2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS to be powered by LS2 V8
So we’ve been seeing spy shots and videos of the upcoming sportier version of the Camaro, the Camaro SS, but haven’t heard anything on powertrain details. The car recently hit up the Nurburgring for some high-speed testing wearing Brembo brakes and AutoCar has provided more details on what’s going to be under the hood.
The Chevrolet Camaro will arrive on the stateside early next year. Most Camaros will be equipped with V6s. A Chevrolet source has said the base model will be offered with a 3.6 liter V6 producing up to 281 horsepower. We’ve also heard that a four-cylinder turbo is being considered later down the road that will produce 260 horsepower.
Now for those you who are power hungry for a true muscle car, the V8 range-topper should satisfy your needs. According to AutoCar, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS will likely get GM’S 6.0L LS2 V8 engine that produces...

they must not be having a ZR1 model, because i would think they would do V6 base, Zr1 with the LS2 400hp, and an SS with 500hp LS7

the Camaro gets worse looking every time I see it, and I started off liking it. I think three years of "spy shots" has taken its toll on me, now I just don't care. Come out with it already.

It does seem like one of the longest gestations ever, and the car STILL won't be out until next year. Meanwhile, the current generation Mustang will be offered in its 40th variation...
... and Dodge managed to get the Challenger out before the Camaro. Imagine the lost sales.

I'm starting to think the delay is because they did a good job of mocking up an exterior, realizing everyone liked it and going "oh sh*t, now we actually have to build the innards of this thing" and that's the point we're at now. I know it's based on the Zeta platform, but they probably need to put together more than just that.

The LS2 is a dead engine. It isn't even in production now, so how will it be in production for the 2010 Camaro SS? Sounds like someone doesn't know what the hell they are talking about. If they had said L76, L92, or LS3 I might have believed them but not LS2.

Something to think about for sure. It appears by several sources that the LS2 is not dead and may be resurrected for Camaro. The V8 itself will be extinct in the near future. Only Cylinder deactivation and direct injection can keep it going for a longer period.

I'd guess L76, as it is in the four door equivalent of this car. That motor offers cylinder deactivation too.

Why even make the smaller engines, other than fuel economy. For a car like that, you have to get the 400 hp engine.

A few years late to be introducing a gas guzzler in a $4 - $5 a gallon gasoline enviornment.
The $2 gas party is is over..

This is why the Vette got 430BHP to make room for the Camaro's 400BHP and not compete within itself (Chevy). As for gas guzzler I am certain the MPG will be the same or near the Vette which is better than most sports cars. Def better than my GFs 350Z Convertable which she had for 3 months and gets 15MPG on average...lol.

So you think we should all be driving Kias and Hyundais?
If this was in a value based automotive thread, it might be relevant.

Probably an LS3 thats detuned to 400hp, to stay below the base vette. LS2 is dead.

GM needs to be working on a hybrid 2-mode Camaro variant that can accept the 3.6L V6 and all the LS engines.

FOR ALL YOU GUYS WAITING FOR THE NEW CAMARO, I WILL LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT THE CAMARO WILL NOT HAVE THE LS2. I KNOW THIS BECAUSE I WORK AT A CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND WE HAD TWO NEW CAMAROS COME IN FOR SERVICE, AND THE DRIVER WOULD NOT LET US KNOW WHAT ENGINE IS IN THEM BUT THEY SAID ALL THEY CAN TELL ME IS IT IS NOT THE LS2.
