In the glamorous days of Hollywood past, movie stars would take their Delages, Delahayes and Duesenbergs—invariably the long-wheelbase variants, yet often with intimate 2-place seating—and motor to the desert community of Palm Springs, there to live the sporting life and luxuriate poolside in view of a snow-tipped San Jacinto Peak.
In these more egalitarian times—at least as we’re inclined to live them—the wheelbases have been reduced and the practical seating increased. Luxury and the sporting life are still aspirational, though, and Palm Springs continues as a desirable destination.
