The future of the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is in doubt. According to a new report, if Corvette sales don’t improve with the new C7, the upcoming C6 will be the last of its kind.

“If we don’t get sales back up, there won’t be a next one,” Corvette chief engineer Tadge Jeuchter told Digital Trends.

Corvette sales peaked in 1979, when 53,000 units were produced. Sales have since steadily dropped to around 13,000 units in 2012. While Jeuchter is happy that the C6 outsold its main rival, the Porsche 911, last year, he acknowledged that the American icon is still in the midst of a sales slump. In fact, such has been the precarious state of the Corvette program that production of the range-topping ZR1 was denied twice before finally getting the green light. Will we see a new one?
