2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 Spec - Supercar Performance At A Supercar Price

The official Corvette ZR1 numbers are in and they're good. Very good:

  • $103,300 MSRP (including $850 destination charge)
  • EPA-estimated fuel economy of 14 city and 20 highway
  • 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds
  • 0-100 mph in 7.0 seconds
  • Quarter-mile elapsed time of 11.3 seconds at 131 mph

The Corvette ZR1 also has a top speed of 205 mph (330 km/h), making it the fastest Corvette ever produced and ranking it among the global super cars of commensurate performance. None of those other super cars, however, equals the ZR1's performance-per-dollar ratio.

"The ZR1 is an incredible machine by any measure," said Ed Peper, North American Vice President, Chevrolet. "There's simply no other vehicle in the world that does a better job of balancing performance, price and fuel economy."

Performance perspective
The Corvette ZR1's 0-60 performance is 0.3-second quicker than the already-quick Corvette Z06 and the 0-100-mph performance is nearly a full second quicker - 7 seconds vs. the Z06's 7.9 seconds. It is performance that is equal to or better than many super cars costing substantially more.

"A favorable power-to-weight ratio gives the ZR1 an advantage over the competition and performance that has to be experienced to fully appreciate," said Tom Wallace, Corvette chief engineer. "Of course, on a racetrack, drivers of competitors' cars may appreciate the ZR1 in a whole different manner."

And the racetrack isn't the only place where the ZR1 trumps its super-car competitors – it beats them at the gas pump, too. According to fueleconomy.gov, the ZR1's EPA-rated 14 city and 20 highway mileage ratings beat 2008 competitors such as the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano (11 city / 15 highway); the Lamborghini Murcielago (8 city / 13 highway) and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage (12 city / 19 highway). They're competitive with the Dodge Viper (13 city / 22 highway) and the Porsche 911 GT3 (15 city / 22 highway).

Under the carbon-fiber hood
A new LS9 6.2L supercharged small-block engine powers the ZR1's performance capability. Heavy-duty and lightweight reciprocating components support high-rpm performance, while a new, sixth-generation supercharger (and complementing charge-cooling system) helps the LS9 make big power and torque across the rpm range. The engine is hand-assembled at GM's Performance Build Center, in Wixom, Mich.

In addition to the LS9 engine, the ZR1 is a technology powerhouse, designed with lightweight and unique components that reinforce its performance with a confidant feel on either a highway or road course.

Options
The standard ZR1 comes with accoutrements based on the Z06, including lightweight seats and lightweight content. The available uplevel interior package includes power-adjustable, heated and leather-trimmed sport seats (embroidered with the ZR1 logo); side air bags; Bose premium audio system; navigation system; Bluetooth connectivity; power telescoping  steering column; custom leather-wrapped interior available in four colors and more.  Chrome wheels are the only other available option on the ZR1.   Detailed pricing noted below.

  • $103,300 Base MSRP including destination
  • $1,700 Gas guzzler tax
  • $10,000 Option package
  • $2,000 Chrome wheels

Buy yourself an R8 and you'll be the one turning your head and staring at the ZR-1's sexy rear end as it flies right by you and fades away as you attempt to keep up.

1st, I wouldn't mind a zr1 over the r8 but both great cars.
2nd, where did the topic of street racing come from? if you actually do that nonsense, I suggest that you keep it to yourself unless you want to have "class".

My R8 still has more curb appeal than a Vette. I've parked beside a "done out vette" before on Robson street here in Vancouver, BC. More tourists and locals took photos of mine than they did his. The Vette was mine so we just had a laugh over it.

If you two "agents" are done. The Audi is BORING. Sanitized for your (and every poser) inept ability behind the wheel. There is nothing like a brutal American V8 to separate the men from the boys.
Refer to TopGear, the GT3 walks all over the VW (Audi,Lambo).
So, if looks is all you want, please pull to the right lane or just park it on Main street and talk about your sweet looking ride.

What does a GT3 have to do with American V8 muscle?

Because a german engineered sportscar beat another set of german (er, italian) sportscars means that a corvette is the best?

I'm having trouble following that logic...

Vette is not comp. for the R8, the GT3 is...my god your are dense. R8 is mentioned about 8 times in this thread. Point (spelling it out) is the R8 is not comp, it can't compete with the GT3, let alone a 638hp Vette.
Dah.

Supercharging the 7.0 would make it to front heavy and it would be hard hiding all that engine under the hood. Could you imagine the size of that hood budge. But I'm sure it would kill on a straight.

But I'd have to agree with the sex appeal of the R8. I'd just leave with the girl at the starting line that's dropping her hands.

Vantage,

If your out of high school having a car shouldn't be your way to get tail.

As for supercharging the LS7, it has cylinder walls to thin to handle the stress of the supercharger's boost for the long haul (and given that it carries the same warranty as the base Corvette and all other Chevrolet models it will need it). Also the ZR1 has many other performance upgrades over the Z06 from braking to suspension. The car is more than just horsepower.

