on the CVT, though.

The maxima and G35 are like night and day size-wise. I doubt there will be cross shopping. The G is a small sedan and the max is pretty big. I owned both.

I own a 93 stick-shift and an 01 (20th Anniversary) automatic Maxima and of course the 93 is the most fun to drive. Until Nissan desides that a manual tranny is what the Maxima needs this wont be a true 4DSC. Dont get me wrong, I think that this car will get very close to being it (finally). Good job Nissan.

0to60: I've also owned both the Maxima (02) and a G35 (07). Remember one thing, though: the Maxima is Nissan's flagship, and the G35 is Infiniti's entry-level model. Some people (like myself) have opted to cross over from Nissan to Infiniti. Nissan knows this. If they build a Maxima that's mechanically close or identical to the G35, then why spend more money just for an Infiniti badge on the grill?

G35J, you're absolutely right.

It's the same reason why they don't put quattro AWD and a 4.2L V8 in the Volkswagen Passat.

07G35J I still disagree. I wouldnt cross shop the 2. If I had a family I would opt for the max for the room. Also if I were taller, I wouldnt be able to fit comfortably in the max. The Altima comes with the same engine as the G. Is there cross shopping? If it were rear wheel drive, I still wouldnt cross shop. Although my Infiniti is made by Nissan, its still an infiniti and to me there is a difference. The max and the G are around the same price. The Max is better on Gas. The G sucks on gas. My choices when I got the 07 G were the 3 series, TL, and A4. When I got my max, I didnt look at any of the luxury brands becasuse they didnt offer the space I needed at the time. I put the maxima more with cars like the Avalon and ES300. Roomy sedans. Although the Max does have a sporty side, it is in a completely different class than the G. It would have taken away from the Infiniti I.

No. You're pathetic for putting the 335 and the Maxima in the same sentence together. Only a true fanboy would try to make that comparison. The rest of the world isn't as disillusioned as the fanboys.

You were de-boosted because the 335i and the Maxima are targeting the same market. If you are seriously considering a 335i, then why wouldn't you look at the G35, IS350, CTS, etc.? Nothing front wheel drive should be on the list.

bob, then by your thinking, a Crown Vic would be on there because it's RWD.

I see they stuck with a CVT. What does that feels like with 290hp? Anyone know?

There is no vehicle available with this much power and CVT, so how would any of us know?

Certainly a marked improvement over the Quasimodo-Mobile version it replaces, but those headlight assemblies are painfully over-styled, and it still has a rather (disproportionately) large rear end.

Right, but they say it's a better CVT. We'll see about that. Bring back the stick-shift.

Looks good. Love the headlights and interior. For the most part this is Nissan's take on the Toyota Avalon. But way more sport.

NO.

The G35 is far and away a better car.

But if you had an Avalon, 300, or even an Altima, I would say yes.

I'm sure most people wont cross shop with a G35, but I was putting it out there for more comparison than anything. I'm not sure why Nissan is so stuck to their guns about CVTs. Especially as stated by Xdrive, 4DSC w/ 290hp FWD and a CVT. Those together just don't match up in my head.

Hahaha, although, to be fair, leather as a "premium" option is way more popular in the US than outside the US. There are plenty of "premium" vehicles around the world without leather seats.

I think it looks like a Volvo...the wide rectangular grill. If you put the Volvo's headlights on this thing, it would be hard to tell the difference at a quick glance.

Will they do another Infiniti I 35? Lexus does an ES350 (FWD) and and IS350 (RWD) both with pretty good sales. There may be room in the Infiniti line up for a larger FWD sedan.
Im disappointed in the CVT though. I just can't make myself like the transmission.

I clicked this link only in hopes to find the next-generation Maxima equipped with a Renault-Nissan, V-6 diesel that has been promised for America in the upcoming Maxima. I guess this is the platform we'll see the fuel-efficient, high-performing, biodiesel-compatible Maxima, but maybe we'll have to wait until model year '10 or '11.
