5-Series takes a beating in side crash tests?
The 2008 BMW 5 Series was the worst performer in new side-impact crash tests of luxury sedans by the insurance industry.

The Acura RL, Kia Amanti and Volvo S80 all earned the highest safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, according to results released Thursday. The Cadillac STS and Mercedes E-Class earned the second-highest rating.

Sport, go ahead to study IIHS rear end "crash" test and search all the German models to see how many of them get good ratings.

If I were worrried about getting killed in a side impact, I'd be driving an H1 Hummer. I'm more worried about BMW cars that come out of the factory without a proper protective side strip that prevents lo-lifes from dinging my doors in parking lots.

Anybody ever wonder how Fiat, Le Car, Skoda or Peugeot fair in an accident? Just a question. This thread bores me.

You just don't want to wreck a 5 series. There is a very good reason why the 5 series is only a couple of hundred pounds heavier than the much smaller 3 series and that is the extensive use of aluminum in its body. The front end is mostly aluminum and while aluminum is light, it folds like a sheet of paper in a serious collision. A front-end fender bender in a 5 series will be a 5000 dollar affair, guaranteed, now ask me how I know.......

Aluminum is stronger than steel if constructed properly. Audi A8 and R8, as well as Jaguar XJ and XK, are all safer than they would be made out of steel.

The Acura RL like most Honda products is mostly aluminum but you don't see the RL rating poorly. This is old news just like the MDX and the RDX was safest SUV's on the road. Honda takes pride in safety BMW has obviously refocused it's goals to something else which I'm yet to figure out because they havn't introduced nothing new to the industry in a while.

Body shops hate working with aluminum too. Alot of shops won't touch an Audi or Jag.

a minor rear collision in a 3 series almost superficial will typically cost over $5k as well. now ask me how i know...

Doesn't the 5-Series get good ratings in European tests? I'd like to know the difference between the Euro crash norms and the IHS. Or maybe it's because they don't have big and overweight SUV's in Europe! LOL

But if you're really driving it, wouldn't you assume that at some point in time you'd get in an accident. I mean, the ultimate driving machine should have the proper safety systems to support their high performance capabilities, right? These cars are meant to be driven hard and fast in Europe and yet allow their drivers to walk away virtually unscathed in most instances.

Here's the euro NCAP rating for the 5-series: http://www.euroncap.com/tests/bmw_5_series_2004/208.aspx

That's the 2004 model I don't think the 2007 has been tested yet.

I said this before, even thought the body of the car isnt safe, it has many systems to avoid accidents from the 1st place.

M53R...

i dont think anyone has a system for a driver running a red light and smashing into the side of your car...and glad to see this test actually shows the fault of a driver driving into traffic or another breaking the light. BMW needs to go back to the drawing board on this aspect.

and on the excuses -- sorry, but they failed...STOP with the excuses, it just makes your responses have no merit!

Im not giving an excuse, but they do have many systems to prevent crashes taking place. Im also with you, they need to go back to the drawing board.

To defend Bangle's pos car.
"depending on the location of seat, the location of dummy, the location of the sled, the results could change"

However, the 5 does win ugliest in industry.

Europe's tests probably simulate getting t-boned by a Smart/STUPID car, not an SUV.
