2009 Pontiac G8 GXP pricing announced

GM has just announced the pricing on the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP which will arrive in showrooms in February 2009.

The rear-wheel-drive sport sedan with 415-hp will start at $39,995 including a $1,700 gas-guzzler tax and $685 destination chargers.

The 2009 G8 GXP comes standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission but a 6-speed manual is available for an extra $695. A sunroof is optional with a price-tag of $900.

Fuel-economy for the 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP is rated at 13/20 mpg (city/highway). Just a side note: The 422-hp 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS will go for $30,995.

Won't this car be free very soon? If GM ditches Pontiac, who would even consider actually buying one?

GM killing Pontiac shouldn't deter anyone from buying this car. Pontiac is just a brand - the car is actually a Holden with a Corvette V8. You can have the car serviced at any Chevy dealer and GM will honor the warranty.
They killed Oldsmobile years ago, but you can still take your Oldsmobile to the Chevy or Buick dealer for parts and service.

Servicing aside, why would anyone buy a car with a nameplate that 1) either has been sold down the river, or 2) like Oldsmobile, no longer even exists? It would be a foolish purchase.

Same reason that you'd buy an Olds 442 or a Plymouth 'Cuda.......
So what about the nameplate..... the car is still the car, everything tangible about it still exists, and there'll be no reason to be worried about keeping it on the road, because parts etc will still be available......

I honestly think Pontiac should cease to exist. GM should channel its efforts into improving Chevy and Cadillac. I am still waiting for my 400hp RWD Impala! Impala sales will go through the roof if GM brought back a RWD Impala. Remember, NASCAR fans do not drive a Prius.

I've been saying this for a while. GM only needs Chevy and Cadillac: mass market & luxury.
This car is great, but it should never have been a Pontiac. With a crossbar grill and a bowtie this is the all-new Impala SS I've been waiting for.

I've added this pricing to TrueDelta.com's database, and even estimated invoice pricing. A comparison with the Camaro that equips the latter up to the GXP's level then shows a difference at MSRP of $6,040. Adjusting for remaining unshared features reduces the gap to about $5,300 at MSRP, and $5,100 at invoice.

Not nearly $10k, but still sizable.
