2009 BMW 7-series - Improved Night-Vision
The German website alle-autos-in.de gives us some more information concerning the next-generation 7-series (F01, F02). They talked to Arthur Ruß, responsible for all the camera-assistence-systems at BMW, who has shared some interesting things about the Night-Vision-System in the next 7.

The system will be able to detect humans and to display a flashing warning triangle in the dashboard if any humans should appear in front of the car. The article says that the system will not cause false alerts if there are pedestrians on the sidewalk, but it does not get into details about how that task will be accomplished.

The camera found in the Night-Vision-system will be improved as well, featuring a better resolution and improved object-recognition. The system will warn the driver if he is in danger of a collision with any detected object or human. To test this technique they test drove over 250.000 kilometers at night, so the error margins are pretty slim. That's pretty impressive I would say.

Another interesting fact, although not available for the U.S market right now, is that the new 2009 BMW 7-series will be able to detect and read speed-limit-signs in most European countries. This option will not make it to the US since there are no consistent speed-limit-signs here.

Cadillac was indeed the first.

Actually I believe Lexus already had this planned for the 1989 LS400 but it wasn't quite ready yet. Imagine if it was. The LS400 would have totally embarrassed the competition more than it already did.

Michael Taylor,

Lexus has yet to offer a comprehesive and relavant night vision system. They can take a few classes from the Americans and the Germans on this one. Ouch.

Lexus spent millions on a worthless self-parking system and Lexus doesn't even advertise the POS any longer.

lol

BMW developed an entirely new technology for night vision using Far Infra Red (FIR) as opposed to the GM product which uses Near Infra Red (NIR). The Seven Series was the first car to use the more advanced FIR.

idiots... cadillac introduced the most rudimentary system years qgo that was almost instantly eclipsed by Merc and BMW.

this is another level of innovation. one that caddy cannot in 100 years hope to emulate. dont worry, they are still working on redcuing their panel gaps from 3-4 inches

...and yet Cadillac consistently places MUCH higher every year in overall quality. Should I mention how many years before BMW, that Cadillac implemented LED taillights, you clown?

just a little inside fact, everyone on this board considers you to be the biggest idiot.

No, really.

Bimmer,

I believe it was first implemented on the Cadillac Catera. Funny how its predecessor the CTS did not have LED tail lights.

No. BMW is known for making sports luxury sedans but they're not really as innovative as Mercedes or Lexus.

Michael Taylor. Im only going to agree 1/2 way with you on that one. Historically speaking, that is. BMW today is one of the most innovative companies, although it hasnt always been the case.

Did you know that lexus just copied BMW's brilliant Active Steering (which came out four years ago BTW) with a much weaker variable ratio steering system. Par for the course, BMW innovates and toylex copies.

Can't we discuss frickin night vision stuff without it turning into another debate????????

I think this kind of stuff is cool as hell, regardless about who makes it or who offered it first.

Yeah Lexus could have realllly blown everyone's mind by actually inventing the car back in the 1700's, but they weren't even around yet. But they coulda done it. Then what would everyone have to say! And, and, and, oh wait...yeah, they could have invented the airplane.....300 years ago.....oooooooh...that would have shown all you other pansies that like bmw's and MB's......er uh I mean all you Cessna fans....you guys would have been reallllly embarrased!!!!!

Wow, wasn't looking to start a war, but apparently I hit some switches. What BMW is creating is pretty good evolution of the current systems available.

It has nothing to do with who is driving the car, at nighttime there are plenty of roads that you could implement this technology on, even highways. Especially where I live and in upstate areas here in NE where deer and other animals are a big problem, not just humans.

I was simply pointing a fact that in the US market, Caddy first had the item in a production vehicle. Not that Lexus was working on one, or that the JDM Honda has had it. I was purely looking at the US market.

Like all other things I am still amazed more cars do not have LED taillamps, they are brighter, faster, and more reliable. You had them on the last part of the Accord refresh, yet the new Accord drops them? Seems like a step backwards. The BMW convertible from a few years ago had them, but now they don't? Hybrids have them like the Camry and Highlander, but their gas counterparts don't? I realize they use less power so why not put them in a hybrid, but why not just make them across the board? Another topic for another time I guess.

The previous BMW 3-Series model had LED tail Lamps as part of its Mid-Life Facelift

The New Model BMW 3 has LED Tubes as tail Lights with conventional Bulbs behind the LED Tubes for Brake Lights.

I am sure they will have LEDs behind the Tubes after its Mid-Life Facelift
