2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS Preview
As we are used by history when we have a Camaro we also have a SS version. And the 2010 model will be no exception. The Camaro SS will be launched just a few months after the standard version will hit the market. It will be a serious competition for the Ford Mustang Shelby and Dodge Charger SRT8.

The new Camaro was announced to resemble a lot to the concept car unveiled in January at NAIAS, the only difference being that the 2010 Camaro won’t be offered in a hardtop version unlike the concept Camaro and the 1969 Camaro. The initial production is said to begin at the end of 2008, and the car is expected to become available in showrooms in the first quarter of 2009.

The concept car was 186.2 inches long and used a 110.5-inch wheelbase. The wheels were concept car size reaching 21s at the front and 22s at the rear and where shod with huge 275/30 front and 305/30 rear tires, but they won’t make it to production. The power plant under the bonnet was a 400 bhp LS2 6.0-liter V-8 engine mated with a six-speed manual transmission.

Initially there were rumors saying that the Camaro SS will be powered by a LS6 engine. But the LS6 only produce 405 in the Corvette and the most powerful Camaro will have a maximum power of 500 hp. This let us believe that the Camaro SS will be powered by a LS7 engine with an output of 505 hp. The engine will be matted with a six-speed automatic transmission.

i wonder how these new camaros will compare to the last generation they were very fast if anyone remembers, the camaro ss v8 was running low 5's high 4's thats with 320hp which is pretty amazing even by todays standards the new mustang has just gotten to point where its as fast as the last generation Camaro. The Z28 would also get low to mid 5's 0-60, it will be interesting to see how this new more powerful model will compare.

The previous generation F-cars, for all their crudeness, were (indeed) very fast (straight-line) vehicles, but customers demand so much more of their vehicles than straight-line acceleration, so I feel confident that Bob and the boys at GM have taken that into consideration, and the new Camaro will be a very well-rounded performer.

bmwdrvr and DaHarder, you're both correct. The solid-axle rear suspension of the old pony cars was actually pretty decent at putting down the power in a straight line. The Mustang still uses this setup, and while it gives up early on a twisty road course, it is indeed a fun car for straights.

The new Camaro will have an independent rear suspension: it'll cost more, but odds are it'll handle far better than any previous pony car. The new engines, too, are guaranteed to be impressive. What remains to be seen is whether the chassis is light and stiff enough to make it a true sports car, or whether this is marketed at the late-baby-boom cruiser market. There's no doubt that GM could have made the body lighter and more aerodynamic if it hadn't decided to use the 30-year-old styling theme. The 2004 GTO was actually more like what a pony car should have evolved into - a relatively inexpensive and low-key "sleeper" with power and handling.

i don't think they want it to be a sports car. they never did. it was always a sports coupe. no rear seat. sedan based.

chevy has a pretty nice sports car already.

This car is so late to the market. And like the Dodge Challenger it is going to be too large and overweight. Mustang sales are going down while the Challenger and Camaro are going to be more expensive than the Mustang (and more sophisticated). It will be interesting to see how big the market is for a big, heavy, good looking coupe.

As always, they'll sell fairly well initially, and trickle-down to little or nothing after the newness wears off...

It's a vicious cycle, but an inevitable one.

On What Planet?

It's what is done with said horse-power, not how much it has.

Note: I'll be so glad when these stupid horse-power wars are over!

Porsche hasn't really changed their design from the initial start of the 911. If you have something/model/concept that works and you update it every year to make it better...and it sells progressively every year...why change.

Camaro/mustang had a design, powerplant, chassis, look\...just plain feeling that appealed to the masses originally and now they are going back to it. I'm not saying this will work for every situation under the sun. (Some need a total re-invintion) But for Icon's of the industry...Doesn't it...shoudn't...wouldn't it work?

I disagree! Everything at Porsche changed in '89 when the 911SC morphed into the 964. The 911 was an old car with old fashioned characteristics that nobody wanted anymore. It was going to lead Porsche to their demise and hence the reasoning behind the 964's new and improved everything.

I see the new Camaro being GM's 964. A modern car for the modern world. A reinvention in old clothing.

First of all, there is no such thing as to much power. Bring it on with 500 hp---I like what I am reading about this SS.

SECOND, I am already cringing when I think of going into a Chevy dealer and putting up with their SCALPING prices (and I don't care about the capitalism, free market value arguement). The dealers are going to ask for 10-25k++ over sticker. I wonder why GM allows this---and I know they "cannot control the dealers" BUT I actually believe GM could if they wanted.

So, your telling me that the 2010 Camaro SS will NOT be available in a hardtop NOR will it be available in a manual transmission application?

I think I'll Pass...
