2011 BMW 1-series spy images
BMW released an updated version of the 1-series compact late last year but a suspicious prototype of the hatch is still running around German streets.
At first appearance the car looks like an ordinary 1-series hatchback but look closer and you’ll notice several key features that reveal this is something very different.
The car pictured here is in fact an early test-mule for the next-generation 1-series hatch due most likely due in late 2011 or early 2012.

Cool. A lot of people are unaware that the thing about the "new 1 series" is that it isnt new at all. It has already been out in Europe for a few years. Although I'm not a huge fan of the styling, I am eager to see the next model.

I hope that the next Generation BMW 1 series coupe for the USA will be at least 200 pounds lighter with a much sleeker shape of the current 1. The next Gen 1 should be lower and wider with a less boxey roof line.
Also a Lower price would justify buying one more then a 335i coupe.

i think that roof line is required to accommodate the cranium of a rear passenger.
if they lost the back seat, it would allow a sportier roof line.

If they lost the back seat it would be a Z4.

i think he means losing the rear seats altogether, because the z4 is still a 2+2

The one series coupe doesn't have a boxy roofline, it's more of a bubble.

i know that liking hatches isn't far from burning american flags, but i like this hatch. in fact, i may like it more than the coupe. did i really just admit that?

I agree, I really like the 3 door hatch that we don't get in the US.

"the next 1-series will be bigger than the current model."
lol, that totally defeats the purpose of the 1-series.
They have the 1-series because the 3-series grew too large.
Looks like 10 years from now we'll need the 0-series to fill up the small car segment.

BMW never went hungry "underestimating" the taste of BMW buyers. If they build it - no matter how lame it is, buyers will line up, because this is the "hip" crowd remember, and they will always try to one-up their neighbor by buying the latest and flashiest toy. Just look at their model designations, 1,3,5,7...Series M3,5,6... and Xn, where n=3,4,5... brilliant marketing scheme if you ask me, they can spit one out every quarter and still make profit or break even thanks to its "wanting to impress" fan base.

In my mind, BMW should be taking design cues from the 3-series and putting them in the 1-series. Other than the headlights, there isn't much that the two models share. Almost looks like an X6 "smaller-fied".
A3 still looks much better, and that's coming from a BMW owner/fan. I'll pass on this one.
