2009 CTS- V Blisters Nurburgring

In testing today at Germany’s Nurburgring, Cadillac’s upcoming new 2009 CTS- V completed a lap of the legendary Nordschleife in 7:59.32. This blistering time appears to be the fastest ever publicly documented for a production sedan.

Cadillac is nearing the completion of testing for the highly anticipated CTS- V , the limited-edition high-performance model based on the award-winning CTS sport sedan. John Heinricy, executive with GM Performance Division and an acclaimed racing driver, piloted the CTS- V through its sub-8 minute lap. The car itself had no performance modifications outside of those planned for consumer production, which is scheduled to begin this fall.

Estimated at 550 horsepower, the CTS- V is at the moment going through the final stages of intensive testing and development. One of the realistic objectives of the Cadillac team is to make the CTS- V the world’s fastest production sedan, as a part of the overall goal to make the V -Series Cadillac’s ultimate expression of performance and technology. More updates will be released in the coming weeks as testing is finalized, including the car’s certified SAE power ratings, acceleration specifications and U.S.-market pricing.

that's funny. i thought the cts had one of the best looking interiors in its class...whichever class you compare it to - compact OR midsize.

though many are holding their breath waiting for gm to lose the pushrod engine, it continues to deliver power, efficiency, and dependability.

as for the american workers...theyre probably just following the lead of the managers.

why do we blast the laborers for being lazy but not management. seems a bit harsh.

i think it looks very nice, interior is pleasing and well put together.
but are you sure its actually made here in america, not in canada or mexico? i hope its made here, since so many gm and ford's are made in canada and mex.

p.s. i dont like the cts-v coupe. just the sedan.

I hate to admit it, but uncountable numbers of very major and preeminent politicians, physicist, astronomers, chemists, geneticist, engineer, banker, writer, philosopher who are recognized as Americans were actually born in Germany and became American converts. I mean if you have any idea of science and inventions, almost all of the major inventions in the fields have been made by either Germans/Eastern Europeans who migrated to US, or American of German/Eastern European Descent. I can list, hundreds of such personalities, but following are some of them: Dankmar Adler, Felix Adler, Josef Albers, Hannah Arendt, Walter Baade, Das Bauhaus, Emile Berliner, Albert Einstein, Henry Kissinger, Hans Albrecht Bethe and many others.

You see America has money and it buys foreign brainpower(indirectly, by giving them a physically and economically secured life, and i am certainly not saying that is a bad thing, but rather that is what America is the Champion of immigrant, me being one, and it is this generosity of the American nation that has made it the symbol of freedom and happiness for many immigrants like me who faced harsh economic struggles back at my home country, i have tremendous respect and love for America for what it has given me).

But the point is, American people can not claim patriotic remarks like "We Americans are the best because we have invented most of the major scientific inventions, philosophical contents, and have some of the best works in Art, and Music", and they can not make those remarks in it's true essence, because almost all of those achievements are accomplished by Foreign scientists, or phisopher, or artists(and often times than not of German/Eastern European origin or descent). But that's the way America is, it is the country of immigrants, and greatly, Americans take such immigrants to be of their own lot.

EL34, theoretically speaking, it was the germans who were behind your space missions for around 40 years and did also the moonwalk journey. Under american flag... If I am very exaggerating of course. But we know who what the lead man behind all those missions, right?

Re Cadillac, from eu point of view, I kinna like it, it does represent america in its core and what is capable of. But years of lagging behind european premiums and even japanese, still show. And outside of the states, we still wont be seeing a lot of this car. Probably a shame, but also probably realistic consequence of ignoring what the premium world wants or just a consequence of incapability of GM to produce world class leading car. Myself, unless its 30 % cheaper than Audi, Bmw, Mercedes, I would not even consider buying one. Perhaps it should align itself against the Alfa Romeo (in europe)? From price point of view of course.

The Germans were not behind out space program or the atomic bomb program, because it that was true then the Germans would have created those programs before us.

Remember, automobiles are low tech for the most part.

That acutally isn't true at all. von Braun and his cohorts did contribute, but it was primarily in the form of V2 rocket engines as a 1st stage. JPL's avionics and navigation system of the time was far superior to that developed by the Germans.

In some cases, von Braun was excluded from projects on purpose- which frankly did delay things. The launch of Explorer I for example. Eisenhower wanted a more peaceful rocket that was to carry America' first satellite into orbit and stated von Braun was not to be part of it. JPL's Jupiter rocket's first stage was essentially a V2- so he wouldn't use it. So he entrusted the Army to build the Vanguard Rocket to do the job - von Braun was part of the Army department but was not allowed to contribute. After repreted failures of the Vanguard and pressure to get the job done, they did use the Jupiter Rocket.

The U.S. could have beat Russia's Sputnik into orbit had this not been done.

It is too bad that Nurburgring has become some kind of rite of passage or prize fish for Cadillac. I wonder if they really believe that hanging out there will overcome the imagery of old people doddering around in carriage roofed, golded up Barritz-mobiles with Lark scooters hanging off the back bumper.

09CTSVforMe, I don't question the cars. There is no doubt that the new generation of Cadillacs are able and willing.

My comment was more illustrative of the marketing vacuum that uses fast cars going around Nurburgring in one corner of the showroom while still installing carriage roofs, gold emblem packages and white-walls in the other.

