2008 Nissan GT-R to use 'VR' designated 3.8-litre engine
The latest news suggests that the new GT-R's engine will not be based on the VQ series currently being used by the 350Z and Murano. Instead it is designated VR and possibly shares similarities with the VRH35L engine from Nissan's Le Mans contender, the R390 GT1. Read Article

the name will sell the vehicle not the car. and at more than $75k, i'd opt for more than a Nissan, no matter the heritage/badging it carries.

In Europe, we call this car "Godzilla" because it is ugly as hell but destroys just about anything on a track.

So this new GT-R is supposed to be heavy and upmarket? I don't like that idea frankly. It may be a competitor to Ferrari and Porsche performance-wise but everywhere else the Skyline is flawed.

Maybe the R35 will be different but to me a lot of the GT-R soul will be lost. And considering it is one of the few cars with a soul that ever came out of Japan it's a true shame.

Till today i didn't understood the term "Soul of a car"
and how to know whether one has a soul or not.

hahahahaha.... That was absolutely brilliant, GS300.

But, what some really mean about a car having a "soul" is that they want a car that has steering feedback and an eagerness to rip into corners with raw aggression and gusto.

If these clowns don't think that the GT-R will do that because they have "a feeling", then I am sure that they could join John Edwards on "Crossing Over" and do a part with him on their paranormal experiences.

What a shame. Maybe if you look in the history of all the great brands from today (Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Bentley, ... basically anything European/American) you might understand it a bit better.

WTF? Sleeptime, kid.

I own both BMW and INFINITI. No doubt BMW drives better, but I'd say it's the INIFINITI who's got a soul and personality. BMW, other than M3, always feels like a perfectly tuned(for common people) tool, without much excitement/surprise.

I think more people are just worried that Nissan might, just might, get this legendary Japanese sports car right.

Keep in mind that the GT-R is no new vehicle, it's been around for ages, and the concept for this design debuted back in 2005 I believe.

And, I still absoluetly LOVE the car's design. Ladies and Gentlemen, this design is TIMELESS! A 95 Skyline STILL looks good to me to this day.

The engine in the r390 gt1 is a 3.5 liter v8 tt, and it was based off an older design. I doubt the engine from the new gtr would be based on that engine.

No Porsche has "average" performance (well, except the Cayenne)... numbers aren't everything. It's the handling. But the C4S still accelerates from 0-60 in a tidy 4.3 seconds.

S4, that is what I was saying.

The C4S is an amazing car which is why I mentioned the whole, "are you joking?" type-deal.

I can feel apathy from uninformed bloggers, and fear from anti japanese cars bloggers who know about the legendary GTR's performance, from their comments. The previous skylines were just road going missiles, and was the first production vehicle to cross the nurburgring under 8 minutes. And as we have seen from many spy videos, this GTR is being engineered to equal the best sports car on the planet(i am not saying the fastest but the best) Porsche 911 turbo. This car will be a genuine competitor to the M3, Audi S5, and Merc C63 amg, and Lexus ISF. While the M3 is tremendously fun to drive, i think C63's brutal power may make it the fastest of the lot, but the 911 turbo can just engulf any car from this bunch, and seriously even the M3 doesn't stand a chance. If the GTR turns out to be even close to being as good as a 911 turbo, then i see no point in why Nissan can't get back to the creed that it had build among true car enthusiasts, not just some shallow brand phile (there are lots of them in this site, BMW lovers, and Lexus fan boys dominate the group).

Well said.

One thing I cant get over are those who attack the design of the GTR. How can you consider the Audi R8 to be attractive if you dont think the same about the GTR?

Which Skyline did Nurburgring under 8 min? R34?

Woah, M35, that's a little too far. The R8 is rolling art. The GT-R is not supposed to be beautiful- function over form.

That's subjective, S4. To me, both cars have similar styling appeal. The both look like their still 'concepts' even in their near-production form.

However, I assume the Audi will place a great deal of importance on the interior while the Nissan will be stictly business, a la Mistu Evolution IX.

HyundaiHyundai - 8/15/2007 3:54:59 PM

I don't know S4. To me, the Skylines have always been beautiful. The new GT-R is even more beautiful. Of course, looks are subjective, which is why you might not see what I see.

The skyline which broke the 8 minutes was a modified skyline, not a stock one.
The 7:54 of the R34 was an incomplete lap.

This car is going to be fantastic from a performance standpoint. The power and fun of a 911 Turbo for the price of a Carrera S.

It's not supposed to be gorgeous, though. I would call it "distinctive."

Being me, I don't only care about performance; a car has to have that "total package." For that, I'd still take an R8, no questions asked. But I'd certainly respect a GT-R driver if he ever tried to drag or play with me on the highway.

S4, you keep on saying that "it is not supposed to be gorgeous..." I think that the GT-R is amazingly gorgeous. You have to approach the car from a different perspective; it all depends on what you are open to.

No a normal skyline broke the 8:00 record, and the 7:54 was set by the v-sper nur.

I have to get one of these babies! Of course badge whores will never understand what the big deal is about this Nissan, because there is so much ignorance and arrogance. That is why most of us will never know what we are missing because so much of our lives is based on perception.
We spend most of our empty miserable and shallow lives worrying about how we are percieved by others e.g the kind of badge our cars have on them!

i think the GTR will sell well, but it would have been beter if it was infiniti GTR here in USA.
people from this web site understand the GTR, but people in show rooms will not get it.
70,000 on an amazing infiniti in understandable but for Nissan, hell no.
