2011 BMW M5 Spied (Video)
Listening to the video you will see that this is not your average 5 Series. There is for sure something of M nature luring underneath the hood of this prototype BMW 5 Series. Boy does it sound nice too. The engine is rumored to put out an astonishing 540 bhp to the rear wheels according to the gents at Carmagazine. We hope you noticed the bigger wheels , brakes, and signature quad tip exhaust which also help to point out the identity of this car.

A good studio quality German Neumann microphone will cost you $5,000.

The microphone in that Japanese video camera is worth $25.00

I agree, what's with the music? Ruined the video. Anyway, I don't see why this can't be the successor to the 550i using the twin turbo V8 from the X6. I think it would make more sense in that respect....360hp 4.8L to a 400hp 4.0L TT. Just because Car magazine saw this car testing alongside the E60 M5 doesn't necessarily "confirm" that this car is its successor. Maybe they are simply testing the 400hp twin turbo engine against the V10 in 400hp mode...

In general, I'm having a tough time wrapping my head around a forced induction M car. Why not keep with M heritage and use an NA engine with VVT technology or something to improve efficiency? And even if they are planning to use turbos, I can't imagine the M division using an engine that is already being used in the X6. M cars usually get their own uniquely designed and developed engines and, for the price tag, they should!

They should focus on stripping off excess weight, lowering engine displacement, and maintaining similar power figures. Overall performance would be improved. I think the HP wars are getting ridiculous and are not sustainable. What's on tap for 2015? An 800hp M5? A 850hp RS6? An 100hp Corvette? C'mon. The focus should be on efficiency...weight efficiency, power efficiency, fuel efficiency.

On the one hand I agree.. an M-car is more than just the most powerful car in a given range. It should be a highly tuned, highly developed genetically enhanced brother to the range... rather than just the car with the biggest engine... I think BMW should use the iS tag more. Audi have the standard cars, the S cars and the RS cars... BMW should use the same idea, having standard cars, iS models and M models (with the M being pure thoroughbred)

On the other hand, I am less bothered about the forced induction thing, you can't stand in the way of progress, and if I put my 'purist' hat on I would be sick at the idea of an M5 Touring! a BLOODY ESTATE CAR with an M-BADGE ON IT!!!

FWIW, I don't think that is the M5. Makes no sense to develop the most costly car in the range before any money is being recouped from series production, BMW never have M cars ready for series launches.
