2008 NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: Who Did The Better Job, The New Maxima Or The New TSX?

With the holiday weekend approaching, Agent 001 is still hard at work at 2008 New York Auto Show giving you all of the shots and scoops.  With that in mind I took some time to scan through the latest galleries and look at two of the newest entries in the midsize market, the Nissan Maxima and the Acura TSX,.

While  I have to say they really stand out, they do it in two differnet ways, one bold brash while the other is clean and neat.  I can't decide on which I like better, so I am asking you to help and tell us what you think.  Who did the better job here? Keep in mind the market and competition when you make your comments.

See both of them all live in our 2008 New York Auto Show photo gallery...

Check Out The 2008 New York Auto Show Gallery

Bold and sleek, but is the new Maxima too much like the Altima?

With the conservative line there is no doubt the Acura will keep the loyal happy.  But is it enough to sway new buyers?

Keep checking back over the next few days update the gallery with the latest new photos…

New Maxima reminds me of thick juicy rib eye steak while the new TSX reminds me of lean venison meat LOL.

IMO, Maxima's will definetely be a looker and looks almost intimdating due to muscles bulging out but TSX's wicked curve is jagged and wild in angles to amuse onlookers. I believe the Acura's engine would probably be more silky and refined but Nissan's will have more power and brute with its legendary VQ engine family gene.

I would agree about TSX engine being more refine than Maximas V6 if Maxima V6 was a Chevy pushrod. But it's not. People need to stop knocking the VQ without first experiencing it. When the press say the VQ is thrashy, that's because they were comparing it to the best 6vyl out there(Toyota V6/inline 6, BMW inline 6). VQ is every bit as smooth as any 6cyl from AUDI/VW and noticeably smoother than any MERCEDES or GM/FORD/CHRYSLER/HYUNDAI/KIA/SUZUKI/mAZDA 6cyl.

Mazda doesnt have a 6 cylinder. They borrow Ford's. That's really the only big component sharing going on between the too.

And I love the way the VQ behaves in the G35. The power seems effortless and uninhibited, like a raging waterfall off a 100 foot cliff.

Mazda have 6cyls. They even have A 1.8liter 6Cyl used in the MX3 in the early 90s. They have 2 different 6cyls used in the millenia.

I love how you admit it has thrash (and that toy and BMW engines are better), but try to overlook it, because you're a fanboy. Spin it all you want, thrash is thrash, noise is noise, coarseness is coarseness. Face it, the VQ can NOT match the smoothness, efficiency, or refinement of competing V6's.

"VQ is every bit as smooth as any 6cyl.....and noticeably smoother than any MERCEDES...."
OK, now I know you're talking out your rear; I dont even LIKE m-b, but Ive driven a new c350 back to back against a new g35 with a family member, and its V6 SHAMES the VQ. The g's coarseness would almost be forgiveable, if it weren't aspiring to be a near-luxury car, but against the competition, it's needs more time in finishing school.

Mazda doesnt currently have an in-house designed V6, join us here in the 21st century. But one can be sure if they ever designed their own, and if it ended up anything like their old 1.8/2.5 and Miller cycle engines, you could add it to the long list of V6's more refined than the VQ.

Actually they do have a v6. Its also the same duratech ford also uses. Mazda designed the engine and ford builds it.

hands down - maxima.
check out both web sites to truly see the cars all angles including good interior shots. the tsx falls in line with all of other goofy front end grill work acura has pasted on their new models.. while maxima has refined and corrected an existing model. - adding a great new front end .. sorry acura - maybe you should take the hint.

It's called a duratech because it's ford's engine. The V6's available in Mazdas here are all ford-based, with some Mazda-specific features, like their VVT system. But as far as a 100% Mazda design, there aren't any at moment, look it up.

I really liked the original TSX/Euro-Accord design, it was clean, uncluttered, and had a taught lean look. The new TSX looks similar to many of Acura's recent effort, where there are too many design themes coming together in a not so successful union.

The Max get my vote on this one..

The Maxima in my opinion is all over the place and why does the front look like a Scion? SEams like Nissan is borrowing other things from Toyota. Looks like Maxima it is ready to make Forbes most disappointing car list again. Interior is nice though but talk about torque steer you guys complain about the Type S TL good luck with this.

