2010 Mercedes-Benz S250 CDI BlueEfficiency: the first S-Class with a four-cylinder engine

It may not be fast like it's buff brothers the S63 and S65 AMG's but my god a car of this size generating 30+ MPG is impressive no matter how you view it! GOT DAYUM!!! its also got over 500 torques ! out of a 4 cyl. can't hate on it, only respect it. if it was a v6 none of yall would be hating but you look down on a 4 banger. one of the benzos eclass cdis of the old made only 204hp or something and went from not to sixty in 6 point somethin seconds... IMPRESSIVE yo! faster than an accord with a v6 engine and more than 200+

while i think lexus my fav. the s-klasse has always been the benchmark luxury sedan everyone wants to be. my god i can't believe im admittin to it hahah!!!... but because they are benchmark they can do anything

I believe the article indicates a 4-cyl engine with 540 (Nm) of torque --- not lb-ft of torque. 540 Nm = 398 lb-ft of torque.

Even still. Almost 400 lb-ft of torque is quite a bit from just a 4-cyl diesel engine. And to return nearly 40 mpg is excellent for a car that size.

Good, now it's time for a reality check of this farting lame propaganda.

The E250 CDI returned 8.5 l/100km = 27.6 mpg US [1] (or 27.6/1.12=24.6 mpg US of gasoline equivalent) in a test done by the Germans. It's a fact:

The S class is significantly larger and heavier. Expect 24 mpg US diesel (or 21 mpg US of gas equivalent). Maybe, with some careful driving, 28 mpg will be realistic (24 mpg of gas equiv.).

So you'll get the picture how, well... not smart one has to be to swallow the 40 mpg promise from the brochure, right?


Now the performance. The E250 CDI does 0-62 in shy of 8 seconds. The larger, heavier S class will do it on some 9 seconds. Which puts in on par in terms of performance with a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla.

Clearly, the Benz is aiming high.


So let's sum up. You'll get a 28 mpg (24 mpg gas equiv.) Mercedes Benz S class which will be blown by the most commodity compacts. Only it costs some 5x more.

Can't wait for this distinctive premium feel!

Not a single one 204 HP Mercedes E class ever made it from 0 to 60 in 6 point something seconds. Not even in someone's childish wet dreams.

Torque is just a ratio of power to revolutions at which this power is generated. Slow revving engines (like diesels) have higher torque but this is meaningless cause it's only the power that matters.

The hefty torque and the properly geared transmission will make the car just as smooth as the S350 CDI. The performance will be effortless to say the least. There is talk that the S250 CDI performs like the W220 S320 CDI in terms of acceleration. It's a quick car.

The car weighs so much. I dont care how properly geared the transmission is and torque will help it a little,but that motor and tranny WILL definately be working a sweat and that car is not going anywhere anytime fast. 224 hp is a joke in a car like this. All that money better buy me something north of 300 hp. In a car that weighs that much it better buy me over 350. This whole hybrid save gas crap is getting out of hand. If Tesla can do it right with EV and not sacrafice performance,so can everyone else.Basically, in a car like that either throw in a good motor with some balls or dont throw one in at all.

224 horsepower is completely satisfactory for such a car. In the 1970s Mercedes had the 280S and 280SE/SEL W116 S-Klasse which had 150 /160 horsepower respectively and they moved along just fine reaching 100 km/h in under 10 seconds. Now we live in the 21st century and with similar horsepower figures and similar weight we can build cars that are faster and more fuel efficient. Stop thinking in narrow minded terms.

And you're forgetting the torque. It's massive. Torque benefits acceleration and the S250 CDI has lots of it.

Torque is a useless number, you can use a higher gear ratio to get the same torque out of a less torquey equally powered engine.

If you're a VIP with many enemies and you want an S-Klasse then there is really only the S500 and S600 Guard models to choose from. And the added weight of the armor gives them an acceleration time of around 8 seconds to 100 km/h which will probably be similar to that of the S250 CDI.