True. R8 def has more exclusivity that women love. But hey...the ZR1 can get nearly as much ass. Either way if you are ugly then Yes he R8 may help more...lol.

For me I rather have the ZR1, def a hard choice between the two but I love the new C6.

I'd take the Vette over the R8 anyday. It's sexier and demands more respect. The Z06 already was able to waste Lambo's and Ferrari's at it's bargain price in comparison. Now this beast will be on the streets. Gotta respect Detroit Muscle.

"It's sexier and demands more respect."

I think both of those could be argued. Though the C6 is the most respectable corvette in a long time and it is to be commended.

I have to think a Vette that is purchased in the same showroom that sells Cobalts simply does not have the same appeal as a Ferrari or Lamborghini. I see Corvettes everyday, and only the occasional Z06 makes me turn my head, I have turned around to get a better look at a Ferrari or Lamborghini that I spot from time to time.

I also take issue with the term "waste". The Z06 could squeak out the F430 and the Gallardo. The reason it won so many comparos is based purely on the "bargain" aspect.

I beg to differ. This car has a standard manufacturer's warranty. A pulley swap and tune will equal more power but at the cost for street-ability and longevity.

The Corvette is a steel at 50K. A5 is a deal at 50k. 100k, the R8 Diesel is the obvious choice.

You're right, the Corvette is a "steal" at $50k. The A5 at $50k is not a deal, however, it's overpriced. For $50k in that segment, it's 335i/xi Coupe all day. And the R8 V12 diesel, if they ever build it, will probably be more like $150k, not $100k, considering the regular R8 V8 tops $132k loaded and the V10 will be more (and V12 diesel even more).

91z4ME, I am married with a kid. Thanks. Why are you even on here if you dont find cars sexy????? I was in Miami for a week with my cousins Lambo and Vantage at my disposal. Cars do attract both women and men (and they were adults pcar4evr)... As for cylinder walls you re-sleave then if you still want the POS. Or you sell it to some unsuspecting douch. enough with the long haul BS. Who owns a car for more than 3 year anyway????

I do find cars sexy but I don't rely on them for sex appeal, thanks. Congrats on the kid and congrats to your cousin for having such nice cars.

The people who own cars for more than 3 years are the ones who don't want to waste money on depreciation constantly. If you want to have a car for a few years then lease but don't mod it unless you want to violate the terms of the contract and if you do be man enough to own up to the consequences. You should realize that not everyone has the money to waste buying a new car every couple of years.

Also selling a modded and failed car to "Some unsuspecting douch" might sound fine to you but I would say that you are the douche for selling a damaged car and not declaring it.

If you are buying a used modified car you should know what you are getting into and the problems that could exist. Ever heard "buyer beware"? Guess not. Unless your blind and dumb I dont think you need to declare a supercharger. On that note, am I supposed to strip the engine to check the cylinders before I sell it??? I would keep it at that point.

Nissan GT-R is faster to 60 and only half a sec slower to the quarter mile, so you know the Spec V will be faster than this. GT-R is my pick over this (but admirable execution on GM's behalf).

Did you just say, only a half a second? Do you realize how bad an ass whoopin a half a second is in a drag race? Not to mention the fact that in a rolling street race the "launch control" would not help the GT-R, so the ass whoopin would be even greater. Also, keep in mind, I still don't think the V Spec will have the same power to weight ratio of the ZR1. I do realize that on some tracks, even the standard GTR might outperform the ZR1, but we'll see...

I have to laugh at GM. Only a fool would drop down $100K+ on a Chevy. I don't care how much they talk it up, its not even close to being worth the money. No value in that vehicle equation. Most US roads are congested and the top speed issue is irrelevant in almost every situation.

The Vette is the only sports car that double as a pickup. The hatch is huge, and the hatchbach area is spacious. Like a pickup with a bed cover.

Its a multi purpose speed machine.

Does this new Corvette also retain the same transverse-mounted composite leaf spring suspension of its predecesors, a technology that evolved from the days of the chariot and is found in no other car in the supercar category? It never fails to astound me how the US manufacturers seem to believe that performance is measured soley by HP and straight line performance and not real world conditions.

what does that statement have to do with real world conditions in the slightest??? if by real world conditions you mean epa ratings than maybe you should compare the vettes to similar cars with similar performance power......or the fact that the vette also handles well.....

Apparently another person who believes that straight line performance or lap times around a track are "real world". If only you can see the auto tests they have on TV here in Germany like I do. They make shows like Top Gear (UK) look pale by comparison. I can see by you log name that you're a BMW fan. I've driven BMWs all the way from their 2000 and owned 636csi, 535 and 750iLs. I grant you that they are nice cars. But are they really great cars? Thaty's debatable. The new Vette is also a nice car, but if they really want to join the ranks of true supercars maybe they should invest in newer suspension technology as well. Sure, it works ok but could there be a reason no other supercar uses it?