The Medieval Shield looks is apparently here to stay with the Acura division. Idiots. What happened to Acura over the past 10 years? Their Legend design was a sharp car & now they have come to this. LMAO. They have to have some of the most uninspirational and unappealing cars in the industry.

Since I can only choose between the two of them, then I have to go with the Maxima. For the record, I do not like either design. The Acura is just plain awful..

Both are ugly and uninspiring, but I'll give interior design to TSX while I give interior material to Maxima, it's thicker, TSX material looks better but feels thinner and flimsier.

Yes I can tell all this just by looking at pictures.

Yeah, from a purely aesthetic standpoint, I think they both kinda suck. The Maxima needs to lose those weird headlights and the TSX needs to lose that awful grill. I'm calling draw and two bad attempts at FMC's.

Maxima.
The new design scheme of Nissan/Infiniti makes a much better statement than the new design scheme of Honda/Acura. With Acura, that front grill on all their cars needs to go!
The new Maxima really separates itself from the Altima, as far as styling, features, and luxury. In the last generation they were really close, and I think that's why a lot of people weren't huge fans of the Maxima.

I've looked at the photos a few times and some others. I like the rear end of the TSX but the rest of the car looks bloated. The original TSX had a crisper cleaner design. The opposite is true of the Maxima. This new car looks better then the previous Maxima and in my book better then the TSX inside and out overall.

The new TSX looks alright, but the current generation TSX has cleaner lines, thus looks better, specially in black.

As for the new Maxima, wow!, this is a nice looking car.

Nissan did an excellent job in designing both the exterior and interior. I read somewhere that Nissan reined in torque steer as much as possible in the new model. Let's see what all the upcoming reviews have to say on this issue.

The question is .. which one would you select from the following Japanese mid/full size sedan offering:

Toyota Camry SE/XLE V6
Honda Accord EX-L V6
Toyta Avalon XLE V6
Nissan Maxima SE/SL V6

I would get the Maxima. Even though, the Accord would be more fun to drive, I would still get Maxima considering its looks and the over all package. Besides, this Maxima would still be sporty enough for a front wheel drive car.

Maxima is growing on me, hopefully the headlights will too. The TSX looks like its playing it way too safe, rendering it not offensive, but not exciting either.

Nissan knows what it needs to do to stay alive: take risks. The FX was a big risk, and some people LOVE it, others absolutely HATE it - and that's the reaction I think they're looking for. When you please everyone you go mainstream and that's just boring!

I think the more appropriate question is which is less ugly as they are both non appealing . The less uglier being the bloated GTR front of the new maxima. At least nissan was smart enough to give it some gtr styling cues . The Tsx is having some sort of an identity crisis and needs some serious attention. All those shapes in the front remind me of the pacman face.

Both cars are great vehicles. However, the TSX gets my vote. I feel that the Maxima has been dramaticaly overstyled, and does not follow the brand's design scheme.

The TSX made quite an evolutionary change - somewhat like the Infiniti G35. The TSX still contains its conservative lines, but invisions a more rugged sporty look. Anyone who sees the TSX driving on the road will most likley think that is is a 50k car.

Don't mean to be rude but the new TSX is uninspiring! I can't describe how little this car does to make someone want to buy it over the competition. And yes, acura lovers will dive in the shallow end head first just because. But this car is combination of the ugliest Q45 ever and some other design theme that Infiniti hasn't finished yet. Even moreso, this design makes me question the design of the FX50. The FX50 looks "good" as a stand alone. However, when you see the design cues cross over from the FX to the TSX you have to say I don't want that POS to resemble my truck!! No nees to add on to the negative commetns but the more i look at the new TSX it seems like the styling cues come from the Mitsu Evo and other randome makes!

Between these two, I'd pick the Maxima, although...does the front of it remind anyone else of a Volvo? Not that that's bad, just sayin'.

The Acura is a cold mess. The front "grill" is pretty much universally despised (except by Acura executives, apparently), the rest of the design details are OK, but the basic proportions are off, so who cares about the details when the foundation looks so bloated.

Seriously, Acura, you need to kick your current design team to the curb, put all of those "shield" grills on eBay, and get yourself a new design team. ANY new design team. It doesn't matter, they MUST be better.
