2012 C7 Corvette Will Fuel Efficiency Be Next With a Twin Turbo V6?

2012 C7 Corvette Will Fuel Efficiency Be Next With a Twin Turbo V6?
Even before the tires had cooled on what is the fastest, most powerful Corvette ever to hit the streets of America—we're talking about the 2009 Corvette ZR1 of course—we couldn't help but wonder: How in the
world
are they going to top
this
?
"We can't comment on future product," came the usual, deadpanned reply from the engineers on hand here at the test track. But we have other sources. And we tapped them to find out if there was any truth to the mid-engine rumors, if certain powertrains had been locked in this far ahead of schedule and exactly what design direction the next Vette might take.
So here's our best guess for what General Motors has in store for the C7 Corvette. But keep in mind that a
lot
can happen between now and 2012, when this car is set to debut. Thanks to high fuel prices, the auto industry has changed more in the past two years than it has in the past decade. So don't be surprised if what you read here differs from the fiberglass, steel and aluminum reality of the future.

2012? By that time Lexus will have a car that will be faster, more powerful, more reliable, and more fuel effiecient than that C7 vette.
In fact, the SC430 is a better car than the vette.

you think SC430 is better than that vette because you see things differently and that is a good thing because in your world everyone is moron except you. In a real world things are just completely the other way around.

1. The SC430 is dead. I'm so over looking at that car.
2. Lexus will never make anything that competes (at least directly) with the Corvette, that's not their market.
3. This article really doesn't surprise, Corvettes usually have pretty decent gas mileage for a V8 Sports Car.
4. I hope they don't try to go "retro," I think that fad is over.

Twin turbo V6 isn't going to happen. V8=Corvette to so many people it would be idiotic to get rid of the powerful and efficient LSx V8 engines that GM is using now.
Sure AROD550I is an idiot if he thinks that each Corvette is a copy of the one before it but lets not jump to conclusions like the 'analysts' and author of that article did.
GM's 6.2 is more fuel efficient than pretty much any comparable powered engine in the world, also people who buy Corvettes at $50k aren't worrying to much about gas. Heck most Corvettes are weekend cars and are typically the 3rd vehicle in the family (2 daily drivers and 1 weekend car).
Even if you dislike the GM V8s because they are !!!OMG pushrod motors!!! you need to be respectful when the LSx series puts out the power that it does,w/ the economy that it does, for the cost that it does. Simply put the LSx series is top notch some of the best performance engines in the world.

depends on how you measure fuel economy. Thanks to skip shift and so on, the Corvette gets high EPA ratings. In Europe it doesn't get nearly the same fuel economy ratings.
Corvettes have had great performance and low weight, in the C5 and C6, I am sure the C7 will be even better.

@ 91z4me,
I agree with everything you say except the twin-turbo V6. The first 2 years of the C1 'Vette had an inline 6 (which sucked a** at the time, but that's ancient history). The suggested 3.6L DI V6 twin-turbo would be fine for a base model 'Vette and save the V8's for the Z06 and ZR1. Said TT-V6 engine has been heavily discussed for the Camaro so if they go forward with it, maybe they will just go with a single turbo.
As for the dual-clutch automated transmission, why are they even considering developing their own when they could just acquire one built by a third party?
@ bmwdrvr,
I think people would freak out more over a "Mini Me" Corvette than just adding a TT-V6 to the base model. But I think you are on the right path if you consider using said modified Sky/Solstice platform for a possible new Buick Rivera, a Pontiac coupe since they won't get the Firebird/TA back, and/or a baby Cadillac XLR (maybe call it the SLR...whoops, that name is taken. But you get the idea.).

Bored, I know well about the blue flame 6 found in the first few C1s but did they light the world on fire like the 265 Gen 1 V8 did? Did they provide anything more than a base upon which the Corvette foundation was poured over? No. People don't think 6 cylinder when they think Corvette. Nobody buys a C4 and decides to swap in a LC2 or L67, as venerable as those 6 cylinders are they hardly say Corvette.

instead of giving a vette a twin turbo I think they should make a line of Corvette cars....one entry level and smaller than the normal vette like the old concept sting ray with twin turbo 6, than the regular models, and than mid engine range topper

maybe using a larger sky platform for the base model twin turbo

This was discussed in the 90s a little within GM, it is fairly common knowledge in GM circles. There was even talk of giving the 'Corvette brand' an SUV. Luckily that line of thinking died quickly.
GM's LSx engines have shown greater economy to build and maintain (thanks to parts sharing w/ fullsize trucks/SUVs) while producing adequate economy and plenty of power that a TTV6 would be rather useless for such a purpose. In fact a TT DOHC V6 may actually weigh more than the base 6.2 LS3! Not to mention the compact nature of the OHV design and it makes the decision to use a TT V6 a hard one to make.

They should make it look like old corvette stingray because I loved that car and it would be so good to it with a modern interpretation

Maybe its just me... but if you're buying a Vette... maybe gas milage isn't your #1 priority.
