200mph supecar with better mileage than a Prius
The Trident Iceni biodiesel sports car first made waves a couple years ago with a set of numbers that left many people scratching their heads - a 200mph top speed, 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds, and fuel economy figures of up to 83mpg (2.82L/100km) on the highway.

Development of the first prototypes has now been complete and the company is currently seeking investors to fund the project.

Michael,

wake up Michael, its 2008 not 1980. Prius and LS600h bateries are A LOT MORE HARMFUL to the environment then the whole lifetime of the regural gas car that pollutes the environment.

First of, You're a retard.
Second, Toyota's hybrid technology is more harmful to the air than new diesels since it takes many trips around the world ON AIRPLANE just to make the batteries. Plus, Prius are also harmful to the eye by omitting tons of ugliness. If you ask me, Toyota is a Lose Lose Situation.

The headline to this article makes no sense. When talking about fuel economy everyone knows that the prius is not the last word. Far from it in fact. The BMW 5 Series handily beat it in a real world test.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/driving/used_car_reviews/article3552994.ece

Furthermore, BMW was voted the World Green Car of Year.

http://www.wcoty.com/media/?release=39&year=2008

BMW is also confirmed as the UK's Cleanest Auto Maker.

http://www.worldcarfans.com/9080721.006/bmw-confirmed-as-uks-cleanest-auto-maker

This all goes to show how inappropriate it is continue to hold the prius out like a standard of some sort when it clearly is not.

Even after factoring in battery manufacture and transport, the Prius will still net fewer emissions. Also I think in the real world the Prius would get better mileage than the 520d, although I would gladly give up a few mpg to drive a 520d over a Prius.

520d hybrid would be amazing. No reason why diesel and hybrid technology can't co-exist.

@ the troll formerly know as MT,

1) There's too much good in life that it's not worth the risk of your personal health by forcefully seeking attention by trolling B.S. across the internet. The emotional crash (and it will come) will be so severe that it will lead crime, bipolar disorder, and/or "pushing up daisies". So with heart felt sincerity, SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP! There is no shame in doing so.

2) Now that I'm done being nice, you have obviously gone "full retard" and you're exposing your sexual perversions regarding Toyota hybrids while willfully ignoring the fact that TOYOTA SELLS DIESELS, LOTS OF THEM, throughout the world. Your beloved Toyota sells OIL BURNERS, TOO!, "smogin'" up the environment. Hell, does Toyota even use some type urea particulate filtration on those FILTHY EARTH KILLERS? Tell us, genius. You're the "Toyota Expert"...at least you're suppose to be with all that dogsh*t that excretes from your so called "brain".

3) The source engine, GM's 6.6L Duramax diesel engine, is one efficient truck engine that uses diesel particulate filtration and exhaust gas recirculation to minimize "dirtying the environment".

4) The car is in pre-production, which means much can change between now and its initial production run. Don't be surprised if a) urea filtration technology (Ad-Blue, BlueMotion, Bluetec, etc.) is added, so it will meet and/or exceed even California's EPA standards when it goes into production, and b) becomes eligible for the same tax credits that the Prius used to have and the Mercedes 3.2L V6 Bluetec engines and VW Jetta CleanDiesel TDI get now and Mercedes' Bluetec Hybrid will receive.

5) Let's be honest, if the Trident had a Toyota badge on it, you would kiss its ass. If the Prius and/or LS600h went from gas-electric hybrid to diesel hybrid, your joy would compel you to father their love child!

6) Learn how to do some research sometime. You aren't Ann Coulter, who can mask her ignorance with being a hot piece of T & A. Nor female.
For that matter, Fox News would disown you since Toyota isn't an American based company and you aren't "Fair and Balanced".

Oh, and one last thing: Since you are so completely incompetent of your Toyota's own technological developments, TOYOTA IS BRINGING A TRUCK DIESEL ENGINE TO THE USA, STARTING WITH A 4.5L V8 CLEAN DIESEL IN 2010!!! Now that you know, I bet that changes your opinion of diesels real quick, doesn't it?

I believe in them so much, that I get my news from NPR, BBC and Reuters instead!

Biofuels are not the solution, using up arable land to grow crops that will be turned into fuel is vastly wasteful.

@ auto001,

Don't be so quick to dismiss biofuels.

