2009 Hyundai Genesis Spy Shot: A Lexus Killer In The Making?
Scooped somewhere in Korea, this is the production version of the 2007 NY Show Genesis concept, Hyundai’s first luxury sedan which is expected to go on sale in the USA, Korea and elsewhere next year. From what we can make, maybe Hyundai fine tuned the design here and there, but basically, the Genesis’ styling doesn’t seem altered in comparison with the prototype we saw in New York. The production version is expected to be offered with both V6 and V8 engines when the rear wheel drive sedan goes on sale in early 2008 as a 2009 model. Read Article

I have to say that is a good looking car. It will all boil down to interior refinement and cost difference between the cars.

Of course no self respecting executive will drive a Hyundai here in the U.S.--there is an image barrier nyundai must break through.

Has anyone else noticed the Hyundai Santa Fe ad in the middle of every article? Remember when Lexus ads predominately ruled over this site?

As long as the interior is better than the Chrys 300 & 300C, they have a future HIT. It will make a major splash in the near-luxury-to-luxury market that will be felt by long-time luxury players such as Cadillac (CTS, DTS), Lincoln (Town Car, MKS), and Toyota/Lexus (Avalon, ES).

I agree. If there is one Lexus that does stand to lose something on behalf of this Hyundai, it's the ES, but not the entire line-up as Agent009 and others would have you believe. However I really don't see that happening considering the ES is the best-selling Lexus in the entire line-up.

Hey Dumpsty, the CTS is a luxury/sport model, it shall not be compared to those lesser models you mentioned.

BULLDOGZ, I dont think you were in a CTS. Sure the interior is B.S. but aside from that, its a pretty well built and nice car...

I know it makes for a compelling headline, but no Hyundai will ever be a Lexus killer. Let's be real. I guess Avalon, Impala or 300 killer just doesnt carry the same cache, huh.

Hyundai could be the next Toyota. They're following similar foot steps like Toyota did. Good for them!

As was stated by Ozwazyrabbit, Hyundais have a image problem. The majority of their line up are cheap transportation, many still don't offer side impact airbags. Does anybody remember the Hyundai/Kai exec being interviewed at the New York Autoshow? He admitted this So how is Hyundai going to position this as a luxury model, when the rest of their car line up is in the subcompact and compact car category?

Really? I thought the front looks like a Chrysler Sebring and the back looks like a Lincoln MKZ.

No, not a Lexus killer. I know, I know, "Lexus started out in the luxury division the same way Hyundai is" blah, blah, blah. Well at least Lexus was fully prepared to take on the competition by offering competitive options on their cars. Look at Hyundai: they glue a piece of vinyl on the dash that looks like wood, they don't offer navigation system, or a heck of a lot of other features that Lexus does (automatic adjusting seat belts, HD navigation, assisted parking, brake hold, etc.) That's why this isn't a threat to Lexus. Plus, look at it this way: a car with 300+ horsepower that is supposedly comparable to Lexus for around $30k. How good could it really be?

Most of the BMW/Lexus comparison are welcomed by the Lexus crowd. They hold their own quite well

this car will never be considered in the same league as lexus or any other luxury car.
lexus started out low, but they were always toyotas luxury brand. hyundai sells cheap cars. if this car is priced at 25,000 then it might steal camry, maxima and accord sales............no one looking at am acura, infiniti or lexus wants some Hyundai.
the truth is, it IS EMBARASSING to be seen or driving in a hyundai.
Resale value sucks nuts as well on these cars.

Remember the Germans said the same of Lexus. Now look at who is eating crow. Hyundai has to start somewhere.

Lexus started out with comparable features. Hyundai's don't have the equipment to compare (navigation, real wood trim, etc.). That's where Hyundai and Lexus' origins are different.

Okay, great, but what about the rest? Will it have real wood trim (the same type used by Yamaha in creating extremely expensive pianos), highest grade leather available, ventilated seats, power reclining seats, power fold down rear DVD player, climate controlled rear seats, power window shades, built in massager, something similar to OnStar, SmartAccess, and/or an extremely quiet ride? If any one of those is a no, then this can't compete with Lexus.

Let see, it steal or copy the current design from the current Toyota Camry and it had the side mirror on the side of the car just like Lexus GS model.

This car will be junk, looks like a copy of the LS. As far as navigation it was Acura too first introduce it to the US in the 96' RL. Lexus should easily win this battle though and tank Hyundai in the process.

BY the way all Hyundai does is copy Toyota and Honda designs. They stole Honda's "H", copied the Odessey with their mini van, bit the Accord rear end with the Sonata. Veracruz looks just like a RX, Genesis looks like an LS. Accent looks like a Civic and a Corolla put together, am I missing anything? I guess Hyundai and Kia got tired of copying Jaguar. lol

Hyundai copying Lexus today is not unlike Lexus copying Mercedes in 1989. History repeats itself, mark my world Hyundai will have a brand considered luxury in ten years. If only in the US

I wish BMW would have consulted a head shrink before approving the Bangle butt. The freudian explanation for that butt design would have caused BMW to think twice before going into production with it.

This car is on the top of my shopping list because of its powerful DOHC V8, RWD, and LSD. I suspect it will be more luxurious than my other favorite, the Buick Lucerne with the DOHC Northstar V8.

WHY NOT CALL IT A BMW 3 SERIES KILLER, OR MERCEDES C CLASS KILLER, OR AUDI A4 KILLER. THE BLOGGERS ON AUTOSPIES ARE JUST SO MUCH PREJUDICED, THEY'LL JUMP AT ANYTHING TO BELITTLE JAPANESE AUTOMAKERS. AND I'LL BE DEBOOSTED FOR THAT FOR SURE.