Cadillac needs to decide who they are, stick with it, and FORCE their dealers to quit praddling to the Sun City set.

my taste in cars is completely based on whether the valets in new york would laugh at me or not. as we all know, bus boys, valets, door men, and bar backs set the standards of taste.

and as for wanting an m5 over this car; i don't want either. i want a 535i and a lotus.

a v10 commuter car is interesting, but silly at the same time.

as for the american worker, i'll defend them all day. i have a mile long list of things to change in america, but the american worker is not on that list. it takes a lot of gall to pin the slump of the american auto industry during the 90's on the workers. the workers didn't design the garbage, they assembled it. the american auto worker taking a shorter break each day wouldn't have magically made the camaro and mustang lose their solid rear axle, it wouldn't have prevented gm and chrysler from ceasing production of rwd sedans, and most importantly it wouldn't have prevented the big 3 from flooding the market with inefficient suvs.

last i checked, the american worker was still considered VERY highly productive.

"...it wasn't for the Russians then the Germans would have won it."

Certinly the Russian influence on the downfall of Hitler is underestimated, but to say that the war would have turned out differently is a folly of thought. Had Germany not surrendered in May, and the war contined to August (likely), the United States would have dropped atomic weapons on Germany. The policy was, even with Japan to annihilate cities until unconditaional surrender was met. Although, the Soviet invasion of Manchuria is often inappropriatly overlooked.

Contrary to the information of our poorly informed histoy teachers of childhood, Germany was not even developing an atomic weapon. Although the allies believed they were, the Germans did an analysis in June of 1942, stating that the project was not to be pursued, and that it was an entirely theoretical endeavor that would cost too much.

In fact, Japan was clower to the development of an atomic weapon than was Germany- they had perfomed some small scale experiments but were years away from any thing substantial.

People need to know that America,Germany,Japan and most likely Russia were all working to develope the Atom bomb and towards the end Germany and Japan were working together on development, we (USA) put the puzzle together first. The CTS-V dominating the sport sedan class is no surprise to anyone who can open their eyes and acknowledge the success of the 1st generation, and how Cadillac has positioned this generation for continuing that success.

It is not a mistake that it is compared to (and outperforming) BOTH the M3 and M5. It is not a mistake that the release timing is counteracting the Germans. It is not a mistake that this car will hold it's own against any objective comparison in the world. It is not a mistake that morons like amazinbimmer will get their a$$es handed to them by a CTS-V this time around, just like the last generation of V superiority over M's.

"The CTS-V dominating the sport sedan class is no surprise to anyone who can open their eyes and acknowledge the success of the 1st generation"

Huh?

This new V looks fantastic, it's really up there with the M5, E63 and RS6 in terms of speed/desirability, but where is the truth in that statement?

The last-gen CTS-V was a cool car, no doubt, but I've never seen it win a comparison test. It lost to the M3, RS4 and C55 AMG on numerous occasions.

Also, if this new one will be about $70K, where does that leave the underpowered, huge, similarly priced STS-V?

09CTSVforMe09CTSVforMe - 5/13/2008 11:43:49 AM
+4 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
All I am trying to say there is that the 1st Gen CTS-V outperformed all Sedans when it was released. Cadillac's timing of release against the M's, AMG's, and R's cycle allows them to leapfrog the performance standards.

The V lost comparisons overall for perception of the interior and build quality, etc. Valid opinions. But it did outperform the class at that time and bring Caddy to a new level in that regard. If people like amazinbigot would get his head out of his a$$ and acknowledge that BMW is indeed outperformed by other brands, the 2nd Gen V would get the repect it deserves and it would not be a surprise if it (again) outperforms all other sport sedans.

to come back on the subject of that specific Caddy, I like it, O like the fact that GM is coming back, this, the Malibu, the Pontiac G8, the CTS-coupe should be fantastic.
As far as the title of "blistering", not sure about that, othe ing is a long track and even if 7'59" is a great time, there are other sedan close or faster. RS4 has been clocked at 7'53", that's for mister amaizingidiot, because it is faster than his beloved M5, M6 and what ever bucket of plastic he likes.
Keep in mind that a few years back, some regular dude, on stock tyres and pads, run a 8'29" with a RS6 Avant. Audi has run their Q7 V12 Tdi (the all 5600lbs of it) around the same time.
I am just saying to put things in perspective. Because over 21km, 30 sec. is not much, anybody that has raced knows that and knows what I mean.

LOL...Fan Boy wars!!! Cadillac is coming back. We'll see if GM can keep it going strong. Even BMW/MB fans have to agree that the CTS-V MPG is way better than any German auto in its class with equal performance! The PushRods of today is light years ahead than the pushrods of yesterday. BMW makes great engines no doubt and I believe they are better than the PushRods from a valve perspective but I will never underestimate the PRs potential.

We all have our opinions but to purposely try to piss people off is the lowest form of communication.

I hesitate to comment following these fugitives from Leno's Jaywalkers but in the old days, like the 1940s and 1950s, I was in love with Cadillac, the self-proclaimed "Standard of the World", couldn't afford it but aspired to it someday. Well, the world changed and GM's arrogance turned it into a junk-pile and the Japanese, Germans and others all ran over GM. As to the American worker, there is not much question that they are as good as the others, as witness Toyota, Honda, Subaru and Mazda vehicles built in the US and Canada.
I am amazed to see the new Cadillac sedan is a "performance" vehicle - it never was in the old days and never was intended to be. All I can say is good on them but I will never buy it and the question is will anybody buy a 550 hp gas-guzzler with today's gas prices?