E85 is a good start in the right direction, but is among the worst choice available...something about lobbyist making a cash grab.
(Wanna have some fun? Search for the last 2-9 years of FTC and SEC filings from Cargill and any Congressperson who signed off on E85 legislation. Then prepare to become violently ill! :P)

Sugar cane, Sugar Beets, sawmill waste, dead plants, and my personal fav, garbage and landfill waste, are just a few of the biofuel options.

Ever heard of Tempate?

I hadn't until a month ago. Long story short, it's a plant thought to have no use and could grow in abundance in some of the worse conditions for plant life. In fact, it almost became extinct. As it turns out , it makes an inexpensive biofuel. And the information on it has been around since 1993 at the very least!

Reality check time:

1. The batteries in the Prius are NOT more harmful to the environment. Debunk at http://www.noisettefamily.com/2007/09/23/toyota-debunks-the-hummer-vs-prius-myth/. Excerpt below:

"For example, the Prius is assumed in this report to be driven only about 9200 miles a year, and to have a service life of less than 12 years and 109,000 miles. CNW assumes the average Hummer H3 will travel 207,000 miles over a lifetime of 15-plus years. The H1, incidentally, is assumed to have a lifetime of nearly 35 years, with 379,000 total miles.

According to data from the New Vehicle Consumer Study by Maritz Research, Prius owners plan to drive their vehicles an average of over 14,600 miles per year. And if Prius hybrids last only the 12 years assumed by CNW Marketing Research, Inc. — also an unsupportable assumption, given the substantially greater service lives of other Toyota vehicles — they would still rack up more than 175,000 miles in their lifetime."

2. The claims of this company don't hold water. Two big things are necessary to improve fuel economy in a traditional ICE vehicle: first is to reduce necessary load by improving the aerodynamics the second is to reduce frictional and pumping losses in the engine itself.

The aero of that vehicle blows and a V8 is the wrong way to address friction and pumping losses. If it was a turbo 4 I might believe them.

@ GreenPlease,

Here's your reality check:

DON'T USE A HUSBAND AND WIFE'S PERSONAL BLOG AS A SOURCE OF TECHNICAL AND FACTUAL INFORMATION!!!
I'm sure Agnes and Damon are quite intelligent, but they don't work for a non-profit institution or a marketing firm, and don't have engineering degrees.

-Their blog post is nothing more than cut-and-paste of the September 2007 Toyota Hybrid Snergy View Newsletter found on "Toyota Life" found here:

http://www.toyota.com/toyotalife/hybrid/article.html

...Rather sad IHMO. If this was grade school, Agnes and Damon would both get a "F" for plagiarism!

-They reference an early 2006, mostly debunked CNW Marketing Research report, a FOR-profit company funded by public and private entities (I'm not implying bias, just stating fact), that clearly states that its 458 page report is "non-technical".

-The Pacific Institute is reputable, but their report is from May 2007 and much has changed since.

-Maritz Research is a Fortune 500 company that is obviously FOR-profit. Again, I state this only as fact and do not want to imply bias. But somebody had to pay to do the research.

Not to throw the Prius under the bus, it does have one really cool feature that we should all admire: it meets the world's strictest EPA figures for vehicles, the state of California's Tier II, Bin 5, standards.
In fact, it meets Bin 3 standards (Bin 1 being the best). No slouch of its own, VW's Jetta CleanDiesel already meets the Tier II, Bin 5 standard. Although it's shipping to dealers now, there is enough public information available to determine if the Jetta will exceed the Bin 5 standard, moving to Bin 4 or possibly, Bin 3, like the current Prius.

It's sad that the older the majority of us get, the fewer of us use the basic teaching of proper research taught to us in grade school.

(...Remedial classes are available! j/k)

look at the size of the wheels compared to the car. If those are 18s that car is practically a go-cart.

Where can I buy this? that right it not out yet so we better wait for it to come and get real world resutls before we make judgement.

And if it even beat the Prius in fuel economy, than it also own pretty everything out there as well. It will pretty own BMW, MB, Audi, you name brands out there.

And a asking price of approximately $139,518, let be honest how many out there can actually afford this? Not much.

But still definitely a marvel of Engineer

It would be great if this car ever got into production. Who says you can't save the planet & have fun at the same time?

Speaking of biodiesel fuels, has anybody ever heard of Jatropha curcas? It achieves 10 times the fuel yield per acre of corn, fertilizes the soil in which it is planted, is resistant to droughts and pests, etc. This sounds like a perfect "fuel crop".
