2009 Corvette ZR1 could the most fuel-efficient 600-hp car in the world
While Corvette ZR1’s chief engineer didn’t have any official fuel-economy numbers, speaking at a live chat at GMNext.com, Tadge Juechter said that “the ZR1 will be the most fuel-efficient 600-hp car you can buy in the world.” He said that the the fuel economy of the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 ”will be somewhat less than a Z06, and we expect a small gas-guzzler tax.”

Chevrolet has yet to run official fuel-economy testing on the Corvette ZR1, but if Juechter is to be believed the fuel-economy for the ZR1 will somewhere in the ballpark of ...

It does sound like GM suffers from the tallest midgest syndrome, doesn't it?

GM must've caved in and bought Toyotas hybrid system.

They can do that with the vette but none of their sedans can match the fuel economy of Toyota, even though their v6 avalon is bigger than the impala, faster and has more Hp. Amazing they can get that kind of fuel economy out of that engine, especially with the parasitic drag of a supercharger.

Blasphemer! No stinkin' Avalon is faster than my Impala SS.

I'm not talking about the impala SS, I am refering to the top v6 3.9l compared to the avalon. I know the SS is fast, but it's front wheel drive not my definition of a real American muscle car, and they threw the v8 in to save face. It's still FWD. Try to punch the gas and pass someone. thet thing ends up all over the road. you have to change lanes first then hit the gas or you'll get pulled all over the road when the monstous v8 torque reaches those front wheels. Trust me my neighbor has a black one. yeah its fast but you can't even get traction till your over 30mph. off the line theres too much torque for the FWD setup to handle. traction interferes big time in first gear at all speeds, and if you turn it off it flat out smokes the tires even when you kick down to firts at about 25mph. fast but poorly engineered.

And I'm not an avalon fan, but stone basically summed up why the vette is so good on fuel economy. none of the exotics from porsche lambo ferrari etc have the torque to have a 6th gear that tall, well the 911 turbo may but the turbos would be constantly spooled to maintain speed. plus all of those expotics use 6th gear on a race trak. you would never see 6th in a vette on any track except the top speed test track. 6th gear is usless on a vette. the only purpose is fuel economy.

BMW745i,
The GM 3.9 liter motor is not forced induction, you are thinking of the 3.8 series II supercharged. It had/has 240hp and 260lb ft torque motor from the early 1990's gets 16/28. Not too shabby, IMO. What did Toyotas 1990's V6 with those performance numbers acheive?

not saying the 3.9 is forced induction. I was comparing the Avalon with the impala 3.9. I was comparing the performance vs hp and fuel economy. the only mention of ofrced induction was when I was talking about the torque and how the 911 porsche was probably the only other car that has the torque to be able to have a 6th gear as tall as the vette, however the turbo would be spooled up constantly to develop the necessary torque needed to maintain speed with a gear that tall.

Can't argue with the numbers. impressive if they are true.

njshift nailed it,

6th gear in every Vette is extra extra tall. Combine that with the massive torque and you get adequate cruising and super fuel economy. You could not pull this off with a 3.5 V6, just not enough torque to keep the car moving with a super tall 6th gear. I watched Clarkson go from 0 to like 170 IN 5TH GEAR in a Z06, thats torque ladies and gentlemen, there is no replacement for displacement (except maybe two big honkin turbos).......
