2010 Ford Taurus to replace Crown Victoria police cars by 2011?

My PD would be interested thats for sure. We are still runnin early 2000's Crown Vics and they recently got a couple of Chargers. There biggest issue with the charger is that overall it's small for what they need to have in it compared to a Vic.

I could picture the Taurus being a PD car. Maybe they will offer a RWD V8 in the car for police use only.

The departments complain about everything but the C-Vic being too small. Yet I remember well plenty of Fox Mustangs, Dodge Diplomats, and Fairmonts doing duty in the 1980's as cop cars. Those things were tiny.

I appreciate the arguments for RWD in a police car for handling and bulletproof durability. But times are unfortunately changing. It would be nice if Ford, GM would pony up a RWD platform but sadly they dont seem to be on that wavelength.

If I were Ford I'd be careful. Yeah, it means lots of sales but it also just places this new Taurus in the category as a public service vehicle. Not a good image for your flagship model.

Hopefully the Taurus can handle the abuse the departments put on these cars. Everytime I see a Crown Vic around here the brakes are squeeling,the shocks sound shot,tires are bald etc. The Taurus' engine is fairly new,hopefully it can hold up. It is faster,bigger and gets better mpg,it just doesnt look like a "tough" car though lol. Also,the FWD decision sucks and I'm 99% sure Ford is not going to release a RWD only Taurus for the departments. AWD wouldnt be so bad though.

Unless the city in question is a die hard Ford customer I don't see the transition happening at all. I have no problem with front drive, but cops seem to. I think Ford should contract a new company to continue making the Crown Vic under licence, and allowing that company to update it periodically at their discretion as per customer and trend requirments. British-Leyland did it in the UK with the LondonTaxi and that spun off vehicles that are iconic. Anyway...the debate will continue in the real world...

Why does a cop car (in America) have to be large? In other countries smaller cars are used. Is it an image/intimidation thing?
