2008 New York Auto Show: The 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe, Now Is This A Stud Or Dud?
Drawing inspiration from classic sports cars, the 2009 Pontiac Solstice coupe was created for drivers who appreciate both dramatic styling and balanced performance. Unveiled at the New York Auto Show as a GXP model, the Solstice coupe builds on the success of the convertible model while offering a greater range of all-season driving opportunities.

For drivers still wanting an open-air experience, the coupe also features a removable roof panel, fully opening the cockpit to all of the sensations of the road.

“Today’s Solstice is the top-selling roadster in the U.S., and we believe this new model has even broader appeal,” said Jim Bunnell, Buick-Pontiac-GMC general manager. “The coupe has all the design cues and pleasing performance of the original roadster, and is an all-season alternative for people who enjoy open-air driving.”

The coupe is expected to arrive in Pontiac dealerships in early 2009.

The making of a coupe

The new coupe was inspired by the Solstice coupe concept shown at the North American International Auto Show in 2002. True to the concept, it is a modern sports car with classic lines. The roofline has a “fastback” shape with stylized “rails” that run from the front of the roof to the rear, culminating in a stylish and functional ducktail-style rear spoiler.

The coupe’s roof is fixed aft of the B-pillars, with side windows and a rear liftglass for access to the cargo area. The roof panel is easily removed from the passenger compartment, and an optional soft roof cover stores in the cargo area. A home storage case for the roof panel will be offered through GM Accessories.

Engineering the design

Despite its dramatic new look, engineers made only minor structural changes to create the Solstice coupe. The rear fenders and rear fascia are the same as those on the convertible. New taillight assemblies flow more smoothly into the tapered roofline.

“The Solstice coupe represents a major collaboration of design and engineering,” said Bruce Kosbab, chief engineer. “The sleek lines of the new roof give the car a fresh appearance, yet only minimal changes were made to the body structure – it’s a great example of building on an already solid foundation.”

Lightweight structure

The roof’s structure was strengthened with additional support elements, including an aluminum roof bow attached with aluminum brackets. The bow and brackets are stiff, yet low in mass, a design feature that pervades the coupe’s overall construction. The roof includes a lightweight sheet molding compound cover affixed to a rigid aluminum frame for additional lightweight support. A lightweight magnesium roof panel frame weighs just 31 pounds (14.2 kg) and can be removed by one person. The cover is also made of sheet molding compound.

Powertrain and suspension

Because the change to a coupe body style resulted in only a slight increase in curb weight, no drivetrain or suspension changes were necessary to shift from the convertible body structure. Initial tests have shown that the Solstice coupe will deliver ride and handling, acceleration, braking and fuel economy comparable to the convertible model.

The coupe is powered by a standard 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder engine that generates 173 horsepower (129 kW), while the GXP version is equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged Ecotec engine with 260 horsepower (194 kW).

Interior additions

Much of the coupe’s interior remains the same as that of the convertible. However, the area behind the seats was redesigned for easy access to the cargo area, and a storage tray was mounted directly behind the headrests.

Removing the folding-top mechanism made way for a new, flat cargo floor and several storage compartments. The cargo area’s covered bins provide secure storage for smaller items. Cargo tie-down hooks help secure irregularly shaped items.

@ ToyotaPower,

Funny that you would say that -- I was thinking when the hell is Toyota going make a "Porsche wannabe", too.
The LF-A has been promised for the past 4 years. Now comes word that they will probably bring back the Celica and Supra. Gee, I wonder how long we'll have to wait for those as well?

tyee2005, I too prefer GM over Toyota as a company but GM does not always get it right. The Solstice looks great but is too tiny to be practical. I even have trouble getting in and out of it.

True, I'd think the Saturn Sky would be its main competitor (along with the Miata).

Well the GXP version should have a high enough power:weight ratio to hang w/ the 350Z in performance (the GXP should weigh like 600-700 lbs less and only be down about 40 hp).

BTW this will sell really well for being only a 2 seater.

+3 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
why wouldnt it be, the 350z isnt the best sports car in the world, its handling is just ok, it weights alot more than it should, unrefined, and cheap interior add all that together and it really doesnt sound great at all. im sure they could produce competition for the Z. i think this version looks better than the convertible variant, and more aggressive

I can't remember which magazine, but they tracked a 350Z along with a Solstice GXP and they were neck and neck.

Any manufacturer should be congratulated for trying to being creative. Constraints by legislation, in ways many people don't realise, severely curtail the modern automotive designers. It is almost impossible to design a car that doesn't have similarities to others, past or present.

Stud!

I think it looks way better than the convertible which I do not like. Sort of like how the Z4 coupe came out after the Z4 drop-top & looked better.

Let's hope Saturn releases a coupe version of their Sky which is on the same platform, & is Saturn's version of the Solstice (For all of you under that rock).

IMO the car looks beautifull, from interior to exterior. im not really in to power, id rather have a car that looks good and goes slow, because face it, i have never went to a track, the only place i drive on is publc roads where that power is enough for you to rip apart any civic.

The only downside i see on this car is that is build with gm quality aka nothing lines up right, crappy build products etc, and correct me if im wrong, but wasnt the solstice the worst quality/realabitiy car voted on or something along those lines?

Perhaps you should look at a recent GM product. I doubt you will have any complaints about panel gaps or finish quality of the GMT900 trucks/SUVs, Chevy Malibu, Lambda crossover, or new CTS.

As far as a Solstice not being reliable well I guess that would be a little true. It is a cheap performance car that was rushed through development. There have been problems w/ the tops, add in the horrific trunk design and the car has quite a few problems. But that doesn't mean it is unreliable the 2.4 or 2.0T engines are darn near bullet proof. The Ecotec based 4 cylinders are dead nuts reliable.

Mega-stud...this is just great looking. It reminds me of a TVR too (in terms of looks). I've never driven or even sat in a Solstice, so I don't know how it drives or feels, but it looks WAY better than a 350Z.

The car's design is simply awesome, but when i sat inside, the quality of interior materials seemed somewhat flimsy, but it's understandable, i guess they were trying to shed some weight. And the bumper panels are painted plastic as well. Look this car really does have a touch of classic sport car design with a larger front overhang and a small rear, and it does look fantastically compact and sporty in person, but i just can't live with the plastics. Please don't get me wrong, i love the car, but don't like the great use of plastic. And i believe even the rear window panel is also plastic. But it's good to see that they are using turbo charged engines to boost up power from the very meager 170 HP to now about 260 HP. GM is doing all right, they just need to concentrate on the quality a bit.

Stud...definitely. I feel like a kid when I read more about this car!

I wish the Corvette had remained relatively small and shorter in length like it was decades ago. I like how far the Corvette (and brand) has come, but I like the small roadster look, feel, and excitement. And to think, an LSx V8 engine can fit in that little engine-bay as demostrated by Mallet (sp?).

I like that the Solstice has that 260hp/260lb-ft torque DI engine. I wonder how much power/torque can be added with a turbocharged version of the same DI engine?

The 260 hp 2.0 is a turbocharged DI engine. The 2.4 is a 170 hp NA 4 cylinder.

I like it, however the lights in the back are a little busy for a car this small...IMO.

Also...FYI pontiac, not every car has to have chrome wheels. This car would look much better with muted rims.
