National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator David Strickland on Tuesday defended the Obama administration's 2025 fuel efficiency rules, as the agency said it will not meet a self-imposed deadline of today to unveil the final regulation.
The new fuel rules will require automakers to nearly double the average fuel economy of their cars and light-duty trucks to 54.5 mpg by 2025.
Strickland told reporters Tuesday the process was fair and even-handed, even though Japanese and European automakers bitterly criticized them as the rules were being developed.
