The pos 3.2L in the a4 had 17/26mpg with only 265hp. I think the real story is not in the couple mpg gain they managed to squeak out, but the fact that they got out an extra 68hp at the same time. Forced induction win :)

as to the diesel... torque doesn't mean much, if you have a 200hp/300ft-lb car and a 200hp/100ft-lb car and gear them both to redline at the same speed they'll get the same torque at the wheels. That being said it's not surprising that a car with 68 less hp was able to get better mileage...

Then there is the premium $3000 more than petrol 335i, or $8000 more than petrol 328i to an already inflated BMW prices. Your point is MOOT.

i have to disagree with the "inflated prices" comment. bmws are more expensive, but not inflated. bmw offers many more options as far as customization goes that audi can't touch. there are many interior color options and trims available for bmw but audi offers only the basics which is disappointing. the equipment options in audi are also either all-or-nothing which is reather annoying. i like being able to pick what i do and do not want - which bmw allows. bmws do drive better as well. the steering is much more communicative and the braking is more precise.

all that being said, i currently have a 135i and an X6... but we are trading the X6 in to save some extra money for a project next year. still, my X6 drives way better than the audi i'm getting.

Did you just say epa numbers are inflated? haha, european cycle numbers are inflated, anyone can get higher then epa. It annoys the shit out of me when I hear local Toyota dealerships claiming the prius gets 71mpg and the Camry hybrid gets 51mpg, where there respective epa numbers (which everyone in North America generally uses) is 50mpg combined for the prius and 34mpg combined for the camry...

Not sure about the A4, but other 2.0T can easily beat their EPA ratings on the highway based on many accounts.

With the extra low end torque and overdrive gearing it wouldn't be unreasonable if the S4 got around 28 on a highway cruise. Of course if you aren't paying for gas (like car mags) or if you are stuck in traffic your mpg won't be impressive.

the S4 was with the M3 but BMW came out with a 335 and moved the M3 up to the RS4 range. The S4 is a 335 competitor and it will do a great job.

With a base MSRP of $45,900 it is about $1,1000 less then a 335 with the same options and if you compair it to the 335 ix it is about $3,000 better and a much nicer car.

Wait, I thought it was the other way around, that the S4 was the M3 competitor, but it was Audi that created the RS4 and pushed the S4 downmarket to compete with BMW's base offerings. I'm pretty sure it wasn't BMW, as they were the ones who eliminated their 3 car setup (325, 328 and 330), opting to have just 2 now AND still offer the M3.

No, I'm pretty sure Homer had it mostly right. From 1995 - 2007 BMW and Audi had their products staggered with the 3, S4, M3 and RS4. Then in 2007, BMW matched the S4's performance with the 335 and in '08 the M3 matched the RS4. When I use the word "match", you know what I mean...I'm not trying to start a pissing contest. Now, it seems like they're just going to stagger their release dates so that one automaker "one-ups" the other one every release.

the supercharged V6 combo will be quicker than the previous V8. And if you want it to be louder, you can get an aftermarket exhaust. Though it won't have the V8 sound. The fuel economy is way better and there is quite a bit more performance, and the new S4 should be cheaper than before.

The V8 was a poor choice for Audi's B6/7 S4.

The bi-turbo B5 S4 was a much better car IMHO.
