2008 Toyota Yaris Voted Green COTY UK
The Toyota Yaris has been named Green Car of the Year 2008 by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA). The announcement comes ahead of the start of Green Transport Week (14 – 22 June). The ETA developed their annual Green Car Buyer’s Guide after reviewing more than 1300 vehicles currently on sale in the UK. Research for the guide focused on power, emissions, fuel efficiency and even noise levels of the vehicles.

In addition to the Yaris being named the overall winner, three other Toyota models were in the ETA’s top ten with the Prius (3rd), Aygo (6th) and Auris (9th) being identified as some of the greenest vehicles available in the UK.

The Toyota RAV4 was named as the greenest vehicle in the Off Road category and the Toyota Aygo was top in the City category.

The second-generation Toyota Yaris went on sale in 2006 offering improved quality, accommodation, performance and dynamic ability. As well as being the overall winner of the ETA’s Green Car of the Year 2008 it has been named the top green vehicle in the Supermini category.

The Yaris has a strong, dynamic look and is exceptionally aerodynamically efficient with a Cd of 0.30 – among the best in its class – helping fuel economy and reducing noise disturbance when on the move.

Yaris is available in three and five-door body styles with a choice of four engines. With both manual and MultiMode transmissions, the 1.4-litre D-4D 90 can return 62.8mpg in combined cycle driving, with further ownership cost benefits from CO2 emissions of 119g/km, which place the vehicle in band B for Vehicle Excise Duty.

But, but, but ... it's not a hybrid.

That's YARIS, not PRISUX.

Leave it to Toyota to make the worlds greenest cars. Good job, Toyota!

So where are the miracle diesels? Huh? I'd like to hear what the Euro fanboys have to say about this. Those overpriced and unreliable diesels get beat by a simple and efficient Toyota Yaris. What's the morale of the story?

If you want to drive green, go to Toyota (or Lexus) and then Honda.

Huh?

Do you work for their marketing division or something? Everything you say smells like bullshit.

....well, they DO make some of the greenest cars, as does Honda I think. Diesel is useless here as it costs as much if not more than gas unfortunately.

Toyota makes SOME green cars, true, but they also produce a lot of gas-guzzling SUVs that totally destroy their credibility in pursuing a path to preserve the environment as they want to us to believe in their marketing ads.

The moral of the story is that the 1.4-litre D-4D 90 "which can return 62.8mpg in combined cycle driving" is a diesel and the only reason the Yaris was able to win this award.

Well Toyota diesels are some of the best, most refined and cleanest in the business. So there's three fields were Toyota is leading: diesels, hybrids and clean gasoline engines.

Turbospyder,
All the Euro-knobs have diesels too, where are they on the list?
Toyota's gas guzzlers are still cleaner than everyone else's.

The Prius I'm sure is cleaner than the Yaris and larger too, but the Yaris is attainable to more people. The 3rd gen Prius should further close this gap.

So true! Toyota might also make fuel inefficient cars but they're still clean nonetheless and cleaner than that of the competition. I wonder how Toyota does it! Maybe the Germans can learn a thing or two about how to build engines properly from Toyota.

huuey, you can bet that Toyota's diesels (just like Honda's) use Bosch Euro-knob fuel injection systems. And this is just one list. Notice that the Honda Civic hybrid is second on this list http://www.eta.co.uk/car_buyers_guide/ten_best but Autexpress tested it recently and got 38.3 mpg (compared to 74.3 mpg for the VW Polo Bluemotion) and concluded that it's an environmental "gimmick" http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/grouptests/221685/honda_civic.html#

Well they are, the Jaguar XJ 2.7 diesel was the greenest luxury car. The 520d won as did the 320d.

I have to correct myself - the Polo Bluemotion got a tested 54.6 mpg in the AutoExpress test but it's still much better than the 38.2mpg that the Honda Civic Hybrid got (and the Civic hybrid is second on this COTY list).

Turbospyder,
The Prius is 5 sec faster to 0-60 than the Polo diesel, and its about 2x larger than the Polo.
The Prius also gets 60mpg and is cleaner than the Polo's 1.4L hog (I don't see bluemotion listed anywhere on the UK website).
the 1.9TDI Golf is actually over 50% dirtier than the Prius.

There's probably a reason why they're benchmarking the Civic hybrid, it's the only vehicle they can get close to.

Also, do the Germans not make gasoline engines? It seems they offer a lot more petrol engines than diesel ones, so even if they used Bosch parts, overall Toyota's efforts produced better results. Take the diesels out and Toyota would really leave everyone in the dust.

Not according to AutoExpress' test results.

Mini Cooper Clubman D - 57.0mpg (test mileage)
VW Polo Bluemotion - 54.6mpg
Toyota Prius T Spirit - 41.5mpg

Most of the International Engine of the Year winners are German (again) this year.

people that don't like 'em ALWAYS manage to get less than optimal mileage for the prius.

i personally know some 1/2 dozen owners. most report mileage in the high 40s, with occasional tankfuls in the 50 - 55 mpg range.

clarification: MID- to high 40s.

as little as 41 mite be reported by lead footed folks.
